Wonder what Zelic’s departure means for next year’s World Cup considering SBS has the rights to it but they won’t have either football talent (with the departures of both Nick Stoll and now Zelic) or an outlet for football content with the upcoming closure of The World Game website?

It honestly wouldn’t surprise me now if SBS decides to sub-licence the rights to either Amazon (if the reports about SBS & them do acquire the Socceroos/Matildas rights as TV Blackbox rumoured) or Optus in an arrangement similar to the one that was meant to happen for the 2018 WC whereby they get to simulcast either’s coverage of ‘key’ games (particularly Socceroos ones if they do qualify)

Lucy Zelic has told Mumbrella she was made redundant as a result of SBS management’s decision to discontinue The World Game brand. She says the redundancy was “one of the toughest things to go through in my professional career”.

So she was pushed - not jumped.

Still a shame that The World Game (and Cycling Central) are closing. And making people like Lucy getting the boot. These sites going to a generic “SBS Sports” isn’t a good look.

Anyone know when the 2026 World Cup rights are decided for Australian TV? Also when are the tournament dates and venues confirmed?

Given there isn’t any host for the 2021 RLWC, 2022 Women’s Basketball World Cup FTA, 2022 Commonwealth Games, 2023 Rugby World Cup, 2023 Rugby World Cup, 2022 FIFA Women’s World Cup FTA, 2024 Olympics I think it might be a while. A lot more bigger priorities

2023

No they haven’t yet. Don’t expect anything until after 2023 re rights, and the schedule until 2025.

The best-of-five Grand Final series starts in Perth this Friday, however the final three games are yet to be scheduled, depending on the Victorian Government’s stance on allowing crowds to attend sporting matches as Melbourne emerges from the latest COVID lockdown.

All matches will be shown live on SBS Viceland and ESPN, and streamed live on SBS on Demand.

UPDATE 20/6: the final three games of the NBL Grand Final series will be held in Melbourne.

The Tour de France began tonight.

SBS to broadcast new Tour de France Femmes in 2022

SBS will broadcast the women’s Tour de France - the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift - LIVE, FREE and EXCLUSIVE on free-to-air, beginning in 2022.

The historic deal was announced during the final week of the 2021 Tour de France, with the women’s edition to be held from July 24 until July 31 next year.

Australian fans will have the opportunity to witness all the action on SBS screens for the next four years, with the first stage taking place on the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

SBS Managing Director James Taylor was delighted to welcome the Tour de France Femmes into our existing cycling catalogue - one that includes the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, La Vuelta, Paris Roubaix, Criterium du Dauphine, UCI Road World Championships, and more.

“The Tour de France is one of the most prestigious events in the global sporting calendar, and we’re thrilled that the long-awaited women’s race is finally happening – a massive moment in the history of professional cycling – and that SBS will be the proud home of Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift in Australia,” Taylor said.

“This four-year deal is a testament to our enduring and trusted relationship with A.S.O. and demonstrates SBS’s commitment to being the home of cycling, and bringing Australians the best sport from around the world.”

Meanwhile, Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.) CEO Yann Le MoĂ«nner, said: “We are delighted to launch the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift next year with our long-time broadcast partner in Australia”.

“Whether they are watching on television or on their digital screens, the Australian audience will not miss any of the challenges that the world’s best women cyclists will soon be setting for themselves.”

Just a reminder, that from Monday 9 August, “The World Game” website and its various social media pages will the be no more, and that “SBS Sports” will be in its place instead.

Am assuming that the Cycling Central website (and social media pages) will shut on that date too.

Speaking of Cycling Central, it released broadcast details of La Vuelta earlier this week. All stages will be shown live to eastern states on SBS Viceland, and streamed live nationally on SBS on Demand, starting August 14.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is less than 18 months away and SBS Sport is your destination to keep track of all the latest news coming out of Qatar.

While The World Game website is now closed, fans can find their new home for key football content right here.

Qatar will welcome 31 other national teams for a month-long tournament that will unite fans near and far, all in the hope of lifting the Jules Rimet Trophy.

With the qualification process across confederations still ongoing due to the coronavirus pandemic, it remains to be seen who will join Qatar come November next year.

Eight stadiums have been built in anticipation for the event which will be played in the winter season to combat the extreme humidity and heat levels prevalent during the summer months.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino believes the Gulf state’s turn at hosting the tournament will be one to remember, with authorities planning a COVID-free experience for international spectators entering the country.

“We will see the best World Cup ever in November, December 2022 in Qatar,” Infantino said after a FIFA Council meeting in March.

“The best World Cup ever means a World Cup with full stadiums. I am 100 per cent sure about that.”

Australia are aiming to attend their fifth consecutive World Cup, while France are the defending champions after defeating Croatia in the final three years ago in Russia.

It’s great they haven’t sold any games this time to Optus or anything like that so we can just enjoy it free on sbs exclusively.
