ABC scored a comprehensive win with its overnight New Year’s Eve 2022 coverage. The network share of 32.8% is ABC’s second best for the year, behind the Federal Election night, and is up from 31.0% for the 2021 NYE coverage.

The celebrations marked the 10th consecutive year of ABC’s coverage and delivered its highest ever network share for a New Year’s Eve night.

However, the headline number of 985,000 is down from 2021’s 1,149,000 and is the first time that the main channel midnight fireworks have rated below one million metro viewers. The Countdown to the fireworks averaged 721,000, down from 959,000 last year while the 9PM show’s 599,000 compares to 644,000. While other codings for the night are down year on year the “Post Fireworks” makes its debut this year.

Also watching (in SD) on ABC 24 were another 256,000 at midnight compared to 275,000 last year.

ABC’s highest ever midnight fireworks audience was in 2020 when 1.587 million tuned in. The last fireworks on Nine in 2012 had 1.238 million.

Nine managed to rank second in network shares with Mama Mia! just making the top 20 while the Melbourne Fireworks missed out.

Seven’s main channel was second though helped by a premiere movie though the network was down 2 from last year while Nine was down one. 10 and SBS shares were both up slightly year-on-year.

Seven News won in all markets except Brisbane with both 6pm bulletins well down on usual numbers.

Last year (on a Friday) a program needed 280k to make the top 20 – this year just 159k.

The BBL on Fox managed 180k nationally.

Worth noting that this year’s ratings year will include both the 2021 and 2022 NYE nights.

I’d say the big drop for ABC’s coverage of Sydney midnight fireworks was due to more people out and about, with no COVID lockdowns. It will be interesting to see the live streaming numbers later this week.

The NYE ratings are down from last year due to people streaming the coverage on other Social media platforms and on iView.

The ABC’s annual success on NYE shows there is a market for entertainment on this night each year, particularly if family friendly, and involving music.

Good numbers overall for the fireworks on the ABC and on ABC News. Odd that they included a “late” segment for the last few minutes between the actual fireworks and Rage. Is Rage Guest Programmer (19th place) at 12.20am until 2am?

Happy New Year

I think a key reason the ratings are lower is that NYE was a Saturday night compared to weekdays for the past many years. Ratings are always lower on a Saturday.

I think the ABC coverage is down because a lot of people say a little bit of Charlie Pickering goes a long way

Happy New Year everyone!

Didn’t seem to affect their ratings when he was on in previous years.

There is a lot of media coverage this morning calling it a “woke snooze fest” and for excluding the majority of viewers.

WOW !!!
Media outlets not praising the hard work of an opposition’s programming,
Amazed that could ever happen

That quote you referenced is based on a single tweet posted by someone on Twitter. While they’re entitled to their views, outlets basing articles solely on tweets is lazy journalism because Twitter (as proven many, many, many times) isn’t reflective of what most people think.

ts basically a copy/paste from previous years thats lightly updated with new “outrage” from Twitter

Talk back radio is full of callers complaining about it this morning

My point is that if you want the fireworks to rate higher, the coverage should not be so polarising because surely we can have one night where we drop politics and just come together as one?

Because all of these people were forced at gunpoint to watch the ABC?

The timing for the fireworks are well known - you don’t have to watch the whole event as well

Considering the typical audience of talkback radio callers, that doesn’t surprise me.

As to your second point, there are a number of things that can be said about it - a few of them:

  1. I watched a fair bit of the ABC’s coverage last night and it wasn’t that polarising. The only bit that some might think met that mark was the segment highlighting/previewing Sydney WorldPride and that’s really more of a personal view issue.

  2. With life (hopefully) back to a relative ‘normal’, NYE coverage probably won’t rate through the roof like it did over the last few years (for obvious reasons) moving forward - even if the ABC delivered a plain vanilla, completely inoffensive and non-controversial broadcast.

  3. For better or worse, we now live in a world where nearly anything and everything can be considered by someone to be ‘polarising’. It’s not realistic to suggest that NYE’s coverage (whether it’s broadcast by the ABC or another network) is immune to that.

I think this is the important point. I don’t think it would have mattered who performed last night or who broadcasted it, there would have been people complaining about it. Heck, the fireworks themselves are a debating point for some.

If all the people supposedly complaining had actually watched the ABC, the ratings would be even higher.

Luckily Courtney chose not to read a book last night.

Can’t remember the last time (probably never) Carols and Sydney NY Fireworks were both below 1m metro. The changing environment continues, hopefully not for the worse, c’mon bvod!

Decent result for the United Cup tennis consideing NYE and no Aussies, 4th best m/c (behind 7Two, 9Go! and ABC Comedy). I’d guess it was for Nadal’s big match which was an upset loss to England’s Cameron Norrie, starting on the main channel late afternoon, them 9Gem including to about 6:20pm aedt, also helping to keep some watching into the evening.

Also thank you Cynic for publishing on yet another public holiday let alone NY

has commentary of ABC’s coverage ever been anything other than negative?
