This has been an unpredictable start to the season - the Roosters whom the Broncos thrashed by 50-14 just over a week ago upset the reigning premiers Penrith in Parramatta last night; and as you say the Broncos are copping a reality check against the Raiders as we speak.

The Sea Eagles, who were so impressive against the Cowboys last Saturday night, were beaten by the Warriors (who had been thrashed by the Raiders in Las Vegas) last night as well.

Reminds me of an interesting stretch early in the 2005 season when:

  • Round 4: Storm 50 def Broncos 4
  • Round 5: Broncos 54 def Eels 14
  • Round 6: Eels 26 def Storm 14

The last match in this stretch saw Greg Inglis make his NRL debut, just three months after turning 18.

The Broncos’ loss to the Storm inspired this infamous NRMA Insurance ad:

In that same stretch:

  • Round 4: Raiders def Dragons 42-22
  • Round 5: Dragons def Sea Eagles 32-6
  • Round 6: Sea Eagles def Raiders 36-14

Despite Manly’s win in round six, the Raiders were still top of the ladder, but would ultimately finish the season second-last only ahead of the Newcastle Knights (who had lost their first 13 matches that season).

Also worth noting the Eels lost to each of the bottom four teams (Bulldogs, Rabbitohs, Raiders and Knights).

Great win by the Tiges today, 32-6 over the Eels. Dylan Brown didn’t do much, probably too busy counting the millions he’ll get from Newcastle.

Can’t see Parra improving much until Moses is back, but that’s still 5-6 weeks away

Very happy with my Sharkies getting up 36-12 over the Cows last night, i was worried that Vegas and Townsville in that heat back to back might have been too much, but they looked good and showed no signs of a Vegas hangover.

Including my uncle who lives in Canberra and never misses a Raider’s home game

  • Saturday 16 August – South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Parramatta Eels
  • Sunday 17 August – Wests Tigers vs Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles

I think it would have been better to put the 3 games on the same day as a mini Magic Round of sorts… I reckon that would sell out.

South Sydney’s long-time mascot Charlie Gallico has kept his job after issuing an apology for pushing nine-year-old Cronulla Sharks fan Benji Agius during Saturday’s NRL match.

Gallico, dressed as ‘Reggie Rabbit’, was filmed walking towards the tunnel at Shark Park before turning and shoving Benji.

The Rabbitohs opened an investigation after the boy’s mother Caroline lodged a complaint, with the family, security, Sharks and NRL all involved.

Gallico initially defended his actions, saying he had been grabbed first.

“I apologise if I did something wrong but I don’t think I did,” he said on Monday.

But a club statement on Tuesday said Gallico, who is in his 80s, had now “accepted full responsibility for his actions” and apologised to the family.

A bit of random league history.

On this day in 2008, Parramatta Eels captain Nathan Cayless kicked an unexpected field goal to level scores against the Newcastle Knights at 23-all; the match went to golden point, during which Luke Burt kicked a field goal of his own to see the Eels home 24-23.
