SBS showcases success of ‘audience first’ approach at SBS 2024 Upfronts

  • SBS showcases digital leadership, highlighting the success of Alone Australia as the case study for platform agnostic TV programming in Australia.
  • Announces shift in audio programming strategy which sees its 60+ language shows move to an on demand/podcast led model.
  • Introduces greater personalisation options for SBS On Demand, including a new recommendation engine and End of Year wraps.
  • Announces new opt-out feature on SBS On Demand for advertising categories of wagering, alcoholic beverages & quick service restaurants (QSR), from Q1 of 2024.

SBS has used its 2024 Upfronts to highlight its success in digital transformation across both its television and audio businesses, while announcing a number of key initiatives aimed at continuing to improve the audience experience.

Executives from its television and audio businesses spoke at the event, held at Sydney Town Hall, highlighting how 2023 has been a transformational year for SBS with the hybrid national broadcaster executing a new “Audience First” platform agnostic audience strategy. SBS used the event to signpost major milestones such as Alone Australia being named the “breakout hit of the year” after it became SBS’s most successful ever original commission with an average of 1.44 million viewers per episode – half of those coming from SBS On Demand.

Alone Australia, Rogue Heroes and The Handmaid’s Tale are among the TV franchises that have performed strongly on both linear TV and SBS On Demand

SBS also confirmed the success of its rebrand from SBS Radio to SBS Audio with the broadcaster earlier this month going live with a new linear radio schedule which sees programs across 60+ languages move to a more platform agnostic model where much of its audio content is then published online at 5pm each day. In the past 12 months, SBS was also named Podcaster of the Year at the Australian Podcast Awards.

SBS Audio

SBS Audio broadcasts in more than 60 languages and this year added Bislama, Malay, Oromo, Telugu and Tetum to the schedule.

“SBS is the contemporary national broadcaster, one which authentically reflects Australia and which has digital, belonging and sustainability at its heart,” said James Taylor, SBS Managing Director.

“2023 has seen us take great leaps in our digital transformation across television and audio, be it with the success of Alone Australia or the transformation of SBS Radio to SBS Audio. Next year will be no different as we continue to adapt to the consumer expectation of personalisation and world-class advertising experience.”

Among SBS’s announcements were a range of enhancements to its streaming platform, SBS On Demand, that underscore the network’s investment in its digital properties and position the platform as Australia’s premium free streaming destination for both audiences and commercial partners.

Central to the offering, alongside the addition of new ad products and FAST channels, is an improved recommendation engine that inspires content exploration and the launch of SBS Rewind which will show users a summary of their viewing in the year prior and recommend new programming based on these preferences.

SBS also signalled it will take a leadership position regarding responsible advertising with confirmation the hybrid-funded national broadcaster will introduce a feature which allows SBS On Demand users to opt-out of receiving advertising in the categories of wagering, alcoholic beverages and quick service restaurants (QSR) from 2024.

SBS will launch the beta opt out functionality in Q1 2024, with users able to register their interest via the SBS Help Centre from today.

The move has been endorsed by Endeavour Drinks and Tabcorp.

“SBS already takes significant steps to ensure we are meeting the responsible advertising expectations audiences have of us,” said Taylor. “We have age restrictions on SBS On Demand and we remove certain ad categories from particular programming, especially shows that deal with difficult or sensitive topics, such as Addicted Australia.

“For certain categories, SBS will utilise the benefits that digital provides and put greater control into the audiences’ hands. Audiences have always had complete control over what they watch on SBS On Demand. Now they will benefit further by having greater control over the ads they see as well. The advertiser benefits by not paying to reach people who have no interest in their product. This is responsible advertising at its best.”

SBS leads way on Sustainability; achieves Net Zero on Direct Emissions

  • First Australian broadcaster to reach Net Zero on direct emissions (Scope 1 and 2).
  • Sets ambitious 2045 target for supplier emissions (Scope 3).
  • First Australian TV network to begin carbon measurement on shows including Insight, The Cook Up with Adam Liaw, and Going Places with Ernie Dingo.

