Regional Radio Ratings

The survey period is Feb 9 - Mar 11. If I’m not mistaken, the radio services resumed normalcy at the end of January.

Yes, in stereo and was complete with RDS including song info when I passed through last July Sounded great! A shame it’s just 1kw, but that’s enough for whole of town coverage.

Hit remains in their usual place because it’s the only music station in town if you’re not also a classical aficionado.

There are apparently 0 evening listeners. That’s also the figure for ABC Western QLD in every daypart - might as well close it off.

Even ABC Classic draws 100 in mornings and weekends.

ABC Western Queensland is based in Longreach, a long way from Mount Isa. I am not sure why it’s included in the survey? Maybe on the off chance the AM signal gets some fortuitous coverage into Mount Isa but would be largely redundant given ABC NW QLD is based in Mount Isa.

Yeah, why survey the two separately? Odd

Sounds like a market ripe for an FM conversion for 4LM too

It’s weird that 4LM doesn’t just run a classic hits/AC jukebox format in a market like this.

The main chance of getting a signal from 4QL Longreach would be at night - the 10kw signal would be pretty easy to get. I suppose there could be some remote properties on the LAP that can’t get a signal on FM from Mt Isa but can tune in after sunset.

What does 4LM run? Anything live & local? They don’t even have a website.

Given the 4LM ratings have tripled since the last survey, that suggests there’s been a format change of some sort?

Could also be due to a small sample size, would only take a few respondents to generate a swing like that?

i suspect it may be the latter

I believe it’s mostly talk but with some music. It’s mostly networked with the likes of 4SB, 4HI etc as part of the Resonate Radio Network. I recall driving through Kingaroy last year and there was some music but then it was a networked talk show.

Looking at the longer term trend, ABC Shepparton have gone from 15.5 to 5.3 over the last 10 years. It’s a pretty steady decline to irrelevance with Triple J now the most popular ABC station:

Interestingly, the fade of the ABC across of the age cohorts is less steady (although this in part may be due to audience measurement sample sizes). In particular, coming out of COVID in Oct 21, there was a marked drop in the key 55-64 cohort.

very interesting analysis!

Looks like the station has been too dependent on the 65+ and as they are dying off the younger ones coming into that demographic aren’t taking their place?

There was also a marked interest in the 25-39 demo in 2021-23. Now suddenly no one in that demo cares anymore.

Next stop, Kingaroy:

Hit remain on top with 27.3% (+3.4 from 2023), followed by 4SB with 19.2% (+10.4), and ABC Southern QLD with 13.7% (+1.0).

Hit tops the under-55s, with ABC Southern QLD #1 in the 55+. 4SB is the #1 commercial station in the 65+.

In breakfast, Hit’s Bronte & Lakey was #1 with 24.7% (+0.8), followed by 4SB’s Larry with 20.5% (+13.0), and ABC Southern QLD’s David Iliffe with 13.7% (+0.5).

The “Other Stations” share this survey is at 28.7%, down 9.8 from 2023.

Star 92.1 from Wangaratta (its transmitter on the top of the Warbys reaches Shepp like a local signal) has a good chunk of the other stations.
