Free Kayo Sports coverage will be tempting
The match last night rated well for a Saturday night. The match came in at 6th place ( pre-match: 13th and post-match: 15th). A good rrsult for Channel 10.
But the sad reality is that the wallabies and Rugby Australia are still on a decline. Hope they bounce back soon, or the game will be dead and no tv station will buy the rights.
I wonder how much of that result is in part due to the lack of sports content in competition. We are in that weird part of the year between Summer and Winter sports
The Wallabies are a long-term revival project not short term.
They were without their two key playmakers last night and unfortunately it showed the lack of depth in those positions. Having said that, there is a lot of promising youngsters in the mix that were part of the side that went close to winning the Junior World Cup side last year.
How coach Dave Rennie gets those players integrated will be key. He is looking towards 2023 in many ways.
Anyway, onto the rights…the quality of a future Super Rugby competition is going to make or break the deal. NZR and RA need to get around the table and ensure they work together in the future, with NZR being a bit pigheaded by suggesting they’d go it alone.
So sad for C10
I loved their Union coverage
Pretty decent for the average consumer as I would definitely get a Stan subscription.
But will we see rugby disappear from pubs and other public venues as businesses will need to purchase a separate service for what is fast becoming a niche sport
Good move if it happens. One live Super Rugby game a week on FTA is a step in the right direction.
As positive as a game a week in front of the paywall on Kayo would have been, there’ll be far more eyeballs finding it on FTA.
Imo the coverage on Ten was solid for what it was, but Fox’s was awfully tired so hopefully there’s a bit of a shake up from the move to Nine.
If RA do reach an agreement with Nine, it’ll be interesting to see whether Stan would use the rugby as a ‘loss-leader’ and include it as part of the standard subscription or separate it into an add-on package
Some good news (potentially)
Very good news. Suspect this (trans-Tasman comp) will have been a key driver for Channel Nine.
The Nine Network is set to become the new home of rugby union.
The Australian reports that Rugby Australia has brokered a deal that will see Super Rugby and Wallabies tests live on Channel Nine and the streaming service Stan.
Fox Sports has broadcast rugby for 25 years.
It’s been reported that Nine’s offer to Rugby Australia was about $30 million, plus free advertising.
While it’ll be good news for Nine/Stan, there’s going to be a lot of questions asked of/criticisms leveled against Rugby Australia considering the expected deal will be $10 million less per year than the Foxtel offer they rejected last year
Yes, but it might be the better option, considering it has FTA components.
That’s the point I was just about to add to my post. Some might fairly argue that the additional FTA exposure RA will get from Nine makes up for the financial shortfall of rejecting Foxtel’s initial offer. On the other hand though, RA is an organisation strapped for cash at the moment and an extra $10 million per year would have helped them out
RA wanted free to air. Foxtel can’t provide it (free on kayo isn’t good enough IMO) and 10 didn’t want it. It’s a real gamble and Covid certainly didn’t help, but I think it’s going to take a year or so to find out.
Is there any chance channel 10 would still be part of the deal in any capacity?
No. That is so obvious. Its 9 only. Why would 10 be involved?
Pubs won’t be able air Super Rugby around the country like what Fox Sports is doing
?
