Mysteries From The Grave: Titanic

Sunday 7 August 7:30 PM

It is one of the world’s most epic disasters: the 1912 sinking of the RMS Titanic.

Although the voyage only lasted five days, our collective obsession with the ill-fated ocean liner shows no signs of letting up.

Now, 110 years after the tragic journey, we go below deck to understand how an unsinkable ship was lost along with 1,500 souls.

Featuring interviews with the descendants of passengers, this film seeks to decode the ship’s remaining secrets still lying on the Atlantic Ocean floor.

Ross Kemp: Shipwreck Treasure Hunter

image

Friday 12 August 8:30 PM

Ross Kemp: Shipwreck Treasure Hunter sees the BAFTA award-winning documentary-maker dive on a series of incredible shipwrecks around the British coastline to reveal some of the nation’s murkiest and best-kept secrets.

From the remains of a slave ship discovered off Plymouth, to the Kaiser’s sunken Imperial Fleet in Scapa Flow and an experimental submarine aircraft carrier, which sank with all passengers and crew on deck during its sea trials, Ross uncovers Britain’s hidden maritime past.

Along with his fascination for seafaring history, Ross has a personal reason for undertaking this adventure as members of his family served at sea, with some being shipwrecked and not surviving to tell their tales. His great grandfather ‘Pop’ was in the Merchant Marines during World War II and survived being shipwrecked three times. Pop’s two nephews both served and perished aboard HMS Hood when it went into battle against the Bismarck in May 1941.

Ross is joined in his adventures by expert diver Emily Turton, maritime archaeologist and professional diver Mallory Haas and dive supervisor Neil Brock as they delve down into Britain’s past.

Some recently produced new acquisitions for SBS next week, some only airing this year on pay channels. Just need to add some Secret soccer playing Nazis, preferably near the Tower of London, for a good week for the broadcaster.

When veteran detective Danny Frater (James Nesbitt) turns up at a hospital mortuary for a routine ID check, he’s devastated to discover the corpse of his estranged daughter Christina (Imogen King).

anny refuses to accept the coroner’s report that points to suicide, and sets out on a dangerous, agonising mission to uncover the events that led to her death. Taking its cue from Christoffer Boe and Miso Film’s acclaimed series Face To Face, each episode sees Danny conduct a separate cross examination with a different suspect or witness, keeping viewers in suspense as they engage with the investigation in real time.

As Danny pieces together Christina’s relentless descent into criminality, he’s also forced to come to terms with his own failings as a father and the part he himself may have played in her downfall. Exquisite cinematography captures all the iconic and conflicting facets of contemporary London, where beauty, wealth and excess collide with ugliness, violence and corruption: a challenging backdrop that mirrors the moral maze at the heart of Danny’s journey to uncover the truth.

While the men are off fighting in WWII, the people who have been excluded from power suddenly find themselves running the show. Two Women’s Land Army recruits from Sydney arrive in the country and undergo a heady course in race relations, rural politics, spirituality, sex, and personal growth - oh, and farming. It is produced by Lisa Shaunessy of Arcadia, whose feature Sissy premiered at SXSW Film Festival this year. This series is financed with support from Screen NSW with Red Arrow Studios International managing international sales. This is the first 8 x 30 drama from SBS Scripted Originals.
