I think the new Queensland team should be based in the central coast of the state.
I guess there’s the old question of is there enough quality players to fill these teams.
I think the new Queensland team should be based in Betoota. ![]()
There’s not to fill the current number of teams we have. It’s become abundantly clear already this year.
Sunshine Coast?
Bring back the South Queensland Crushers, and be Gold Coast’s local derby rivals. While the Dolphins and Broncos can be the other truly local derby rivals.
But jokes aside - as @foxyrover said, surely Sunshine Coast is the next region to be included if a 5th Qld team is to be included. The Melbourne Storm team took games to the Sunshine Coast Stadium in 2020 during the Covid era in 2020 and 2021, and there even a Finals Match played there in 2021 too. So it could work?
I think the Dolphins could end up playing some home games at Sunshine Coast stadium when it’s redeveloped, Kayo stadium is too small.
Yeah would be perfect to have a team there with the Olympics upgrades to the stadium.
The west of Brisbane and Ipswich would presumably be the next growth area. The Newtown Jets have floated that idea of a combined Ipswich/Newtown “The Jets” team to tap into both fan bases, kinda like the Perth situation.
I’d have to think regardless of talent, there’s more broadcast rights money for more Queensland matches than there are from NZ - despite that being a much smarter thing to hopefully poach union players who want to stay in NZ, as a way of bridging that lack of depth.
QRL boss Ben Ikin makes case for fifth Queensland club to launch before Brisbane 2032 Olympics
While a second New Zealand team on the South Island remains the favourite to win the NRL’s 20th licence, Brisbane holds two powerful bargaining chips in the expansion fight.
“Everything lines up to me to suggest a fifth NRL franchise could work in Queensland.”
Ikin said a Central Queensland bid should not be discounted, while the QRL chief executive believes Brisbane’s western corridor has the resources to ensure an NRL operation is successful.
“Anywhere you go in Queensland, they will probably make an argument they can host an NRL club,” Ikin said.
“The economics of the western corridor of Brisbane are very strong.
“In terms of population growth, it’s one of the fastest growing regions in Australia.
Brisbane’s western corridor bid to table massive $60m investment deal to win NRL’s 20th licence
The Ipswich Jets will table a monster $60 million expansion bid to win the NRL’s 20th licence as the ARL Commission ramps-up plans for a fifth Queensland franchise.
Overseas investors with ownership tentacles in the NBA, NFL, baseball and the English Premier League are now turning their attention to the NRL and want to buy into rugby league via a 20th team in Brisbane’s western corridor.
Decent comeback attempt, but no more undefeated teams in 2026.

That team also score less than 20 points for the first time this season.
Again, if you would like to add some context that would be great. The Bulldogs ended up winning the match 32-16 after the Panthers pulled level at 16-all just after half time.
I was getting nervous there for a while, but the Dragons came through in the end. Love six to start the year and well on the way to their first inverse premiership since 1938. I’m already christening the appropriate kitchen utensil.
St George just need to bite the bullet and get rid of the pensioners. Cook needs to go to ESL if he wants to continue, Holmes needs to play reserve grade despite his salary and Gutherson needs to play a different role.
A Queensland rivalry that never disappoints…
What a thrilling end coming down between the Broncos-Cowboys.
Cowboys defeated Broncos 35-31.
What a game.
Fun fact: this is the second time in succession that the Cowboys have beaten the Broncos at Suncorp after their opponents won the premiership the previous year (also in 2007).
In fact, the Cowboys beat the Broncos twice in 2006, including in a game in Townsville where JT suffered a knee injury.
Fun fact 1: the 35-31 scoreline is the first time that it has occurred in the NRL/ARL/NSWRL history - going by some social media posts.
Not so fun fact 2: sack Flanagan. Dragons are crap. Bring back Steve Price or Paul McGregor as coach.
