Rugby League

I was one of the 65 people who were on the hill today at Kogarah Oval. None of us were giving the Dragons most hope to start off with.

At half time, we were just 2 points behind the Storm. and started to feel optimistic. When the Storm’s “last try” was disallowed at the end of the match, that’s when we realised that we had the game in the bag.

Go the Dragons  Wooooo hooooo.

I was at the game as well, standing at the southern end for most of the match. If you saw a Red Bull Ampol Racing umbrella, that was me.

You were there too? No way. Sadly, I didn’t notice the umbrella.

I was in front of the Big Screen, with the “Dragon Army” with the banners. I did not hold in banners though, and wore a raincoat for the first half, and had a red t-shirt shown for the second half

Should I also mention, I saw Nine News sports presenter James Bracey at the ground, though he was dressed casually.

Maybe for the North Sydney Bears in NSW cup

I hope it never gets off the Ground, The Western Bears are in Crisis.

Rejoice for Eels fans, with new coach Jason Ryles getting the first win of his career in a golden point finish, 23-22 over the Dragons.

Eels centre Zac Lomax kicked the winning field goal in the 83rd minute… not often you see centres taking the field goal shot, since they are usually positioned out towards the wing.

I think I can recall Valentine Holmes kicking a field goal (while playing for the Cowboys) against the Dragons in GP back in 2020.

Anthony Minichiello and Luke Burt have also kicked field goals despite being backline players, while there have been random forwards who have kicked field goals including Ian Hindmarsh and Nathan Cayless in 2007 and 2008 respectively.

Cameron Smith also kicked four field goals in his NRL career.

Les Dragoons have an appalling record in close games. Losing to Parramatta and beating the Storm is classic St George Illawarra.

What goes around… does go around.
Round 1: Storm > Eels
Round 4: Dragons > Storm
Round 5: Eels > Dragons

Another example this season:
Round 1: Raiders > Warriors
Round 2: Warriors > Manly
Round 3: Manly > Canberra

🚨 A Storm is brewing at the MCG… 👀

The Melbourne Storm is in talks to take a blockbuster NRL game to the ‘G while the AFL is out of town for Gather Round. 2026 is a serious possibility, if not, 2027.

The NRL could be sneaking into the MCG while the AFL isn’t home!

Trent Kniese also filed a radio report for 3AW. Basically it said that the Storm were considering hosting the Warriors at the MCG to tape into the international audience. So far there had not been much resistance from the AFL.

What say would they really have?

Makes sense given this game is always a sellout.

It hasn’t been very well promoted here either, I didn’t even know my Sharkies were playing in Perth tomorrow until a week ago.

Not that I would have gone, had already booked QLD (where I am now) and was happy to not see the inside of a plane for a while having just been to Vegas for the Sharks season opener.

League and Oval stadiums don’t mix. I used to see the see the storm at Marvel and also went to a state of origin there. your jsut too far from the action.

I also saw the Sharks play the Rabbits at Optus in 2023 (last time I saw them win in person - six games ago now!).

I didn’t find the oval shape that much of an issue, with a 45k ish crowd there was still a great atmosphere. Yes, rectangular is better, of course.
