Keanu Reeves: Pop Messiah

Saturday 18 February 9:00pm

Untitled

As an indie actor in My Own Private Idaho, a blockbuster star in Point Break and Speed, a digital-age hero in The Matrix and a supremely accomplished hitman in the John Wick saga, in the course of a career spanning more than 30 years, Keanu Reeves has reinvented himself over and over again, building a protean, category-defying body of work that makes him one of the most fascinating and most contemporary stars of his generation.

Through his unusual career, major successes but also wrong moves, this full archive documentary investigates a star who seems to have no equivalent. A dive into the journey of a unique actor, to explore the upheavals that have reshaped Hollywood over the last four decades, as digital technologies have revolutionized our lives, social networks have emerged and gone from strength to strength, and culture has become increasingly globalized.

This will be followed by the repeat of Keanu’s movie Constantine at 9pm.

Women and the Power Of Activism

Wednesday 8 March 9:30 PM

In an emotional and revealing journey, Women And The Power Of Activism shines a positive new light on a group of young female activists who are risking it all to change the future thinking of governments and major companies.

In true ‘David versus Goliath’ style, these inspirational scientists and conservationists challenge the thinking of out-dated practices that are contributing to climate change. Giving the work of these women a new dimension, one of Australia’s top actuaries investigates their actions to calculate the financial value of each of their projects… and the results are astonishing. From sacred ground above Byron Bay to Antarctica, Indonesia and to Pakistan, the women apply their energies to shark conservation, factory farming and antibiotic resistance, indigenous practices, the fight against pollution and the subsequent environmental and human health impact these issues are having. This documentary moves beyond a critique of the world’s inaction on climate change, it celebrates the example set by this group of gutsy future-proofers…and actually puts a dollar value on the work they are doing.

The season and episode numbering is so confusing. They screen them as Season 14 Episodes 1-11 on SBS.

In IMDB these episodes are from Season 21, 22 and 23 based on the year they were broadcast so on SBS they are out of order and screened as Season 14.

When you go to SBS On Demand they have certain episodes from seasons 1-13 available. Then they list the current season episodes under Season 21, 22 and 23 but with the season 14 episode numbers.

I only noticed because my PVR failed to record an episode and I tried to watch it on SBS On Demand and was perplexed about how they numbered it.

She needs to dream big and embark on a journey across two of America’s most beautiful states, Colorado and California, in her own campervan.

Appetite

Saturday 22 April 9:30 PM

Appetite follows Tessa, Zal and Bastian, three penniless delivery riders who are brought together after their housemate RAJ mysteriously vanishes on the same night as a fellow delivery rider has a fatal roadside accident.

After Raj’s disappearance, Tessa, the newest housemate and a struggling international student has a feeling that something isn’t adding up. She throws herself into finding Raj, distracting herself from the realities of her less than perfect life. By enlisting the help of Bastian and Zal, Tessa follows a trail of clues and deliveries, discovering that Raj’s disappearance was connected to the delivery food company, Appetite… but in more ways than she imagined.

After discovering a cupboard full of burner phones all linked to Raj’s Appetite account the team struggle to reconcile with the Raj they knew, but Tessa, needing to know the truth, hatches a plan using her recently acquired delivery rider skill set. However, in her attempt to track down Raj, Tessa allows her commitments to university and her family reach a breaking point…

Appetite explores the cost of convenience and how seemingly small individual choices have a trickle-down effect onto others.

Appetite S1 will premiere on SBS Viceland as a 60-minute compilation on Saturday, 22 April at 9.30pm. All six episodes will be available on SBS On Demand following broadcast.

The Tara Brown Story

Tuesday 2 May 9:35 PM

The true story of the murder of Tara Brown, a harrowing case of domestic violence that shocked Australia. This first-hand account also examines the psychological impact on women who become involved in relationships with members of Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs.

First read that thinking they were doing a documentary on the Beiruit incident…

Have to wonder what this’ll mean, if anything, for SBS Viceland

SBS should have been dumped the Viceland branding entirely when it was axed in the US back in 2019, Vice at large has been a brand in decline for many years now.

Latecomers wins 2022 SDIN Award

The Screen Diversity and Inclusion Network (SDIN) and the Screen Producers Australia (SPA) have announced Latecomers, produced by SPA members Lazy Susan Films and Mad Ones Films, as the winner of the annual SDIN Award, at the 21st Annual SPA Awards.

Latecomers was created by Angus Thompson and Emma Myers, who have drawn on their own experiences of living with cerebral palsy to tell this story of two strangers with cerebral palsy who, after watching their care workers hook up at a bar, become determined to explore their own relationships with sex and each other. The series stars Angus Thompson and Hannah Diviney, and Alistair Baldwin, who identifies as living with a disability, directed one of the episodes.

Announced as part of SCREEN FOREVER 37, the SDIN Award presentation also marks the end of the two-year term of leadership for SDIN Co-Chairs Michelle Cheng (SBS Content Industry Diversity Manager) and Kelrick Martin (ABC Head of Indigenous). In speaking about the Award, they said:

Latecomers is unlike any program Australia has ever seen – hilarious, relatable and game changing – it shows the power and authenticity coming from creators with lived experience, telling stories about their own community. As Sarah and Frank navigate their relationships with sex and each other as people with cerebral palsy, this groundbreaking series is shifting perceptions and attitudes towards people with disability in Australia.”

The annual SDIN Award recognises an Australian-based project, producer and/or production company and/or screen organisation that has made a significant contribution, through excellence or impact to diversity and inclusion either on or offscreen, within the Australian screen industry.
