Seven AFL Coverage

Not a lot of overlap between the AFL and Bledisloe audience I reckon.

Just realise I got the wrong kickoff time for Bledisloe Cup. It is 5.05pm AEST (7.05pm in NZ). The rugby will take away some viewers in Sydney and Brisbane from the AFL GF if the latter is scheduled for a twilight timeslot.

How often does Seven televise the AFL on the main channel in Sydney?

Only when the Swans/Giants are playing and when it does not clash with the news, as is the case for tonight’s Swans-Bombers game, and a couple of early-afternoon games earlier this season.

While tomorrow afternoon’s GWS-Carlton game will finish before 6:00pm, it’ll still be on 7mate.

If I remember correctly, an Anzac Eve game between Richmond and Melbourne was shown on a Tuesday or Wednesday night in the main channel a couple of years ago, and didn’t rate too well.

Not often, it is part of the reason Seven will have some goodwill with the AFL as part of their promotion of the game to the non-traditional markets. It is something they will need to keep in mind when going through the bids later in the year.

They would never show a 3.20pm game on the main channel in Sydney as it disrupts their preferred news lead in. They seem happy to show games that start at 1pm-2pm on the main channel if the Swans are playing.

From memory didn’t 10 commit to showing AFL on the main channel on Saturday nights in both Brisbane and Sydney?

Only when the local team played. Locally played games were delayed by half-an-hour until at least the late 2000s. Otherwise they ran at about 10:30/11:00pm for 2.5 hours, with siren to siren coverage. These late night matches also had 2.5-3 minute commercial breaks every so often, with other goal breaks showing the coverage from the ground.

I don’t remember if it was 2007 with the new deal or with the advent of ONE HD when this changed.

Yeah I remember 10 trialing non-lions games in Brisbane at 9pm or something on a Saturday night for a while maybe 2005-ish. Don’t think it lasted too long but my memory is hazy.

In QLD at least, I’m pretty sure it was 2007 when Saturday night football became live/ near live regardless of the teams playing. Friday Night Football was also shown live through Main Event on Foxtel at no extra charge starting in 2007. I think NSW and QLD were the only places you could see this live every week for quite a few years.

Only during early day time or Saturday nights, usually only Swans, as mentioned due to them wanting a better lead-in to and because of Seven News.

And they don’t do Thursday nights or Friday nights because of Home and Away’s 3 episodes and Better Homes which rate probably twice as much, also because of NRL competition. On the rare occasion they will if there’s no NRL or no Sydney teams, usually a major match or final.

Yes, way back in 2002, for Swans and Lions games. Ten were the ones who started it. Originally I think it was home games?

There was the similar set-up for Adelaide and Perth’s teams too.

All this remains today more or less.

Wouldn’t it have been 2009 (with ONE HD)?

For Seven, it was definitely by 2012 with the new broadcast deal, with AFL moving permanently to 7mate in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth (so all games would be seen live but not compromise ratings or in Perth’s case the news clash and time zone).

Seven’s was infamously delayed, even in Victoria, on Fridays between 2007 and 2011, with Today Tonight, Home and Away and Better Homes and Gardens until 8:30pm.

I just had a look at this and if it’s correct it suggests QLD had live or near live Saturday night footy every round from 2007. That definitely fits with my recollection.

In NSW, if the Swans weren’t playing on Saturday night looks like 10 just had to start the match before 10:45pm. They probably started going live there with OneHD.

I did think all SA and WA team matches were live in their home states though which might mean the article isn’t 100% accurate.

Historic Dreamtime match headlines AFL’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round

Mega fortnight of footy on Seven and 7mate

Footy fans will be treated to an incredible two weekends of the AFL’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round live and free on Seven, headlined by the marquee Dreamtime blockbuster between traditional rivals Richmond and Essendon on Saturday night.

A mainstay on the AFL calendar, the 2022 Sir Doug Nicholls Round will celebrate the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to Australian Football and the country.

Kicking off with tomorrow night’s Carlton v Sydney Swans clash at Marvel Stadium, Seven will spend the Half Time Break with this year’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round Honouree, Jingili/Warramunga/Ngalakan/Arrente man and football legend, Bill Dempsey.

Returning to the MCG for the first time since 2019, fans can witness all the key moments from the historic Dreamtime match between Richmond and Essendon live and free on 7mate, this Saturday night from 6.30pm AEST.

Seven’s Dreamtime team will include three-time Brisbane Lions premiership player Chris Johnson alongside Hamish McLachlan, Luke Darcy, Wayne Carey and Abbey Holmes.

Seven’s Dreamtime at the G coverage will include a Welcome to Country conducted by Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung elder Uncle Colin Hunter. Then, fans can tune in for half-time performance by up-and-coming vocalist Kristal West, the granddaughter of Indigenous land rights activist, the late Dr Eddie
Mabo.

In Round 11, football’s #1 commentary team will be in Sydney to call the annual Marn Grook Game between the Sydney Swans and Richmond at the SCG, before heading to Darwin to bring footy fans all the action from the Gold Coast Suns v Hawthorn clash at TIO Stadium.

In a coup for footy fans, Darwin-born Shaun Burgoyne will return to the Top End to provide special comments as his old side takes to the field at TIO Stadium.

Before the on-field action kicks off, everyone’s favourite footy show The Front Bar will return tonight on Seven and 7plus, with an incredible line-up of the game’s best Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players joining Andy, Mick and Sam at the bar.

Gavin Wanganeen, Michael Long, Nicky Winmar, Derek Kickett and Darryl White will be in The Front Bar this week to share the personal significance of Sir Doug Nicholls Round, while reflecting on their monumental football careers.

7AFL commentator and three-time premiership player for the Brisbane Lions, Chris Johnson shared the personal significance of Sir Doug Nicholls Round.

“It’s been fantastic to be involved with Seven’s commentary team this season, and to add the Dreamtime match to an already great year, makes it even more special,” he said.

“As a player, I looked in from Brisbane and always felt a bit jealous of those two teams having the big spectacle, so it’s great that I can be involved in it now from an off-field perspective.

“We’ve come so far as an industry. Clubs have embraced the round and players are able to talk about their culture within the inner sanctums of their football clubs and engage with all staff at all levels. We’ve come a long way.”

Seven showing the Subiaco V Swan Districts game from Kalgoorlie in the WA Goldfields this Saturday. Good exposure for that region.

Are Adelaide not seeing the Dreamtime game?

No, Adelaide v St Kilda is their Sat night match.

Not sure how Seven is feeling now with this afternoon’s announcement that the next AFLW season will start in the last weekend of August and finish with the grand final in the last weekend of November. It will have to share the limelight and airtime with Seven’s coverage of AFL finals, then the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, the final three rounds of Supercars Championship including Bathurst 1000, not to mention the opening weeks of WBBL season (I expect it to start in mid November so as not to clash with men’s T20 World Cup).

Also it would cancel out a few grounds around Australia for the final.

For instance if Adelaide or Port Adelaide have rights to host the Grand final; it wouldn’t be Adelaide Oval, as the test cricket will be played there within 2 weeks.

Interesting; reaching for the popcorn!

Doesn’t really matter, AFL takes priority. Any clashes will simply be worked around.

Not sure which post you are replying to but either way the AFLW will not take priority. Cricket grounds would need to be in operation by November, and TV wise the spring racing carnival will 100% take priority for channel 7. I’d argue (without looking at figures so correct me if I’m wrong) the WBBL would outrate AFLW as well.
