While the Men are Away

A queer, revisionist historical dramedy for SBS set in 1940’s rural Australia. While the men are off fighting in WWII, the people who have been excluded from power suddenly find themselves running the show. Two Women’s Land Army recruits from Sydney arrive in the country and undergo a heady course in race relations, rural politics, spirituality, sex, and personal growth - oh, and farming. While the Men are Away is created by Alexandra Burke (Sissy), Kim Wilson (Wentworth) and Monica Zanetti (Ellie and Abbie (& Ellie’s Dead Aunt)), and written by Wilson, Zanetti, Jada Alberts (Cleverman), Magda Wozniak (Bad Behaviour), Enoch Mailangi (All My Friends Are Racist) and Sam Icklow (The Moth ). It is produced by Lisa Shaunessy of Arcadia, whose feature Sissy premiered at SXSW Film Festival this year. This series is financed with support from Screen NSW with Red Arrow Studios International managing international sales. This is the first 8 x 30 drama from SBS Scripted Originals.

The show is distributed by All3Media International, which has already secured pre-sales to PBS in US, SBS in Australia and CBC in Canada.

Bin Laden: The Road to 9/11

Sunday 11 September 7:30 PM Triple episodes

Episode 1: This episode follows Osama Bin Laden’s early life as as a schoolboy in Saudi Arabia - raised in a wealthy family, he watches Westerns, enjoys football and avoids playground fights.

His childhood friend, Khaled Batarfi, says of him - ‘He was good, I don’t know what happened to him’.

In 1980, after the invasion of Afghanistan he joins many other Arab men who want to free the country from the Soviets.

Episode 2: This episode begins with Bin Laden returning home to Saudi Arabia from Afghanistan, an acclaimed war hero after the withdrawal of the Soviet - a military victory that he believes he helped achieve.

However, 18 months after he returns, Saddam Hussein invades Kuwait prompting the anxious Saudi authorities to seek protection from the US.

Horrified by what he regards as an invasion of Muslim holy lands by the American army, Bin Laden turns publicly against the Saudi royal family, and refusing to be silenced he escapes to Sudan.

He reinvents himself as a large-scale agricultural producer, famous for growing giant sunflowers and watermelons.

Episode 3: This episode begins in 1997 with Bin Laden’s Al-Qaeda ramping up its operations in Afghanistan.

With America his target, he grants rare interviews to US networks from his mountain base to take his threats straight into US homes.

He follows this, in 1998, with his infamous fatwa calling for ‘the murder of any American, anywhere on Earth’.

Secrets Of The Lost Liners

From Friday 30 September 8:30 PM 6 episodes

Secrets Of The Lost Liners is an in-depth history series that charts the design, service and loss of some of the world’s greatest ocean liners. From art deco icons to symbols of fascist dictatorships, from hard-worked immigrant ships to luxury floating palaces, these extravagant ships were some of the most amazing moving objects ever made. They attracted the rich and famous to their first-class accommodation, and masses of immigrants to the lower decks. They pushed the boundaries of engineering and design in a constant game of one-upmanship between different companies and different nations. But one by one, they would all be lost in tragic and sometimes mysterious circumstances.

Featuring never-before seen footage, experts, and historians along with a minute-by-minute analysis of
each catastrophe, this series will tell the stories of these incredible ships, of the brilliant designers who
built them and the people who sailed on board.

Latest Secrets Of The Hieroglyphs

Sunday 2 October 7:30 PM

200 years ago, a young French scholar Jean-François Champollion accomplished the impossible - he cracked the code of hieroglyphs, which had remained mute for over a millennium.

Thanks to his decipherment, an entire civilisation buried under the sands of Egypt could come to life again.

In the South, near Luxor, Egyptologists are intrigued by a richly adorned tomb, the most monumental in Egypt, larger than those of the pharaohs - the tomb of a priest named Padiamenope.

Granted exclusive access to the core of the archaeological mission led by the IFAO (French Institute of Oriental Archaeology in Cairo), we are introduced to their latest discoveries.

Thanks to an exceptional setup of 3D virtual tours plunging into the dark, stifling hot depths of this Palace of Hieroglyphs, we’ll be able to uncover the secrets of the priests, scribes, painters, engravers, and builders who created that grand funerary monument.