Hybrid-funded national broadcaster SBS will use its 2024 Upfronts event in Sydney, held tomorrow at Sydney Town Hall, to showcase the steps it has taken to carve a clear leadership position within the Australian media on sustainability and an ambitious pathway towards Net Zero on all its emissions.

The broadcaster today announced it had achieved Net Zero on its direct emissions (covering Scope 1 and 2) and it is the first Australian TV network to confirm it is using Sustainable Screens Australia’s albert Toolkit to measure and reduce production emissions

“According to Nielsen’s Sustainability Rankings, in 2022 SBS ranked number one among media and telco brands when it came to social and environmental good,” said James Taylor, SBS Managing Director.

“This week we are going even further and using our Upfronts to talk to the market about how SBS is the first Australian broadcaster to have achieved Net Zero on its direct emissions for Scopes 1 and 2.”

In a major step towards decarbonising its direct operations, SBS switched to 100% renewable energy in FY23. This was achieved through the Federal Government’s Large Scale Renewable Energy Target scheme* with the purchase of Large-Scale Generation Certificates which stimulate the renewable energy market. SBS is also transitioning its fleet to hybrid and electric vehicles. These changes mean SBS has achieved Net Zero for its direct operations.**

SBS has also analysed its supply chain, working with content, technology, and marketing partners to map their decarbonisation plans. Scenario modelling has enabled SBS to project an ambitious target to reach Net Zero by 2045 across all three scopes including its supply chain. SBS will also now begin the process of applying for endorsement of this Net Zero target by the Science Based Targets Initiative, recognised as the global standard for Net Zero commitments backed by science.

“Now that we have tackled our direct emissions, our next focus is our supply chain,” said Taylor. “I am very pleased that we are setting an ambitious date of 2045 for Net Zero on all emissions, including Scope 3. This is a space where SBS can and should lead the industry.

“We’ll do this in collaboration with our production partners and I am pleased that SBS has already begun carbon measurement on key TV franchises such as Insight, The Cook Up with Adam Liaw, and Going Places with Ernie Dingo.”

A founding member of Sustainable Screens Australia, SBS has consistently led the sector on sustainability in Australia and was among the first broadcasters (along with the ABC) to begin measuring carbon emissions for its operations and supply chain in 2020-2021. SBS is now in the third year of measuring emissions from this baseline.

“As a responsible purpose-driven public broadcaster, sustainability is at the heart of our strategy,” said Abigail Thomas, SBS Head of Sustainability. “SBS is taking an ambitious but credible approach to decarbonising its operations and supply chain, helping to lead the Australian broadcasting industry to tackle this key global challenge.”

“Our media agency partners have been talking to us about sustainability for a number of years and indeed Nielsen’s consumer metrics show Australians believe and expect SBS to be a leader in this area,” said Adam Sadler, SBS Director of Media Sales.

“Today we are showing the industry and public that perception matches the reality and that SBS is leading the way for public and commercial broadcasters to set an ambitious Net Zero target.”

SBS On Demand unveils slew of personalisation and curation enhancements

  • SBS has previewed several significant enhancements to SBS On Demand including better content recommendations and more personalised editorial curation.
  • New advertising products that build on the market-leading audience ad experience will soon launch including Solus 2.0, SBS Measure.
  • FAST channels, beginning with SBS Chill and content from celebrity chef Luke Nguyen, will come to the platform.*
  • A new, personalised end-of-year audience viewing recap feature, SBS Rewind, will launch by the end of 2023.
  • The SBS On Demand audience will have the option to opt-out of the advertising categories of wagering, alcoholic beverages and quick service restaurants (QSR) from Q1 2024.
  • The platform will launch an audio description feature in 2024 for people who are blind or have low vision.

