Sounds like the announcement of Caroline Wilson joining Channel 7 will finally happen in two weeks time. On her podcast Don’t Shoot the Messenger, her co-host Corrie Perkin said that in two weeks time they will be discussing Caro’s new TV role.
That sure is a lot of fonts
Less than 1 month (28 days) until the first game of the season. I’m going to assume that we have about 2.5 weeks left before 7 starts drip feeding some info about their show & commentary lineups etc
Hopefully 7 doesn’t take inspiration from the terrible Fox NFL scorebug for their AFL.
Hopefully this tweet is not an indication (i doubt it is because Matt does 7news & not afl)
I reckon, here is something for Seven to think about if/when they relaunch their on-screen AFL graphics.
It is also worth noting that prior to the 2017-24 round of broadcasting rights, they didn’t immediately overhaul their graphics, but slowly did so from 2018 (including the icons of the teams, and then a major overhaul from 2021 which no longer listed the names of the teams, just the icons).
Something like this wouldn’t be too bad if a scorebug for the AFL. But it will mean both 7 & Fox would have to not show the full score breakdown.
This is unhinged complaining even by 3AW standards. Tom and his listeners obviously walk around Melbourne with their eyes closed unable to see the countless examples of legal graffiti art in and around the city and suburbs. When they start tagging 7 sport all over buildings then he can get upset.
Caro not being announced makes sense it was said that 9 had something in the contract & she couldn’t start until mid 2025 or something like that. So makes sense that 7 wouldn’t reveal her yet
It’s really Channel 9 being critical of channel 7 isn’t it? Take it with a grain of salt.
Kate McCarthy and Xander McGuire has joined the AFL’s round so far.
I assume Kate will still be part of 7 for the men’s season? She only did arm chair experts last year during the men’s season but did do commentary at games for women’s + the AFLW show too
Confirmation in the Herald Sun today that Seven will broadcast VFL games on 7mate every Saturday night, in an attempt to compete with Fox Footy’s Super Saturday.
But they obviously don’t have confidence the VFL will rate, consistently anyway, ahead of movies.
@TV.Cynic might know how VFL did last year vs movies in Melbourne. Hard to know properly, as Seven still had Saturday night AFL, but maybe pre-April and post-September or look at Nine’s movies?
With the footy TV wars hotter than ever, Channel 7 are poised to make a daring move to ensure you can still watch the footy on free-to-air TV on Saturdays.
The network has been involved in lengthy talks with league officials about shifting the VFL coverage from Sunday afternoon to 7pm on Saturdays on 7mate.
The league believes coverage in that prestigious slot will make for great exposure for a competition often left struggling in the shadows of the AFL.
It will also spark the latest chapter in the footy TV wars, with Fox Footy pulling out all the stops in its midday to midnight exclusive coverage of the AFL in Melbourne on Saturdays.
It’s understood the Saturday night VFL games will be played at a single venue, potentially Port Melbourne’s North Port Oval. The historic ground had its lights upgraded to broadcast quality three years ago. Few other VFL venues have lighting capable of hosting night games.
Plus
Seven will launch its suite of AFL shows and broadcasters on Wednesday, but is keen to fill the gap on Saturdays given the network has lost its AFL timeslot in the new broadcast deal.
Seven will have a football program of live game across every day of the week at 7pm, including the Thursday and Friday night games it shares with Fox Footy.
Example VFL ratings (Melbourne only - not including Victoria that would add some viewers):
Reach / Average
30 Jun 2024
VFL SEVEN 133,000 / 29,000
23 June 2024
179,000/ 26,000
2 Jun 2024
188,000 / 26,000
19 May 2024
179,000 / 29,000
Judging by the sounds of this, I’m guessing a lot of the new programs will air on 7Mate if they are going to have football programming every night
Okay they’re shockingly bad. Fair enough then. I mean AFAIK some movies in Melbourne still rate upwards of or occasionally over 100k.
So in 2 days we will learn who 7’s will have in commentary for Thursday, Friday & Sunday footy. I assume the caller will be the same for majority of the rounds while the experts will probably change
