I’d agree with most of what everyone is saying. Add to that the fact that Hot Seat continues to dominate at 5.30 even against The Chase. It’s going to be an uphill battle to change viewer habits but it can be done. They’re really not that far behind 9.
Doesn’t The Chase regularily beat Hot Seat by quite a margin?
Not in Queensland, certainly not in the south. Nine Gold Coast has Hot Seat at 5pm, Local News at 5.30pm and Nine News Queensland at 6 and the local news has been number one ever since it began in 1996
Seven are so far behind in Brisbane they were outrated by 7 News in Perth last year.
I don’t know, I just don’t like “BEST” being used. Other than that, I really like that promo.
It’s not a bad promo, but there’s something not quite right about it IMO.

“Queensland’s best news just got even better” according to this new promo.
I actually don’t mind that promo, better than Sydney’s and Melbourne as seen above. However, the phrase “Queensland’s best news just got even better” is not true. I feel the word ‘BEST’ is slightly self-boosting as it is based on opinion and not on facts. And, unless new sets, graphics, theme, content and anchors change, I can’t see how something is suppose to “get even better…” if you do nothing. As well as removing the best, maybe have a more local angle to the promo.
The last major one was very local. It had Sharyn and Bill talking separately and together from various locations-Cairns, Rockhampton? Gold Coast, Ipswich, North Lakes? I can’t remember the places but there was a half dozen or so. It was ok.
Last week was terrible but the two weeks before that, they were reasonably close.
It’s interesting that 7 used to be stronger in the second half hour when H&A was strong. Now it’s first half hour seems to be stronger. Possibly because The Chase does better than DOND was doing, and people are turning over to ACA at the end of the second half hour.
I don’t think the end graphic of Bill and Sharyn matches the rest of the promo. Maybe it will change if there is a relaunch in a week or do.
This was the first week back for the main anchors and the service recorded a record low rating. From the very day that the current duo took over it has been downhill, now on average more than 100,000 fewer viewers per night.
As far as the latest promo goes, the best part is that it has a clear message but other than that I would put it with some of the poorest news promos I have seen. After the initial claim that the news service just got better, it is just a series of baseless boasts with nothing to back any of it up. The images used are not local, are out of date and I am not a fan of the You Tube quality of the promo. It looks like very little effort went into its making.
I actually quite like it. The music is really professional, the graphics are quite modern for Australian standards, and the V/O (who is fairly different from other V/Os we’ve heard on commercial news promos) is fairly authoritative.
God I hope they use that version of the Mission for their new main theme, if they do ditch the current one.
The images used are not local
That aspect is probably an upside for me. The words which I associate with Seven News here in Queensland would be - hyperlocal, drab, poorly produced, journalism lacking in substance.
The fact that they’ve put a greater emphasis on international stories is, to me, slightly refreshing.
I have a feeling that the version of The Mission that Seven use for their promos is the orchestral arrangement that John Williams uses in his live orchestral repertoires. Recordings are available on iTunes Store.
Funnily enough, eight of the shots in the first 13 seconds of that Queensland promo weren’t filmed by Seven’s resources. That’s all ‘supplied’ vision, either by CCTV, amateurs, or RACQ careflight.
news should never be “BEST.”
“Tonight on Seven, the BEST pictures of a child dying on the side of the road.”
FFS.
Just wrong.
Back in the early 2000’s seven ran the line “The best news 24/7” and every time something big happened the line had to be dropped. When 9/11 or Bali bombings happen you can’t end your promo with “See the tragedy on seven news, the best news 24/7”. It just didn’t work.
At another point someone wanted to run the line “X news is good news” and I really fought against that for the exact same reason. The tag line of your promo should reinforce your brand when there are major events happening, giving a compelling reason for viewers to choose your service. That’s why the FIRST brand worked, it was a promise and Nine were delivering on that promise.
Unless you’re talking about the best coverage or the best service. I agree, just avoid it altogether.
That was my understanding. I haven’t examined figures in detail but late last year we were receiving emails almost daily from Seven publicity about the Chase outrating Hof Seat.