SBS today used its annual Upfronts event to unveil a range of enhancements to its streaming platform, SBS On Demand, that underscore the network’s investment in its digital properties and position the platform as Australia’s premium free streaming destination for both audiences and commercial partners.

Central to the offering, alongside the addition of new ad products and FAST channels, is an improved recommendation engine that inspires content exploration and serendipitous discovery packaged in world-class user experience, says Chris Tangye, Head of Product for SBS On Demand.

SBS is a major force in the BVOD space and ranks no.1 in the Apple app store

“At SBS, we put the audience experience squarely at the forefront of all that we do. We all know what it’s like to be fed a stream of highly-targeted and dryly similar content based on our consumption habits.

“A superior user experience comes from understanding how people’s consumption behaviour changes throughout the day. Maybe it’s a podcast for the morning commute, livestreaming music on the way home, and then settling in for the latest drama hit on your smart TV after dinner. We want to deliver it all in one app.”

With destinations showcasing content as varied as cycling, to Korean cinema to world cuisine or the latest Australian documentaries, the SBS On Demand experience helps audiences learn and get acquainted with a particular theme, genre, topic, nationality or other interest. This improves the user’s onward journey and drives people deeper into the SBS catalogue to discover content they didn’t even know they were interested in.

“We want to help eliminate the choice paralysis that people often encounter on other major streaming platforms,” said Tangye.

Example of SBS On Demand curated content shelf through a web browser

Paired with this strength in personalisation and curated, editorial recommendations is an innovative ad experience that meets the changing needs of the media industry while delighting audiences.

“For the first time, we are allowing users the opportunity to better control their own advertising experience by providing opt-out preferences. This ensures that brand dollars are served to the most receptive and engaged audiences,” says SBS Media’s National Manager, Operations and Commercial Product, Lee Callagher.

“While SBS On Demand already serves viewers fewer ads than competing services, which can boost campaign results, we’re also introducing Solus Impact, a product that eliminates all but one sponsored ad in a show, providing an uninterrupted viewing experience and unrivalled brand recall. This is a win-win for brands and viewers.”

Callagher also announced SBS Measure which, in partnership with Experian, verifies the path to purchase, delivering an even more compelling offering to brands.

“Now, with our partners at Experian and your data, we can measure the success of driving your target audience from SBS on Demand through to purchase. This proves the value of your investment with SBS. We’re excited for this one and believe it will make SBS a partner of choice for many brands.”

Several other audience-first features are coming soon. In 2024, SBS will introduce audio description for Australians who are blind or have low vision. The feature will be available on key platforms on which SBS On Demand is offered, with users able to select different audio tracks.

By the end of 2023, SBS On Demand will incorporate content-specific FAST channels, beginning with rolling programming from famed Vietnamese-Australian celebrity chef, Luke Nguyen, and SBS Chill, a previously audio-only music station that viewers will now be able to experience with visualisation through the video streaming platform.

Rounding out the suite of forthcoming updates to the platform is a new, personalised end-of-year viewing summary based on a user’s activity throughout the year. The feature, called SBS Rewind, provides viewers with a fun recap of interesting facts and figures relating to their consumption throughout the year.

SBS Rewind, coming soon to SBS On Demand will give consumers a picture of the year in review

Background: SBS is a clear leader in video streaming:

  • In 2023, full High Definition 1080p streaming was introduced for live events ahead of the 2023 cycling Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes.
  • SBS On Demand is the top-ranked app in the Apple App Store among all BVOD and SVOD platforms in Australia.
  • In the 12 months to 30 June 2023, SBS had a record year on SBS On Demand providing consumers with access to premiere releases, boxset collections, live events, channel simulcasts, and catch-up titles.
  • Unique to streaming platforms in Australia, users may log in and navigate in seven languages a catalogue that boasts content in 95 languages across more than 15,000 hours of premium, distinctive content.

