Of course who could forget that. Sadly, Brett Kirk’s time at Seven lasted just one year as he later went on to become an assistant coach at Fremantle (and later his old club the Sydney Swans).
Mick Malthouse’s time as a Seven expert also lasted one year as he later became coach of Carlton in 2013.
Though unlikely, I think Seven could lure Michael Christian back into commentary, if he’s up for it. This would mean that he would need to give up his role as the AFL’s Match Review Officer.
Chrisso was Ten’s best caller by a mile, had style too, added BT-esque excitement to calls and did not come from a media/journalism background like Ten’s others (BT and Chrisso ex-player play-by-play callers… Detect a pattern?)
Always enjoyed Christian’s commentary but wouldn’t say he was BT-esque - he was much, much better and had spent several years on ABC Radio honing his commentary craft. He’s certainly one of the better former players turned pbp commentator.
Yeah + Tim Lane & Andy Maher who are contracted with 7 for cricket etc. So I don’t think they would hire someone from anywhere else for a temporary role.
My guess is that Nigel Carmody might do some games when it doesn’t affect his VFL commitments. Al Nicholson only did around 10 games this season? So it’s not big work load to cover.
Speaking of Seven’s commentary team, I think Seven should make a play for Nick Riewoldt when he returns to Australia at some point next year (as he’s indicated his intentions are to return home next year). Obviously he’s not a play-by-play caller, but he’d be a great addition to the special comments team.
I believe that’s on the cards anyway, don’t think he’d be welcomed back to Fox Footy if rumours of his workplace conduct are proven correct. He’d be a great get for Seven though, and would work well with their experts.
