Good to see Warburton setting his priorities in the right order…

Can he get his own company’s act together before even thinking about getting more sports deals.

Which would cause issues with the 8pm game (assuming there would still be 2 Friday night games).

They couldn’t push 8pm back any further.

is there a problem running two games at once? honestly when i was a kid watching AFL all games were on sat arvos. the broncos will have to deal with a split audiance on a friday night

Other then potentially splitting the television audience, not really especially if the games are in different cities. We seem to be unique when it comes to this - most other major sporting codes dont have an issue with concurrent games

TV networks would prefer no overlap so they can have a viewing audience over say 4-6 hours, rather than split in two over a shorter period.

This is in the hope that some viewers will watch both games.

The Daily Telegraph is claiming that ‘Seven insiders’ have said that the network has not contacted the NRL, and are repeating the claim that Ten are also not interested.

That’s a shame if true would of spiced things up tomorrow.
michael chammas was on SEN today sticking by his story. Most likely nothing changes just a discount in tv money for the remainder of the season.

Adelaide Oval was scheduled to host one State of Origin game this year. Will this happen under the proposed arrangement?

Presumably not with SA’s borders also locked down

All that talk about Nine walking away and Seven or Ten coming in was all hot air. Nine and Foxtel have agreed to a season restart according to The Daily Telegraph, though how much money they will pay and the length of the season still needs to be negotiated. The State of Origin could be over three weeks in November after the Grand Final possibly in late October. (?)

Todd Greenberg has stood down as CEO effective immediately

He’s been made a scapegoat. I don’t think he was all that bad as a ceo tbh. But clearly that V’landys is more authoritarian and intrusive as a chairman and really wants to be CEO. The NRL are a mess but I don’t see them getting any better whilst V’landys is there and with nine and fox as broadcastersZ they need a complete clean out and restructure and new broadcasters.

I think Greenberg paid the price for botching the revival of the 2020 season, by forgetting to consult with the broadcasters first.

Greenberg’s departure papers were basically stamped when V’Landys took over. You can chalk this one up to Nine who have been whiteanting Greenberg for sometime and News who wouldnt say a bad word about V’Landys

I see that Nine joined the V’landys fan club earlier today as well:

Greenberg was criticised about the size of his salary during the pay negotiations with the Rugby League Players’ Association earlier this month, before agreeing to take the same cut as was handed to the players while the game was shut down.

He was reportedly left out of last week’s talks between the NRL and its TV broadcast partners, the Nine Network and Fox Sports, with V’landys representing the league.

So how much of what Channel 9 said is actually something they’re concerned about and not just a move to oust Greenberg?

Lol so much for Nine wanting exclusivity.

I dont think its just exclusivity they wanted - I think they really want is control.

Nine want the teams to have greater control of the game - on the face of it, that makes some sense, but the reality is that the clubs struggle to control their own part of the world and collectively it’s unlikely that they are going to be able to reach consensus - this opens up an avenue for Nine to exploit. They simply do divide and conquer.

Locking in a deal now, at what will possibly be the bottom of the market will destroy what probably should be seen as Greenberg’s legacy to the game - increased funding to other levels of the game, the womens competition, the digital arm, the international game. Expansion will no longer be viable, things like the Nines will go.