NITV announces high-definition launch and evolution of beyond 3% initiative

Beyond 3% continues to support the growth of National Indigenous Television (NITV), with the next iteration of the initiative introducing a new tiered partnership framework for brands, designed to drive further investment in the First Nations media sector.

After the biggest year in NITV’s history, which included the launch of a 12-market broadcast signal and celebrating a decade of being available free-to-air, Australia’s dedicated Indigenous broadcaster will be launching as a high-definition channel on 5 December 2023.

SBS’s Director of Indigenous Content, and proud Birri and Guugu Yimidhirr woman, Tanya Denning-Orman, announced the upcoming HD launch at the SBS 2024 Upfront in Sydney earlier today, where highlights of NITV’s distinctive First Nations storytelling for the year ahead were also revealed.

“I’m excited that we will be presenting to Australia a beautiful, bold and unapologetically Blak content slate over the year ahead – including our fast-paced community-loving sport – in high definition,” said Denning-Orman. “It’s just the latest development for NITV as the channel continues to go from strength to strength, delivering more First Nations stories to more Australians, and continuously improving how we serve our growing audience, as well as our partners.

“It comes following what has been a major year. We marked a decade of being available to all Australians as a free-to-air channel and part of the SBS network; we introduced our 12-market broadcast signal; and we continued to elevate First Nations voices for a growing audience of Australians wanting to connect and understand more about 65,000 years of culture, history and knowledge in this country.”

Peter Noble, a proud Bandjin and Girramay man and NITV General Manager, added that NITV has an incredible line-up of content ahead.

“We continue to increase our investment in the Indigenous production sector and partnerships across the industry, and are proud to not only be delivering more of our sport, documentaries, drama, entertainment, and award-winning kids, news and current affairs programming to audiences in 2024, we’re also excited to have returning series with Our Law and Little J and Big Cuz. NITV is continuing to cement its place in the Australian media landscape and, following the success of First Inventors this year with Channel 10, we’re excited to partner with Netflix to bring AFL great Eddie Betts’ popular books to life through our new animated children’s series Eddie’s Lil’ Homies.”

New NITV animated series, Eddie’s Lil’ Homies coming in 2024

The move to HD comes as NITV and SBS Media’s Beyond 3% initiative continues to drive investment in the channel and increase awareness of the benefits of greater investment in First Nations media.

Speaking at the SBS 2024 Upfront, Anna Dancey, a proud Yuwaalaraay woman and NITV National Sales Manager, shared details of the evolution of Beyond 3% to support brands either getting started, continuing, or growing their investment in First Nations media with new partnership tiers: Kinship, Ally, Supporter and Leader.

The new partnership tiers being offered as NITV seeks to give brands new ways to work with the channel.

“2023 has been our biggest year ever,” said Dancey, “with the likes of Coles, Airbnb, Amazon and Palmolive all increasing their investment with NITV, with bespoke and unique creative work that champions First Nations perspectives and Blak excellence. This year we also saw NRMA go further and become the first Australian brand to commit 3% of its broadcast media spend to First Nations media over the next year.

“We look forward to seeing others follow their lead and our new partnership framework introduces tiers to give brands a clear pathway to go Beyond 3%. This initiative has demanded more of our industry and is helping shift the needle on advertising spend that makes a real difference. Combined with NITV’s growing and powerful content offering, Beyond 3% will continue to support the strength of the First Nations media sector and the vital role it plays in this country and help our commercial partners to see and understand the impact of their investment.”

According to the latest Census data, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples represent 3.8 per cent of the Australian population, but it’s estimated that less than 0.3 per cent of advertising in Australia invested in media is dedicated to reaching these audiences. Beyond 3% was launched in early 2021 seeking to engage media agencies and marketers to begin to address this gap by learning more about the role and value of First Nations media in Australia today, doing more to contribute to inclusion in the sector, and re-thinking media spend by committing to increasing investment in Indigenous media platforms to at least a 3 per cent target.

