As long as it does enough damage to one of them to get axed, I will be happy. I hate the Renovation Genre and I have no idea why we have two programs that are basically the same show. Let’s get rid of one.
Well if you looked at the premise of the two shows you would see that they are actually very different to each other, if you would care to notice. Just because they’re the same genre of show does NOT mean they are exactly the same. House Rules is renovating the contestant’s own homes; their most prized possession essentially, while The Block is renovating some rundown set of houses/unit block etc that Nine have acquired.
But the two shows are also very similar in many ways. The basis is couples (with quirky nick names) renovating as part of a contest. Both are based around improving home living spaces, visits to the hardware store, dealing with contractors, interacting with other teams, picking paint colours, tiles, curtains, furniture and working to a difficult to meet deadlines. Throw in a host and some judges to score things and the similarities are remarkable.
I mentioned yesterday that the upfronts were held at The Glasshouse on Olympic Boulevard/Swan Street, opposite Melbourne Park. The Glasshouse is now the home of Collingwood Football Club.
@TV.Cynic pretty much said what I would have said (and explained it better than I would have).
Block uses abandoned wearhouse and buildings in an area ripe for gentrification while HR uses the contestant’s own house but other than, than is the same show.
What about the format of the show? In House Rules there is an elimination process and it gets drawn down to the final two teams for a grand final. In The Block, all teams are in it right until the auction day finale since they all work on their own apartments/houses room by room each week until each gets sold off to new owners and it’s the team with the highest profit that wins. In House Rules, it effectively comes down to the judges now since this year as to who wins so still very different in my eyes.
Only the renovating of houses part as far as I can see, which is what you need to make a renovation reality genre isn’t it? The premises are slightly different so you have two different shows on two rival networks. Same scenario with MKR and Masterchef, right?
Well if you are saying they tried to create another reality show of the same genre as Ten’s Masterchef & Nine’s The Block then you are right but other than that, it is not a rip off of any concept; Seven put their own spin into the format of the shows as you can probably see…
