Dave Thornton or Sam Taunton?
The guest don’t even get to walk into music. It’s little things like that which add atmosphere and vibrancy,
Lots of potential but needs some tweaking.
Tonight’s second guest is Dr Emma West, Director of Emergency Medical Training and a senior doctor at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
Edit: you may have seen Dr Emma from Nine’s observational series Emergency, which is filmed at the hospital.
Oh, silly me. Dave Thornton. Thanks for the heads up.
I rated the ADbc reference there.
I’ve enjoyed this, nice to see Pang in control for once on a program, Thornton adds some great potential. The jokes are topical and stick the landing, the clips from News outlets are humorous (The F1 to Homicide transition especially)
The show needs minor tweaks, but has started well. Enjoying the guest variety!
I liked the segment with Dr Emma West. Asking her health questions from related scenes from TV and film.
Great to see Pang front his own show. It definitely has the potential, as mentioned by others there could be a couple of minor tweaks needed but on the whole off to a good start.
Seems to need more energy. Even HYBPA seems to have more energy with the theme music and crowd
I felt the opening ‘monologue’ was very flat, and the desk piece that followed wasn’t much better. If Paramount was hoping for a Late Show-style format, they haven’t achieved it here.
The show really needs to draw upon Sam’s strengths. It desperately needs announcers or sidekicks that align more with his comedic style to better emulate a genuine Tonight Show vibe. Additionally, incorporating some form of a band element wouldn’t hurt the format either.
Yeah monologue wasn’t good. Dave feels unnecessary.
Overall the first episode was good. The Jack Thompson interview was great, Dr Emma’s segment and Yesterday’s News Today segment were hilarious.
Definitely room for improvement. I feel Sam could have a stronger opening monologue.
I enjoyed the show overall. I agree that some tweaks may be necessary. I think Sam was a bit nervous tonight with some pauses and awkwardness but that should improve as the weeks go on.
Most of the comedy worked. Of course you’re going to have some jokes fall flat but Sam will get to know the audience and work out what works and what doesn’t work.
I didn’t mind Dave Thornton being there as a second banana. I think he helped Sam out a few times with his quick one-liners. He could probably have his own segment with some of his own comedy.
Great to have comedy back on Monday nights.
I thought it was a great first effort and will no doubt improve with time. Good job Sam.
Kitty will probably be the guest announcer next week. And the kid from Boy Swallows Universe is the guest.
Lots of the feedback here tonight is pretty spot on.
I thought that it was decent for a first show - obviously there are some improvements that can be made, but for the first show, I think they’ve done alright. No doubt it will continue to grow as they refine it, etc.
It’s definitely better once he gets the guests in and has someone to bounce off. I thought ABC’s Frankly was a better tonight show compared to this show’s first episode. It even looks cheap, especially with that skyline print.
Kitty will probably be the guest announcer next week.
Actually that would help greatly
Thoroughly enjoyed the first show. Few tweaks are needed and I would replace the guest announcer with a small house band. And Jack Thompson was an odd choice for episode 1. Hope he can get some bigger names
Just watched the whole thing now - avoiding this thread for an hour is fun!
Definitely enjoyed it, most of the jokes resonated well, and it seemed to hold its own fairly well. It reminded me of a Cheap Seats/Project mix.
You have hit the nail on the head though from others’ comments, some parts did fall flat. More atmosphere would help the show have a lot better vibe. Other people also literally fell flat looking at you Grant - which was enjoyable, the quick cut from wheel to the start of the segment with Grant being shoved mid-DOND plug.
That reminds me, was the wheel actually random or was someone at 10 robotically controlling it. The spinning back and forth did feel a bit scripted and stood out to me a bit as something on-script (most of the show felt that if you didn’t know better, you’d say it was live and unscripted)
Overall, I’ll come back for seconds.