Background: NITV continues to grow as more Australians engage with First Nations content:

  • In December 2022, NITV marked 10 years of being available to all Australians as a free-to-air channel, and part of the SBS network (see SBS Annual Report, p44).
  • In May 2022, NITV began broadcasting to 12 markets, making the move to a split transmission across five metro and seven regional markets, to support the ability to deliver more targeted programming to audiences, have the capability to broadcast live events simultaneously across time zones, and provide new opportunities to advertisers (media release).
  • In March 2021, NITV and SBS Media launched Beyond 3%, an industry initiative designed to raise awareness of the benefits of greater investment by agencies and brands in Australia’s Indigenous media platforms, including NITV which has seen a significant shift in investment in the channel. In August 2023, NRMA Insurance was announced as the first brand to commit to investing 3% of its broadcast media spend in First Nations media (media release).
  • In 2022-23, NITV reached more than 1.8 million Australians every month on average on television. Across NITV and the wider SBS network, more than 24 million hours of First Nations content was consumed, while First Nations content consumed on SBS On Demand increased by 143% year-on-year (see SBS Annual Report, p43).
  • NITV continues to grow its investment in the Indigenous production sector, and in 2022-23 increased hours of first-run commissioned content on the channel by 17% (see SBS Annual Report, p43).
  • In 2018, NITV won its first TV Week Logie Award for children’s animated series, Little J & Big Cuz.
  • Among the original and award-winning content on NITV today is Australia’s longest running Indigenous current affairs television show, Living Black, which celebrated its 20 years anniversary in 2022, with award-winning journalist at the helm (see SBS Annual Report, p30).

This remarkable event, marking Gulpilil’s return to the earth, the completion of his life cycle, draws a direct line between the contemporary world of international fame and 60,000 years of Indigenous culture.

Journey Home is a Brindle Films production for NITV. Principal production funding from Screen Australia in association with Screen Territory and VicScreen. Local distribution by Madman Entertainment. Developed with assistance of Screen Australia, VicScreen and Screen Territory.

Among the announcements, made at the SBS 2024 Upfronts, was confirmation that SBS PopDesi would rebrand to transform the channel into a more holistic offering catering to the more than 1.5 million Australians who speak a South Asian language.

“This new destination channel will be home to all of our South Asian language programs, including Bangla, Hindi, Nepali, Punjabi, Sinhala and Urdu1, and will have a whole new digital presence and podcast aimed at speaking to new generations of audiences,” said David Hua, SBS Director of Audio and Language Content.

“In one place you will be able to get SBS language programs, news, current affairs, and also our wonderful entertainment and music offerings. We’re excited to consolidate our offerings for our South Asian audiences in this destination channel.”

SBS publishes in more than 60 languages – this year adding Bislama, Malay, Oromo, Telugu and Tetum

SBS also confirmed that audience favourite SBS Chill – an audio music station famous for its laid-back listening experience with chillout, downtempo, and ambient tunes from around the world – would become a video channel on SBS On Demand.

“This move reflects changing consumer habits and the centrality of the smart TV in today’s homes. Already one third of SBS Chill’s consumption comes from televisions and the move to SBS On Demand will only grow it further,” said Hua. “The SBS Chill experience on SBS On Demand includes beautiful, calming scenery that matches the mood of the music and the time of day, bringing some serenity to your living rooms. It will be Australia’s smoothest, calmest “FAST” channel.”

Design of what SBS Chill on SBS On Demand will look like

In early 2023 SBS Radio went live with a rebrand to SBS Audio that also saw it introduce one unified digital experience for the first time. Improvements included better showcasing of podcasts, individual station pages, and music search features.

Building on these digital changes, SBS confirmed that it had gone live with dynamic ad insertion on digital (livestreams) across all of the SBS Audio product suite.

