Mixed results for Australia at the inaugural World Cup Nines in Sydney last night. The men’s team beat NZ in the final but the women’s team lost to the Kiwis in the decider.
There were more headlines for Lebanon fielding 2 ineligible players and for starting a biff with Wales than the actual game play. Basically 2 of the Lebanese players were too young to play. When the squad was selected they thought they were playing under RLIF laws (who allow players who are 16 to play) but the rules for this tournament were under NRL sanction who have a minimum age of 18.
Article on Fairfax Digital suggest ARL Commision will take all digital media in house.
Various scenarios like selling game as seperate rights and also various levels of non to exclusive rights for streaming.
How they achieve that with all NRL games on the anti siphoning list will be interesting to see let alone SOO and international matches.
Of that starts outright bidding wars then the only media outlet that has they type of money is TEN and they will have to have a streaming partner join them.
Yes I noticed this article. I find the NRL is not very professional when negotiating rights deals. Their last two have been a mess. They always seem to stuff them up somehow.
They have their own subscription streaming service do they not?
This is such a terrible idea that promotes questionable quality coverage and allows the sport to control their desired narrative
We’ve seen this in the NBL and Supercars recently and the growth of in-house reporting from the likes of the AFL and Cricket Australia is starting to dominate the reporting.
they do and they also need content for it, the only way to get content is to buy content or make it yourself.
They will need a partner for streaming, excuse me while I cough “247 sports” ah that’s better now that I have cleared by throat.
well yeah, that is the same thing as owning a forum and preventing people from expressing their views … oh wait! (that was sarcasm)
Supercars Media does a great job with the production however its way to biased towards itself, has been that way since its formation.
The same can be said of News Corp doing AFL and NRL over the years.
Some of whats happened this year in the sport and then its coverage does not cast the arrangement in a good light - especially on Fox where the coverage is designed to be ‘seamless’. Fox tried to supplement their round coverage like they have with other sports outside of race weekends, but other then the “Supercars Life” puff-piece (that isnt produced by Fox) its gone by the wayside to the detriment of the coverage of the sport (almost as if that was the desire).
Oh, its not limited to a few sports or a few media outlets - at least News calls out issues (on and off-field) in both the AFL and NRL
They could build packages like the Premier League or the American sports do for their domestic coverage
Why would you bring a brand (and not a very good one0 that is associated with college sports to Australia for a different purpose?
it’s about digital media and how its consumed.
10 Play is not the correct format to consume such digital media.
Our sports organizations don’t do this to their detriment. If only they see the foresight to produce different Packages for different media. It would make much more sense and seamless.
In comparison to a lot of other markets, we get a lot more coverage (and a lot less games) - we aren’t as constrained from a practical standpoint (like say the US where there are so many games on at one time) or the UK where whole kick-off timeslots are not broadcast. We’ve seen a movement to limiting overlapping games (The NRL dont do it and the AFL only do it in one or two timeslots a week) for the benefit of television.
Packaging may need to see that change to make the packages have value - making some FTA games exclusively live may provide value too. I’d like to see better balance on the schedule - every team should play in every available timeslot at least once, it shouldnt be driven around broadcasters.
Same goes for Tennis Australia having in-house productions of summer of tennis.
I would like to think that “Thursday night and Friday 6:00pm Friday night” are killed off and never allowed to return again.
How would I do TV rights deal
Everything is branded as NRL, so that goes from visual over-lays to dress uniform for the announce teams.
Friday night - 7:45pm kick off
Saturday afternoon - 2:45pm kick off (this game could be done from NZ on weekends that NZ has home game allocated local time 4:45pm)
Saturday afternoon - 5:45pm kick off (this game could be done from NZ on weekends that NZ has home game allocated local time 7:45pm)
Saturday night 7:45pm kick off
Sunday afternoon 2:00pm kick off
Sunday afternoon 4:00pm kick off
Sunday afternoon 6:00pm kick off
Monday Night 7:15pm kick off
Primary games:
Friday night 7:45pm - FTA + exclusive FTA streaming only
Saturday night 7:45pm - FTA + exclusive FTA streaming only
Sunday afternoon 4:000pm FTA + exclusive FTA streaming only
Monday night 7:15pm kick off FTA + exclusive FTA streaming only
The FTA providers who has the rights can on-sell replays only not allowed to simulcast with pay TV or subscription streaming service.
Everything is branded as NRL, so that goes from visual over-lays to dress uniform for the announce teams.
Secondary games:
Saturday afternoon - 2:45pm kick off - pay TV exclusive / non exclusive subscription streaming
Saturday afternoon - 5:45pm kick off pay TV exclusive / non exclusive subscription streaming
Sunday afternoon 1:15pm kick off pay TV exclusive / non exclusive subscription streaming
Sunday afternoon 6:00pm kick off pay TV exclusive / non exclusive subscription streaming
Finals series:
All games exclusive to FTA and FTA streaming service, pay TV and subscription streaming service only allowed high light package re: mini-games.
Grand Final: exclusive to FTA and FTA streaming service, pay TV and subscription streaming service only allowed full replay 48 hours after the game has ended.
If non exclusive subscription streaming services wants to have their own announcement that is at their cost.
State or Origin - FTA Exclusive / FTA streaming exclusive, no pay TV / subscription streaming access all even for replays.
Internationals - when involving Australia - FTA exclusive / FTA Streaming exclusive
Internationals - for non Australian games - pay TV exclusive / non exclusive subscription streaming
International Nine / or Club Nines - pay TV exclusive / non exclusive subscription streaming
NRLW at the moment needs FTA to survive, pay TV and subscription streaming is not the best way forward for the woman’s games.
Anything else falls under non-exclusive open to all.
Why so harsh on pay TV?
because the ARLC have to get as much money as they can from FTA as that is the widest viewing audience and with FTA providers all having streaming services that means they should be rewarded by also not having to simulcast with pay TV/subscription streaming.
We have all seen how pay TV / subscription streaming has cannibalised viewership by splitting the audience numbers up, that can simply not be allowed any further.
If ARLC decided to bring production in-house then that leaves the door open for Nine to walk away and go all in for AFL.
It’s been long known that Seven* is only interested in SOO & Internationals and possibly getting the finals series + GF and thats it and would be prepared to pay $$$ just for those rights only on an exclusive base.
*Granted under the old management, who knows if the new management feels the same way.
Then there is the fact that the AFL want a 2 year extension with Seven which could see Nine left with no major mens winter sport for 2 years.
I still really believe that TEN is aiming it’s bazookas as ARLC wanting to get everything they can get their hands on, if TEN can find the right streaming service partner then Rugby League is going to TEN / ??? streaming service partner (tip: not Kayo).
It will be interesting to see how Fox Sports handles having to “re-brand” its Rugby League coverage (it’s been done before in 1998 through 2000 when they shared pay TV rights with Optus TV), hey their might be another pay TV provider to jump in, who knows.
It all comes down to how ARLC does its TV rights package.
Couldn’t it just be a clean feed with no graphics and then the networks out their own graphics and commentators over the top?
NRL Nines will come to Australia for the first time. The tournament will be held at Perth’s HBF Park on February 14-15, 2020.
It’s a bit hot to be playing league in Perth at that time of year. Would pretty much have to be played at night time only.
