Seven AFL Coverage (2016-24 seasons)

The same Herald Sun article says that after he’s finished his 15-minute show First Up with Kane Cornes for the AFL website, he will then go again and record Kane’s Call, a quick five-minute version which will be shown on Seven.

I’m going to take a guess, I wonder how close I will be.

Thurs - BT and Hamish
Fri - Brayshaw and Alister
Sun - BT and Alister

I reckon Bennett will do VFL on Saturday nights. Can’t see him being paired with BT on Sundays.

Bennett will definitely be involved in AFL, he’s probably in their top 2 callers.

I saw on Bigfooty that 7 will be similar to some NFL

The Herald Sun have revealed more information on Seven’s primetime footy line-up this year.

Thursday night
Brian Taylor and Hamish McLachlan calling
Kane Cornes and Luke Hodge providing special comments
Nick Riewoldt to offer analysis at half-time and post-match
Bec Maddern will host with Mitch Cleary on the boundary

Friday night
James Brayshaw and Alister Nicholson calling
Dale Thomas and Matthew Richardson providing special comments

Also worth noting:

  • Monday Agenda Setters: Craig Hutchison, Kane Cornes, Nick Riewoldt, Caroline Wilson
  • Tuesday Agenda Setters: Kane Cornes, Dale Thomas and TBC
  • Sunday Footy Fest (12pm-2.30pm): Jason Richardson, Campbell Brown and Kate McCarthy

I’m going to assume Bennett will do Sunday with maybe one of the others

Looks like Jason is adding to his 7 Sports list with AFL. I don’t think he’s ever been part of 7AFL

Surely he’s close to Seven Sport bingo now? He seems to pop up on everything!

must have friends in the right places!

He even hosted the Australian Open for Seven when they had broadcast rights, late night sessions in 2017 and 2018

IMO this should of been Sunday Afternoon as FOX has Matt Hill with Howie for their Thursday Night. BT & Hamish are probably the most unlike 2 commentators at 7 and they have paired them together for Thursday Night (which starts most rounds). I feel they should of had BT with Bennett or Nicholson (Bennett Friday if this was the case) instead

The fact that Bennett didn’t get either of the prime-time spots is a disgrace. I don’t care if 7 thinks he’s not a ‘big’ name, he’s the best commentator on their books imo.

Yep - Fox definitely have the superior teams, while Seven have managed to again put their weakest commentators in a key slot.

Bennett’s main passion is VFL and local/suburban footy. I’m sure he’ll call Saturday night VFL games and possibly could do Sunday AFL games.

Yeah but he is their best so he should have gotten Friday or Thursday. I think 7 should have had BT & Nicholson Thursday & Bennett & Brayshaw (the 2 JB’s) Friday - as I think BT didn’t want to work with Bennett before.

This is how they should have separated the old & much ‘hated’ Friday pair while also incorporating some of their better but less known names of Nicholson + Bennett with their not so good but better known names of BT & Brayshaw.

Also no mention of Abbey Holmes for either Thursday or Friday night but i assume she could be on maternity leave? or maybe shes doing Friday night hosting or boundary since that role is not mentioned

I would imagine she would be doing Friday nights, and/or possibly Sundays until she goes on maternity leave.

Abbey has said in interviews that she wants to continue doing Friday Night Footy for as long as possible throughout this season. I’m sure she’ll be doing the boundary on Fridays.

Bruce McAvaney returning to 7AFL to host Sunday night footy as well as several feature games throughout the year.

I like Bruce but sometimes doyens of the industry need to be better at letting go. Retirement can be tough but sometimes you’re better to stay retired.