“This move has major audience benefits with listeners now able to hear the ads most suited to them,” said Adam Sadler, SBS Director of Media Sales. “There is more than $159 billion spent each year by multilingual Australians and SBS Audio is a unique gateway to the more than 5.6 million Australians who speak a language other than English.

“Through measurable digital audio and award winning podcasts you get a clear sense of the audience and the powerful incremental reach that can be achieved by having SBS Audio as part of a marketer’s media schedule.”

2024 will see SBS’s award-winning podcasting reach new audiences with the announcement that the multicultural and First Nations broadcaster will launch a new Insight podcast, with a twist on the television format.

This has been a momentous year for SBS podcasts with the broadcaster being named the 2022 Australian Podcast Publisher of the Year at the Australian Podcast Awards and launching a range of new and distinctive podcasts.

SBS Audio announced the Insight podcast at the SBS 2024 Upfront in Sydney and also used the event to unveil an ambitious agenda for more different, captivating, and truth-telling podcasts to meet the growing demand for diverse audio content in Australia. The broadcaster also confirmed it will now offer pre, mid, and post-roll advertising and sponsorship on its unique slate of audio content.

SBS Director of Audio and Language Content, David Hua, said the network was incredibly proud of its distinctive audio offering: “Our podcast network is unlike anything else in the Australian landscape, and we believe there will be strong audiences for the Insight podcast along with the rest of our slate.”

“This year we also were proud to launch podcasts like the bilingual series The Ugly Ducklings of Italian Cuisine, Bad English with Ivan Aristeguieta, Should You Really Eat That? by food writer Lee Tran Lam, and Signal award-winning series The Idiom.

Two new SBS Original Dramas to dominate screens in 2024

SBS commissions new intoxicating romance Four Years

Cast revealed for the deliciously dysfunctional family crime drama
Swift Street led by Cliff Curtis (
Avatar: The Way of Water ) and Tanzyn Crawford ( Tiny Beautiful Things )

At today’s SBS Upfronts 2024, SBS and Screen Australia, in association with Screen NSW and ITV Studios are thrilled to announce the commission of a new eight-part Australian drama for 2024 – Four Years, alongside unveiling the cast of the dysfunctional family crime drama, Swift Street led by Cliff Curtis (Avatar: The Way of Water) and Tanzyn Crawford (Tiny Beautiful Things).

Continuing SBS’s streak of original and dynamic dramas, Four Years is a story of two people trying to find each other again after being separated for four years. In the spirit of Normal People, the series examines intimacy, desire, in amongst the power dynamics of a relationship.

Achingly powerful, Four Years follows the turbulent marriage of two young Indian lovers, Sridevi and Yash, through two timelines, two worlds, told through dual perspectives. Full of romance and the yearning to find someone you once loved again, in amongst the turmoils and challenges of life, this ground-breaking Australian series uses the Hindi and English languages interchangeably.

Production of the eight-part series will commence in Mumbai and Jaipur, India and Sydney NSW early next year. Four Years is created by Mithila Gupta (Five Bedrooms, Bump) and features a writing team all with South Asian heritage: Mithila, Nicole Reddy and S. Shakthidharan and will be directed by Mohini Herse (the SBS Digital Original Appetite) and Fadia Abboud (Year Of, Five Bedrooms). It will be produced by award-winning Easy Tiger Productions (Colin From Accounts, The Twelve) for SBS. Major production investment from Screen Australia and Screen NSW in association with SBS.

Also announced at today’s event, SBS unveiled the stellar cast of the fresh high-paced eight-part drama series, Swift Street, as part of SBS’s bold drama offering in 2024.

Internationally acclaimed actor Cliff Curtis (Avatar: The Way of Water) and rising star Tanzyn Crawford (Tiny Beautiful Things) lead the cast as dysfunctional father-daughter duo Robert and Elsie, who become partners in crime against the backdrop of bustling inner-city Melbourne.

