Everything you need to know - see you next week.
I can’t see it getting a long run. I saw an article on one of the news sites and it hasn’t been getting a good wrap on the socials either
Kitty as guest announcer would be excellent.
Came here to say the same thing. Media Spies seemed to be the only ones with nice thing to say
Feel like the show would have a better chance on the ABC with an older audience. I thought the Jack Thompson choice as guest was odd given who the show was marketed towards but Pang seemed like a genuine fan and interested in his career and plus the numerous references to older movies and a segment on “Yesterday’s News” from the 1970s… I can’t imagine many people under the age of 50 will be interested.
I’m surprised there was so much hate tbh I didn’t think it was that bad.
I’m 26, and I found it funny!
Tonight’s show was okay, some jokes pushed the envelope a little further than anticipated. I enjoy that on HYBPA, but felt a couple went a little too far for comfort. Definitely not Logies standard.
Both interviews and the segments were enjoyable in my opinion, especially the one with Dr Emma West.
There are understandably teething problems, but I’m sure the show will refine itself through the current run, should it be renewed.
I feel Sam could take a page out of Graham Norton, as his monologue at the beginning of the show is quick fire, paired with small amounts of imagery. Having additional ambience with music helps a lot also with pacing.
Tonight’s one felt a little slow with some jokes landings and others not, but he admitted it’d likely be the case anyways. I feel his comedy shined best during the interviews. Dave Taunton‘s presence was very here and there.
Am looking forward to next week’s show!
I didn’t think it was great. I found myself doom scrolling half way through TBH. But i also didn’t think it was as bad as social media is making it out to be.
I thought it was alright and should hopefully improve each week, though will depend on the guests etc.
His opening monologue had some awkward silent pauses, probably needs some backing music or more pictures on screen?
I was disappointed that he lied about the show being live and the bit about checking messages from viewers during the ad break.
I feel like News and The Daily Mail will do this about anything. Truly wonder how much it’s killing the local industry to have such predictable articles.
Enjoyed it, some bits were a bit slow but I think Sam was very nervous. IMO it should be on later, sometime after 10pm. Tonight shows are not 8.40pm shows. Who cares what News Corp or the Daily Fail think! Review in The Age was fairly positive.
Well that would certainly be one way to kill it.
You can’t tell the difference between Dave Thornton and Sam Taunton either? What hope is there?
Maybe take the advice from this:
First night jitters for Sam Pang but don’t write talk show off yet
We really, really wanted it to work, so let’s not do the usual Aussie whinge-fest and write Sam Pang Tonight off just yet.
Most of the jokes were great but the pacing really needs tightening up. Agreed about the monologue having a lot of awkward pauses. Both of the interviews definitely started to drag towards the end. Probably could have chopped a few minutes off both and added another segment in.
Definitely happy to give it time to be refined though!
TV Blackbox’s review:
Ben Pobjie’s review for Mediaweek:
The first episode will be repeated this Friday at 7.30pm. Will they have to edit the Yesterday’s News Today segment since a bare bum was briefly shown in the archive news footage?
I don’t think so. A bare bum is even permitted on a G program let alone a PG or M program like Sam Pang Tonight. As Sam said, it was on the evening news in 1979.
Neighbours is celebrateing 40 years of bare bums from Henry Ramsay to Toadie and Karl Kennedy, just to name a few.
Even Round the Twist had them on a C classification
It could be worse it could have been on the 6pm news like it was in 1979.
