Different circumstances I know, but it’s worth noting Ian Ross got the Seven News Sydney gig at age 63, retiring nearly exactly six years later (took the helm on December 8, 2003; retired on November 27, 2009).
He was what Seven needed to boost its Sydney news ratings, helped by a combination of Hendo retiring from the Nine newsdesk in 2002 and their audiences struggling to adapt to his successors Jim Waley (2003-04) and Mark Ferguson (2005-08).
Though Nine News won both years that Waley was in charge, ratings started heading south in the latter year.

Off-topic, though I remember when Seven aired the funeral for Sydney newsreader Ian Ross, it aired at 3:00pm in Sydney only. Don’t think the other markets covered it on 7plus.

From memory, I don’t think Nine even covered it, which I found surprising/disappointing given the near four decades he spent there, where he was best known for his time reading the news on the Today show.
