Seven AFL Coverage

7’s commentary was from the ‘mainland’ with only Lilly Thomson at the ground

With the start of GWS V St. Kilda delayed by almost an hour, do we think 7mate Sydney’s delayed telecast will include the Fox time-filler content from before the bounce, or will they cut out most of the pre-game, effectively reducing the delay?

So 7 is broadcasting the VFL to Tasmania only?

Yes, and it’s only Tasmania home games, so it’ll only be about 10 or so games.
Not sure how it’ll work if Tassie make the finals, which is shared between ABC & Fox.

It’s been said over and over that Seven will carry “all 10” Tasmania home games.

If Tassie makes the finals, they’ll be on the outside looking in.

7 Tasmania put the VFL on 7Mate, which in Tassie isn’t in HD.

I forgot how bad 7Maaaaaaate’s picture quality is…..But great win in our first outing.

The full telecast. Currently running a long Ross Lyon interview.

And Seven are getting the AFL logo coverup of the Super Saturday Live bug, as seen on the AFL website highlights earlier today.

It’s a static coverup, and as such doesn’t fully cover up the Super Saturday Live animation coming in from break.

Why can’t the ABC broadcast the game in Tasmania?

They don’t hold the broadcast rights for Devils games. 7 bought them.

I’m assuming the current VFL rights are for 12 months?

Yes.

Seven may get the right back again next year.

I can see ABC keeping them but 7 trying to get ALL Tassie games not just home games. I feel this year is just 7 trying to see if there is appetite for it.

I can’t see 7 trying to get their last rights backs since they clearly had a reason for dumping them.

Did Seven still have the rights for SAFL & WAFL? Or have they just been renewed?

I’m wondering if Seven might dump them too?

They renewed SANFL on a long term deal last month. WAFL was signed until end of 2027 I think.

It was just the VFL they dumped because they decided to put it Saturday night. If it stayed Sunday arvo then 7 could have kept it.

I wonder why these leagues were more financially profitable than broadcasting the VFL?

Why not just return to the afternoons then?

SANFL & WAFL - if you look at GF ratings are almost always higher than VFL.

VFL was always just mediocre ratings but when they swapped to Saturday it just flopped and I think that made them re-consider it entirely.

Getting Tas is just 7 getting them used to Devils games on 7 in different timeslots etc from 2028 when they enter the AFL

Until the introduction of the Crows and Eagles, the SANFL and WAFL were the top tier leagues in their respective states. The current VFL is essentially a reserves league for AFL teams with a few standalone teams from the old VFA.
