This happened in Queensland when the Suns and Lions were playing simultaneously not very long ago, with Seven in Brisbane televising the Gold Coast Suns vs West Coast Eagles in its entirety between 1-4pm, and 7mate televising the Richmond vs Brisbane Lions match at the MCG which began at 3:20pm (this was a Seven-produced game).
I also know on at least one other occasion when the Crows and Power have overlapped, with an Adelaide match starting just before full-time of the Port game (in this instance, Adelaide vs GWS began at 4:10pm local time, and Collingwood vs Port would’ve finished at roughly the same time in Melbourne).
I think I also remember a rule wherein Saturday afternoon matches couldn’t be televised live on FTA in Melbourne (hence the 90-minute delay when Seven had the rights to matches in this timeslot in 2012-16, and the 60-minute delay when Ten had them between 2002-11). Why was this, does anyone know?
In Sydney and Brisbane, Saturday afternoon matches produced by Seven were still able to be televised live, including those featuring their respective teams (Swans/Giants, Lions/Suns), unless they were playing in another Saturday afternoon or twilight match.
That’s happened a few times in SA, and 5AA and ABC (not sure about MMM) would finish the first game before crossing to the other match. I’d say they use 7 and 7mate on TV so both are shown in full (as long as it’s not a Fox Footy excusive (read: 3 hour delay). The rule wherein Saturday afternoon matches couldn’t be televised live on FTA in Melbourne (hence the 90-minute delay or a twilight start if in Perth or Adeliade) when Seven had the rights to matches in this timeslot in 2012-16, and the 60-minute delay when Ten had them between 2002-11). this was to protect surbian and local leagues in Victoria (hence games in SA and WA would start at 3.20pm, like on Sundays, if 7 chose a game from SA or WA.)
First time Melbourne have worn their alternative clash on a 7 broadcast. Also I think it wasn’t a typical red on the score graphic so they actually matched the jumper colour pretty well
That must’ve been a rare broadcast today… Fremantle, hosting at Optus, Sunday daytime, FTA, live into Melbourne. Somewhat good to see though, can’t just be Seven getting their way or focussing on Friday night and two big Melbourne clubs at the MCG all the time.
The primetime showdown earlier this year also rated fairly well in Melbourne IIRC.
Also, recently Seven Adelaide have been making their own promo’s for Saturday Night games from Fox that involve local teams. Has the normal AFL promo V/O, but uses generic music, doesn’t have stuff like “match of the year” in between match footage, etc, and the end board has a generic Saturday Night Football Logo, and “Tonight, 7.00” in a different font.
This is one of three Crows matches to be shown on delay on FTA in SA (first bounce at 3.40pm local time). Not only that, it has been scheduled so it starts right after the 6pm news, giving fans little time to switch over from main channel to 7mate.
With 7 very public about the new broadcast deal essentially kicking off with full 7plus streaming from the Brownlow Medal and the AFL Grand Final this year, is there any expectation that 7 will do what Super Bowl broadcasters do and roll out new or some updated graphics or will they wait until the beginning of the 2025 season when the changes fully happen
No Friday Night Countdown on 7mate this evening. It’s straight to the Bulldogs-Demons clash at 7pm AEST, except for WA and QLD which will get Eagles v Suns at 8.30pm AEST.
