On paper at least, the new SEN 1170 seems like it’s going to be a far better sports radio station for Sydney (including prominent coverage of rugby league - a must in this city) than Macquarie Sports Radio ever was.
Personally though, I’m not really fussed about sports on radio so from an historical point of view will be sad to see (or more to the point, hear) 2CH disappear from 1170AM. It may not have been the best ever station in this city, it probably hasn’t been close to my favourite for some years now, but it’s still about 88.5 years of history…
So Queensland is the new home of footy in 2020, the Lions and Suns are going well vs three Qld teams struggling yet SEN Track is RL bias its not funny…
Should’ve added “outside breakfast” to that - Queensland opts for Pat and Heals and New South Wales for Joel and Jimmy (soon to be Andrew Voss’ new show). Bar from NRL coverage in some markets, it’s just the one programming feed.
I assume they can’t broadcast NRL as 2GB and Triple M have the commercial rights tied up? Also AFL Nation is already carried on 2UE in Sydney, at least for Sydney and GWS games. Probably can only cover the AFL games not involving Sydney or GWS.
I didn’t realise NRL Nation is on 2UE. Is that the same games that 2GB has or alternate games?
I also forgot the 2SM also carries some AFL Nation. It’ll be interesting how that works out.
I see that SEN Vic on DAB+ is already presumably taking every broadcast that 1116 SEN does as you say (in simulcast with 2UE and 2SM in some cases) so maybe there is no issues with AFL broadcast rights for them there.
To keep 2CH alive, would it be a breach if the used 1539 AM for 2CH and leave SENtrack on DAB? I assume it would be a breach of the rules for narrowcasting. I was thinking in terms of Radio 2 got away with you a couple of years ago , the classic hits stations in Newcastle etc.
Outside of media discussion circles and regular Classic Hits 2CH listeners, I reckon it’s quite possible that a majority of Sydney is currently unaware that 1170AM is soon to become SEN.
In times gone by, the launch of a new station was a big thing. Marketing would be creating bumper stickers, giving them out at major shopping centres, competitions etc. Maybe they want to slide in under the radar and then do the promos later.
If anything, the people to petition for that one is RSN and Racing Vic, bring back the 3UZ brand, market it along the lines of “3UZ Muzic is back”.
But, trying to get Hutchy to convert SEN2/3 to Classic Hits, you’ve got more chance of getting a heavy snowfall in summer.
What remains to be seen is how long 2CH lasts in its new form, but my money is on 6-12 months, max.
