Most of which would be a top little radio station called Crow 90.7 from Wondi (Near Kingaroy)

Today, we’re off to Mildura:

Triple M took the top spot with 30.2% (+10.6 from 2023), followed by Hit with 29.1% (-4.0), River 1467 with 15% (-1.0), and ABC Mildura-Swan Hill with 8% (-1.1).

In the demos, Triple M wins the 18-64s, with River topping the 65+.

In breakfast, Triple M’s Matman topped the slot with 31.6% (+11.2), followed by Hit’s Dan & Christie with 30% (-4.8), and River’s Dave Burrows with 14.4% (+0.3). In drive, Triple M’s Rush Hour topped the slot with 33% (+11.9), followed by Hit’s Carrie & Tommy with 31.2% (-7.2), and Jonesy & Amanda on River with 11.8% (+0.5).

The ā€œOther Stationsā€ share this survey is at 11%, up 1.8 from 2023.

An incredibly odd survey for Hit, crashing 10% in the ages of 10-39 and up 8% in 55-64?!

Then there’s River falling 13.5% in 65+. That’s basically the only demographic that finds that music position appealing.

Don’t think more needs to be said about JJJ’s fall. It’s been everywhere from metros to regionals to regionals that barely get surveyed.

I suspect the reason for such a large drop for the 65+ group on River is the cohort not liking the national shows (Jonesy & Amanda plus Christian O’Connell) from 4PM onwards, which conversely may also explain why there was an overall increase in the 10 to 54 demographics for River, as these are the age ranges most likely to interact with the programs.

Hit however is the real tragic, over the last three surveys it has lost a huge percentage of listeners across all of the demographics. I would not be surprised if this is the station that gets sold due to the voices rule as a fallout of the SCA merger with Seven West Media.

Also probably a product of a small sample size, it probably only takes a few listeners to generate a swing like that.

Triple M is number one for the 18 to 39 year olds.

Maybe River needs to switch to FM?

I’m sure they would love to, but there’s a process for conversion with ACMA, who work at a snails pace. As it’s a ā€œcompetitive marketā€ it’s not as easy as solo markets where there’s only one commercial operator (eg. Horsham).

The other thing too is on its own, the format River runs isn’t really competitive with what Triple M and Hit are doing. FM may help a little but won’t be a big success.

Next stop, Geelong:
https://radioinfo.com.au/news/big-love-for-local-radio-as-k-rock-bay-93-9-dominate-xtra-insights-survey-1-for-geelong/

K Rock remain on top with 17.8% (+4.9 from 2022), followed by Bay 93.9 with 17.1% (+5.3), and 774 ABC Melbourne with 8.4% (-0.6).

In the demos, K Rock wins in the under-55s, whilst Bay tops the 55-64s (just 0.1 ahead of 774), and 774 ABC dominate in the 65+.

In breakfast, K Rock’s Tom & Loggy topped the slot with 18.7% (+7.3), followed by Bay’s Mill & Nic with 16.7% (+6.4). In drive, K Rock’s Tim & Davo won with 15.7% (+2.9), followed by Bay’s Craig Meddings with 13.9% (+3.6).

The ā€œOther Stationsā€ share this survey is at 47.2%, down 9.2 from 2022. Most of that share would be towards the Melbourne commercial stations, which can be heard across Geelong loud & clear.

Good upswings for the locals which I’m sure they’re happy about. But not reporting 47% of listening is a bit disingenuous - it’s far more than just a two horse race down there, and everyone knows it.

Yes, I’m surprised Melbourne stations aren’t listed like the Sydney and Brisbane stations are in the Central Coast and Gold Coast surveys respectively. The Geelong numbers suggest a similar level of penetration too eg so FOX is probably rating 2-3%, maybe higher?

Yes, much of the area gets a local signal from Dandenong, though there is some shadowing as you move further inland.

FWIW, Geelong is the seventh most populous license area, just 15k behind Gold Coast. It reminds me a lot of San Jose, California, which is a large market in its own right with its own stations, but is so close to San Francisco that that market’s stations perform strongly as well. In that case, San Jose is actually an ā€œembeddedā€ market - it get its own survey, but that data is also part of the larger San Francisco survey.

I’m not familiar with the Emerald radio landscape, but assume there’s a community station making up most of the ā€œotherā€. There wouldn’t be much overspill I don’t think.

Agree, Emerald is fairly remote so virtually nothing from Rocky or anywhere else, and I’m not even sure there is a community station there anymore, 4EEE was long gone.

And no local Triple J, I assume the ā€˜Other’ is mostly streaming, including Triple J streaming and others.

Yeah they might have been able to get a bit of 4RO or 4MK back in the day, because both of those signals used to get out really well to the south and west in the 70s and 80s, but not these days.

Ironically when I was growing up in Maryborough and DX’ing at night I used to get 4HI really well in the early and mid 80s. Also 4MK was the other one I could reliably pick up. And they were both pretty cool stations back then too.

Similar here in Newcastle, whereby 4MK was the most northerly station I could regularly DX at night back in the 80s.

I also remember getting 4HI at Coffs Harbour at night instead of my local 2HD.

Yeah I don’t know what was going on with 4MK but it was better than 4RO and 4CC.

I actually rarely got anything north of 4MK either, even in Maryborough. Occasionally 4TO and 4AY, but never 4CA.

Probably to do with how close to the coast the transmitter was and the directional pattern. 4CD/CC would have been trying to get a signal towards the west into Rockhampton rather than north south. 4MK was probably mostly aiming for N/S as the major lobes of the directional array.
