Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 10th Earl of Shaftesbury, was one of Britain’s wealthiest men, the scion of an historic family whose assets included grand properties in the UK and France, a 9000-acre estate and works of art worth tens of millions of pounds. He split his time between the ancestral family home in Dorset and the French Riviera where he enjoyed a hedonistic lifestyle of drink, drugs and sex, all funded by his multi-million-pound inheritance.

In France the Earl met Jamila M’Barek. When she claimed to be pregnant by him in 2002, the Earl married her, making her the third Countess of Shaftesbury. Their relationship grew strained, and they separated. Shortly after, the Earl disappeared and the press began speculating that he’d been abducted by the Mafia to force him to hand over his wealth. From there the mystery unspooled, taking it to the darkest pits of love and passion.

Amongst the dramatic and sometimes humorous stories are Olga, her two kids and her husband, forced to live in one room with her ex-husband; Klaus, a young German doctor who travels to Ukraine to rescue a friend, only to find out she has no intention of leaving, and Verka Serduchka, a famous singer and drag act who stays put, without his usual entourage, and creates daily online posts that become a symbol of Kyiv’s resistance and faith in future triumph.

In November 2006, Litvinenko, a former KGB officer, lies dying in a London hospital - poisoned by a mysterious radioactive substance. As police are summoned to take his statement, Litvinenko points his finger directly at the Russian President, Vladimir Putin. Litvinenko’s death a few days later sparks an investigation into a chemical attack on the streets of London and a ten-year investigation between Britain and Russia to find justice for his murder.

Made with the support of Litvinenko’s widow and son, the series is written by acclaimed screenwriter George Kay (Lupin ) and stars David Tennant (Broadchurch) as Litvinenko and Mark Bonnar (Guilt) as DS Clive Timmons.

Litvinenko premieres Wednesday 27 March at 9:30PM on SBS with episodes airing weekly, episodes will be available same day on SBS On Demand.
