SEN (Radio)

On paper at least, the new SEN 1170 seems like it’s going to be a far better sports radio station for Sydney (including prominent coverage of rugby league - a must in this city) than Macquarie Sports Radio ever was.

Personally though, I’m not really fussed about sports on radio so from an historical point of view will be sad to see (or more to the point, hear) 2CH disappear from 1170AM. It may not have been the best ever station in this city, it probably hasn’t been close to my favourite for some years now, but it’s still about 88.5 years of history…

So Queensland is the new home of footy in 2020, the Lions and Suns are going well vs three Qld teams struggling yet SEN Track is RL bias its not funny…

SEN Track broadcasts the same programming feed into Queensland, New South Wales, Melbourne and Perth - more League markets than Aussie Rules ones.

how come we dont get Pat and Heals in the morning in Victoria then?

Should’ve added “outside breakfast” to that - Queensland opts for Pat and Heals and New South Wales for Joel and Jimmy (soon to be Andrew Voss’ new show). Bar from NRL coverage in some markets, it’s just the one programming feed.

that’s a bugger! I was really looking forward to listening to them in the morning :frowning:

Streaming through the website (link), app or the podcast is your best bet.

What sports rights does 1170 SEN have in Sydney?

I assume they can’t broadcast NRL as 2GB and Triple M have the commercial rights tied up? Also AFL Nation is already carried on 2UE in Sydney, at least for Sydney and GWS games. Probably can only cover the AFL games not involving Sydney or GWS.

My guess is they’ll take the NRL Nation call off 2UE and still leave their second call team as is for BOG regionals/2SM.

As for AFL and other sports, they’ll likely take the same call direct from 1116AM.

I didn’t realise NRL Nation is on 2UE. Is that the same games that 2GB has or alternate games?
I also forgot the 2SM also carries some AFL Nation. It’ll be interesting how that works out.

I see that SEN Vic on DAB+ is already presumably taking every broadcast that 1116 SEN does as you say (in simulcast with 2UE and 2SM in some cases) so maybe there is no issues with AFL broadcast rights for them there.

To keep 2CH alive, would it be a breach if the used 1539 AM for 2CH and leave SENtrack on DAB? I assume it would be a breach of the rules for narrowcasting. I was thinking in terms of Radio 2 got away with you a couple of years ago , the classic hits stations in Newcastle etc.

The press release issued to announce 1170 SEN states that the station will have live coverage of NRL (including State of Origin), Test matches, the Big Bash, A-League and AFL.

Specifically, the station will carry selected test matches, the BBL and coverage of the Australian Open during Summer.

The same games Triple M has (ie; Thursday night, Friday 6pm, Saturday 3pm & Sunday 4pm)

I guess money is scarce, but has there been any ads aired on Foxtel or Free to Air TV?

Having an outside broadcast at a footy game for a launch would be good, but given the Covid situation it would be difficult.

Don’t think so.

Outside of media discussion circles and regular Classic Hits 2CH listeners, I reckon it’s quite possible that a majority of Sydney is currently unaware that 1170AM is soon to become SEN.

In times gone by, the launch of a new station was a big thing. Marketing would be creating bumper stickers, giving them out at major shopping centres, competitions etc. Maybe they want to slide in under the radar and then do the promos later.

I would love to see 3AK back as a DAB+ and App station play Classic Hits of the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s plus Overflow of Sport from SEN.

They should replace the useless SEN 2 and 3 stations which is taking up bandwidth with Networked 2ch/3ak classic hits stations

I wish the ACMA would tell SEN/PSN/Crocmedia to shutdown those 2 dupicated stations

I’d love to hear classic hits in crystal clear… 16kbps.

If anything, the people to petition for that one is RSN and Racing Vic, bring back the 3UZ brand, market it along the lines of “3UZ Muzic is back”.

But, trying to get Hutchy to convert SEN2/3 to Classic Hits, you’ve got more chance of getting a heavy snowfall in summer.
What remains to be seen is how long 2CH lasts in its new form, but my money is on 6-12 months, max.
