Sale of Southern Cross Television assets to Ten/ADH

Presumably Seven was engaged as a potential buyer. If so, maybe they should have bid higher if they were that keen.

And don’t assume ADH is just going to axe local news. They still have local news obligations and it rates very well.

Correct. Tasmania’s local content requirements will increase with the change in ownership, and the other SCA7 stations will gain requirements for the first time (which just means bare minimum they’ll need to keep making the noodle updates).

And the Number 1 news service in the State is potentially (scarily) a great political platform for them.

Be interesting to see 7’s reaction, if any, it’s in their interests to maintain a channel in the state, even if they don’t own it. If the relationship breaks down with ADH, suppose 7 could try to buy TDT or make some content deal with WIN but both options would be extreme.

Very interesting that Spencer Gulf will regain local news out of this. (Noodles at least)

One problem. If noodle updates, you know what will happen, right? Just stock videos (or videos from their recent archives) to fill up the time while the news is being read. Yes, there will be a presenter (probably coming from Sydney or Melbourne) but no camera people and no reporters will be required on the Spencer Gulf with this, just plain stock footage being played. Stock videos and archive footage from a few years ago being played doesn’t count as local news or relevance to the present day. Seven Regional are already doing this, and so are SCA 10 (soon to be Network 10 in Regional NSW/VIC/ACT/QLD). There are videos on YT that exist demonstrating this.

If anything, if ADH has the money to do so (and if they really do care about increased local news presences), perhaps bring back Spencer Gulf Local News on Seven and re-employee local camera operators and local reporters. There are locals in the areas still reeling from the loss of their local bulletin. Communities like Broken Hill are still isolated. Returning the local bulletin to 7pm on 7two will mean communities like Broken Hill won’t be feeling so isolated anymore. ADH really need to have a good hard think about how they want this to play out. Otherwise, local news won’t really matter in the Spencer Gulf if it’s just going to be noodle updates with just a presenter and stock footage.

Before you go and critisise my comments, please go and watch the recent noodle updates clips on YT. Thank you.

Last time I checked in the region the ABC has three stations producing local breakfast programs, as well as two morning news bulletins on weekdays, so they aren’t exactly isolated.

And I think the people in the region would appreciate at least some form of news with information from across the region rather than getting nothing

The main point is that the information being told is up to date - I doubt many would care about stock footage being used when they are at least getting some form of local content, since according to you

What is happening there now?

On what basis?

It looks like current footage, but in this update notice how the footage seen in this noodle update screams 2021 or 2022? Part of this noodle update shows an Apple MacBook running macOS Monterey, which came out in 2021, for example.

I’ve seen the metro networks use far older footage on their 6pm bulletins. It’s still local news. Who cares.

The average viewer won’t care about those details when all they are after for is the information being read out

I don’t get your obsession with regional networks closing down or locals should only get local news if it’s a formal bulletin

Seriously nobody cares about that. And fwiw a computer bought in 2021 could still be use today so it could be current footage?

Since when did I say I was obsessed?

Yes they would still be using these MacBooks. However Apple will force updates for the newest macOS version whether you like it or not, the only way they would stay on an old macOS version is if they dropped support for the concerned user’s MacBook model.

If that is an M1 MacBook Air from 2020, it’s probably already running macOS Sequoia. Perhaps maybe they either forgot to turn off Automatic Updates or their MacBook is being remotely managed by their University’s administrator?

Based on the multiple posts about TV stations closing down and becoming relays of metro stations

My point still stands. Nobody watching cares what type of Apple mac is being run in incidental footage. Literally nobody.

Well, The Project did say last year that next in the firing line is…

the NT, and all of Tassie.

Mildura lost Channel Ten, now the NT and Tasmania might experience the same thing? It could. And it might happen. Channel 10 affiliates in regional markets that aren’t owned by the respective network have been money-losing ventures, like Mildura. TDT (Tasmania) and DDT (Darwin) are joint ventures.

If that can happen on Seven in Griffith and Mount Gambier/Riverland, it can happen anywhere (in any regional or remote city), and on any channel at any given time.

Has been updated with information about the tv licences the deal includes, also quotes from Jason Morrison.

TNT ‘Channel 7 Tasmania’ Hobart, Launceston, and all regional areas.
TND ‘Channel 7’ Darwin.
GTS/BKN ‘Channels 7,9 & 10’ South Australia’s Spencer Gulf and Broken Hill NSW.
ITQ ‘Channel 7’ Mt Isa, Queensland.
QQQ ‘Channel 7’ Alice Springs, Remote and Regional Queensland and Western NSW.
‘Channel 7’ VAST satellite TV services (North and South) – Qld, NT, SA, NSW.

And includes half ownership of:
TDT ‘Channel 10’ Hobart, Launceston, Regional Tasmania.
DTD ‘Channel 10’ Darwin.
CTD ‘Channel 10’ VAST satellite TV service – Qld, NT, SA, NSW

“This is an important day for our company and the future of Tasmanian and regional TV, and it brings a new owner into the Australian media industry at a time of consolidation.

“We bring a commitment to local and regional employment with plans to invest in TV production while making sure local TV stays Australian-owned.

“These stations are in critical and growing markets that show great audience and economic resilience. The TV markets enjoy good local and national advertiser support.

“Australian Digital Holdings has been working hard to acquire this group since the middle of last year, and we recognise the significant role that local TV services play in each of our cities and towns.

“We’ll aim to make it better.

“In time, there are plans to restore local news services and make sure that communities in major centres get the coverage of local issues and events they want and deserve.

“7Tasmania (TNT) has a market-leading Nighty News service with newsrooms in Launceston and Hobart that consistently command the highest audience share of any capital city news service. The Tasmanian team should be proud of the station’s long and distinguished reputation in being ‘Tasmania’s choice’.

“We aim to expand news coverage across the group.

“Australian Digital Holdings is a privately owned group that has produced independent streaming television for the past three years.

Perhaps people should wait until the deal is finished before updating the Wikipedia page

Finally, a commitment to local news.

If they’re going to expand local news coverage as per their statement (and I’m hoping ADH are reading this), then the first thing they need to do is bring back 7 Spencer Gulf News as a full bulletin, not just noodle updates. That’s how viewers had it, as a full bulletin. Time to bring it back again. Then do Darwin (the market abandoned by 9News), giving viewers there a commercial TV news bulletin once more.

And can some members here please stop saying I’m obsessed? I’m just saying there should be local news presences in regional and remote areas like Darwin and the Spencer Gulf, at a time when they need it most.

But what if the ‘local news’ they introduced/improved are more aligned to the values of ADH’s other half? We may see something more like Sinclair’s local news during Trump’s first office, Terrorism Alert desk and all.