Created and directed by incredible new talent Tig Terera (Tinashé, Chenge), the series is fast, fun, and cinematic. It’s a wildly entertaining and unapologetic story that’s full of heart.

Curtis has an extraordinary body of work in both features and television series that have reached cult status in Australia, New Zealand, and across the globe, including smash-hit films such as Avatar: The Way of Water, Traffic, Fear The Living Dead, The Insider, Fast and the Furious: Hobbs & Shaw, The Dark Horse, Training Day, Whale Rider and more. Crawford’s impressive credits include M. Night Shyamalan’s series Servant, followed by her break-out role as Kathryn Hahn’s daughter in Tiny Beautiful Things.

They are joined by a dynamic cast including Keiynan Lonsdale (Love, Simon, The Divergent Series: Insurgent), Eliza Matengu (Thor: Love and Thunder, Jack Irish), Bernie Van Tiel (Class of ‘07, and SBS drama anthology Erotic Stories) and introducing new talent Alfred Chuol in his first major television role.

Swift Street follows 21-year-old street smart and spiritually Afro-punk Elsie (Crawford) who teams up with her jaded old-school hustler father, Robert (Curtis) to get him out of debt and save him from a merciless crime boss (Matengu) who wants her money NOW. The pair embark on a series of hectic scrapes and near misses, as Elsie commits to help Robert hustle for the money. But with an unhinged gang of debt collectors on their trail, the duo must carry out a series of increasingly serious crimes against a ticking clock while fumbling through their dysfunctional relationship.

Supporting cast includes Blessing Mokgohloa, Ann Truong, Bolude Watson, Arthur Giamalidis, Arthur Angel, Elias Anton, Catherine Saun, Sepideh Kian, Jediah Vakacavu, Rahma Soliman, Ben Sofowora, Halli Okello, Amarachi Logo, Michael Logo, Alex Pinder and Miles Paras.

Producers are Magpie Pictures’ founder Lois Randall (Black Snow, Seriously Red, Grace Beside Me) who is also Executive Producer alongside Cliff Curtis, and Ivy Mak (Sydney Sleuthers).

Swift Street is a Magpie Pictures production for SBS with major production investment from Screen Australia in association with SBS. Financed in association with VicScreen and Screen NSW. Global film and television studio Fifth Season (formerly Endeavour Content) is handling international sales of this project.

SBS Head of Scripted, Julie Eckersley said: “Both Swift St and Four Years represent an exciting new wave of Australian television. They bring fresh and exciting voices and talent into the mainstream. They are entertaining and full of heart and visually bold and distinct. There has never been such an exciting time for Australian television, and we are thrilled at SBS to be at the forefront of it.”

Screen Australia’s Head of Content, Grainne Brunsdon said: “2024 is set to be an exciting year for Australian television. With the arrival of these new vibrant and refreshing drama series, Four Years and Swift Street, audiences will be captivated by these two compelling narratives that authentically mirror modern Australia. Through a unique exploration of love and an edgy crime-drama, we’re delighted to partner with SBS to bring this amazing talent to the screen – paving the way for greater inclusivity both behind and in front of the camera.”

Producers Ian Collie and Rob Gibson of Easy Tiger Productions said: “We are so excited to be working with SBS again (previous dramas include the award-winning dramas Sunshine and The Principal) and to be collaborating with the exciting talent that is creator/writer Mithila Gupta. Four Years will be something that we rarely see on Australian television – an unashamedly romantic drama – as we follow the fortunes, passions and heartbreak that is the rollercoaster ride for our Indian newlyweds Yash and Sridevi over a four year period.”

Producers Lois Randall and Ivy Mak of Magpie Pictures said: “Swift Street will change the face of Australian television. It was an honour to work with Cliff Curtis, Tanzyn Crawford and our extraordinary cast, creatives and crew to bring Tig Terera’s edgy urban heist-escapade to life!”

Four Years and Swift Street will both premiere on SBS and SBS On Demand in 2024
