SBS Worldwatch

SBS do show Al Jazeera reports on the 6.30pm World News bulletin. In the past SBS would have shown the AJ logo beside the in-house graphics if these reports were screened.

1 News at Midday’s appearance on SBS Viceland is going to be short-lived, with TVNZ confirming today that the bulletin will be axed as part of costcutting measures at the broadcaster (see 1 News NZ thread for more discussions).

Weird choice to drop 6 but not Midday considering that bulletin is being axed?

Maybe soon TVNZ will follow suit

I am thinking the same.

Could SBS restore 1 News at Six AFTER the midday bulletin ends?

UPDATE: TV Tonight’s David Knox posted this afternoon that SBS had advised 1 News at Six was out of schedule due to scheduling conflicts.

UPDATE 30/5: Condensed editions of 1 News at Six (30-35 minutes long) are available on SBS on Demand.

UPDATE 1/5: the midday bulletin will finish this Friday (May 3). SBS is yet to reveal what will be its replacement in the midday timeslot.

UPDATE 2 3/5: France 24 English News will replace 1 News Midday from Monday, May 6.

I notice that TVB 6.30pm News from Hong Kong has been quietly dropped from the Worldwatch schedule. It has been airing late nights since the channel began. However, the bulletins are still available on SBS on Demand website.

SBS has announced they will be “evolving” (axing) its Arabic and Mandarin news bulletins in favour of “short-form digital video news packages through the day”

It always seemed ambitious to be producing half hour daily broadcast news bulletins in other languages, so no surprise they’re not continuing with this venture in its current format.

I am surprised that they even pursued it for this long.

To be honest, I am too surprised it was still airing to this day.

Not enough viewers? And thus moving to digital as short clips thrown randomly throughout the day?

Some lazy and euro-centric programming from SBS. They should really be running some of CNA’s flagship bulletins - all in English and focused on Asia. TVRI has also set up an english news channel/service they could rip a bulletin from. Also plenty of English language TV news from Malaysia. The combo of big Indonesian and Malaysian communities here + it being focused on our region would be really compelling for SBSWW.

The time for a bulletin like those two probably would’ve been back in the late 1990s or early 2000s, before internet streaming became a thing.

The Arabic and Chinese bulletins finished on Friday.

Replacing them will be:
8-8:30PM: Arabic News French 24
8:30-9PM: French 24 French News

It was a short stay for 1News given it only premiered on SBS Viceland in March last year. I guess the omission was partly due to cutbacks at TVNZ.

Disappointing. Wonder if they could get Three News instead.

Worldwatch is still missing a Malaysian and Singaporean bulletin. I feel like CNA/mediacorp would only be too happy to let SBS show Singapore Tonight.
