Big night for 7News last night. Winning nationally, all cities and all half hours bar one, if I’m correct.
Even The Chase at 5 beat Ten News.

Big night for 7News last night. Winning … all cities
Seven News Sydney did well, even with the flow-on from the Chase. I think Seven should consider Mark Ferguson presenting Friday evenings on a permanent basis.

[Seven] may have fixed up the lead-in program and the presentation… but… the 7pm program needs working on
I don’t think Seven will ever axe or even shift Home and Away, at least not in the next few years. What do you expect them to put on? Another news bulletin? Revitalised TT or a new current affairs show? Start their prime time line up?
What I personally think they should do is have:
6.00-6.30: Seven News ( out of their current hour, this timeslot seems to be their strongest nationally).
6.30-7.00: A current affairs show (jump-start ACA) whether it be TT or a new program.
Personally, I think that Seven News should stick with the hour long news on the East Coast with a long term goal to extend it to Adelaide, Perth and possibly Regional QLD (in a composite format, of course). Just because it was a longtime tradition to run news followed by public affairs during the 6pm hour doesn’t mean that’s the way it should always be done.
In any case, both Seven and Nine both aired competing current/public affairs programs at 6.30pm for the better part of 20 years so I don’t see why Seven couldn’t compete with Nine in this genre half an hour later…
Interesting thought here
From what I have seen ratings wise, in Sydney and Melbourne, there is a decrease in their performance in the second half while Nine’s second half increases on their 6pm performance. To me, this clearly says that somewhere between 6-6.30, viewers are making the switch away from Seven News to Nine News and that The Chase is the biggest reason why Seven win from 6-6.30.
Of course. I am the biggest supporter of Nine News extending to an hour but as for Seven copying… well… that is a different story.
All I have to say is wow, really? I guess that is the end of 7 News Adelaide promoting their presenters visiting various metropolitan Adelaide schools in their helicopter then! Depending on who went to a particular school vision would either be shown of the visit as during the weather or just before the hand over to Today Tonight. It also gets a plug on social media.

Etc you get the idea.
In Adelaide at least, the Nine and 7 choppers are (or, were last decade) stored in the same hanger and flown by the same company. Maybe they could agree to brand one side of the helicopter as 7 and other other as Nine (and just remember which way to position it before capturing their vision with helicopter in shot ;))
But if you look closely, you can see that it’s still called VH-TCN!
Admittedly, I’m surprised that Seven and Nine aren’t using the Australian Traffic Network or another external company for their helicopter needs…
7 Brisbane often had exclusive chopper footage and has been instrumental over ther years in assisting police in tracking and even on one occasion catching a criminal. I’m surprised to see them give up their chopper.
I think we all know why Seven and Nine felt the need to go into a chopper sharing agreement, the same reason that we’ve seen automated studio control coming into bulletins in recent times…$$$$$
Also probably really prevents either network from doing a Ten-style mass sacking of reporters and presenters…for the time being.
Yeah, and plus having a chopper for every station in the country is actually pretty expensive.
In the UK, the BBC has one chopper for the whole country of 60 million and shares another with ITV. Now in the USA, that’s a different story altogether…
Stations in US share choppers now too
They could’ve gotten rid of all the choppers and replaced them with some good drones. There really is no need to have manned news helicopters these days.
It even had a police radio in it for comms between the heli and VKG.
7 News on the Sunshine Coast uses a drone for their aerial footage
They can be used but not yet replace a news chopper. You would basically already need a crew on the scene for them to launch the drone. Not feasible.
What a shame to see the choppers go especially on the east coast where they are crucial to news gathering. I would guess that networks are always worried to use them now in fear of telling another network about a story.
Ah no. If anything they will be used more. Now that the costs have been halved
Seven News Perth hasn’t been using opener shots recently… Possibly building an actual set to compete with nine and thus using a key from elsewhere???
