Seven HD

“Honey quick put MKR on, its on 7FootyHD”.

I don’t think so. The current situion would be less confusing than your suggestion for most people IMO.

The obvious solution is to just do 7HD and make a big deal of the breakaway so that people understand what is happening.

Seven should make 7HD a full time 24/7 simulcast of the main channel and tell the AFL that they can stuff their HD in NSW and QLD because:

 1. They didn’t want it badly enough in the last 2 weeks for the Swans vs Crows AND Giants vs Bulldogs AFL games to be in HD in NSW.

 2. FOX produced games are only ever shown in upscaled HD anyhow, which in my opinion is barely any better than SD. There goes an old saying - you simply cannot polish a turd.

It’s probably a mistake, but the free-to-air EPG for 7HD Sydney is showing episodes of Star Wars Rebels on Sunday afternoon, while 7mate Sydney has Dynamo and Seinfeld repeats, and 7 Sydney has the movie Maid in Manhattan and Better Homes.

In this case, 7Mate is displaying an old schedule. It has been updated to what is on 7HD.

Could someone advise if commercial tv licensees have to simulcast their primary channel in HD by a certain date. I would have thought this would be part of the amended broadcasting act from last year (allowing them to simulcast in HD). I realise the stations have a self regulation in regard to the broadcasting act - just that Seven is trailing the field regardless of their AFL contract. Can ACMA force the issue for Seven to comply?

There are no requirements to broadcast anything in HD anymore - so a network could have all SD programming (much like ABC).

No.
The amendment was all about deregulation - basically removing the requirement for the main channel to be in MPEG-2 SD, and the limit of only 3 channels.

Aren’t 7 embarrassed that the ABC is potentially going to launch their HD channel before them?

Why would they care about that?

And Seven have already “launched” HD. It’s just split between 7 and 7mate.

Well they should be!

The commercial stations couldn’t care less about what ABC does. Unless it’s to poach programs / people when formats / personalities become popular enough that they can see they could be monetised!

So except for regionals, is everyone able to watch the Grand Final tomorrow in HD?

The regionals in Queensland and NSW will have coverage on 7Mate in HD.

Albeit the more blocky MPEG2 version ie. how it used to be in metros at the start of this year.

If we’re going to ignore the first incarnations of the HD channels, then Seven must be absolutely mortified and humiliated that even threadbare SBS launched their HD channel 10 years before them.

In 1999 Kerry Stokes was against mandated high definition only digital television and instead favoured multichannels, but stated that Seven would have high definition. On ABC 7:30, December 1999.
KERRY STOKES:
… Within five years, it is my prediction that we will get the highest quality high definition on standard television, on standard digital.

MAXINE McKEW: That’s what you’ll be putting out?

KERRY STOKES: We will put out high definition as well as standard. Obviously, as times change and they will change very rapidly in this area, Australia is now in a position where we can change with them.
