Regional Radio Ratings

Indeed, you won’t be surprised. Ok in some parts when driving and elevated, fleetingly.

Plenty of stronger signal options of Black Mt, Dulong, Bald Hills and in home, DAB+ via external antenna.

Next stop, Toowoomba: http://www.radioalive.com.au/RA/media/General/Documents/Surveys%20for%20Regional/TOOWOOMBA-XTRA-INSIGHTS-PUBLIC-SURVEY-RESULT_1.pdf?ext=.pdf

Hit remains at #1 with 30.4%, up 3.9% from 2018, followed by ABC Southern QLD with 13.2% (-0.9), JJJ with 6.6% (steady) & Triple M (4GR) with 5.4%, who took a big fall by 5.9%. It’s worth noting that during the previous survey, Triple M in the Darling Downs had a “Classic Hits” format. Further down, 4WK had 3.9% (-1.5), followed by RN with 2.7% (-0.8) & 4AK with 2% (+0.3).

In the demos, Hit is #1 with the under-55s, and was very close to topping the 55-64s (beating out Triple M in the process), with ABC Southern QLD winning the demo by just 0.1% & absolutely dominating in the 65+.

In breakfast, Hit’s Cliffo & Gabbi, networked from Townsville, won with 31.7%, with ABC Southern QLD’s David Iliffe 2nd with 15.1%, followed by JJJ’s Bryce & Ebony with 7.3%, and Triple M’s Lee Faulkner at 5.3%.

The “Other Stations” share is at 33.8%, up from 29.1% in 2018. Most of that would be towards River 94.9 from Ipswich, which I understand has a huge following in Toowoomba, and would probably rate higher than the local Triple M.

Gee that’s a hell of a hit to the artist formerly known as 4GR. But if you change the name and change the music for the worse, it’s no surprise you’ll lose listeners.

4WK is a pretty depressing figure too there, especially considering it has the advantage of being on FM in town where 4GR doesn’t. Shows the piped-in talk from 2SM doesn’t cut it in a competitive market, something we’ve seen elsewhere too.

Agreed that other stations figure is huge, it’s like what we see in other markets where there is a quasi-commercial community station. I suspect you’re right that River accounts for a good portion of that. But geez there’s a market crying out for a proper adult music/classic hits station.

I’m kinda amazed 4AK can even get 2% with the FM Super Network format on an AM station.

Of all the markets where BOG should be pushing for digital ASAP, that should be top, even above Newcastle.

I don’t understand why BOG doesn’t put the Hot AC Super Network format on the 4WK FM frequency and put a Talkback/Classic Hits format on the 4AK frequency. They would give SCA a good run for their money.

That’s a sensible idea - do a 4BC/4BH style frequency swap and put 4AK’s music format on 963/95.5 and leave 4WK’s talk to 1242 only. I think it’s just legacy as 4AK has been the music station for a long time.

I personally think the BOG FM log is a bit more suited to a solus market, but with 4GR’s failings it could be a good time to switch it and invite more people to switch over who wouldn’t necessarily listen on AM.

No probably about it. River 94.9 would form the biggest part of the ‘‘other station’’ share, and they’d definitely be out-rating the local Triple M by 2 or 3 times. I’d estimate at least 20 - 25% share for River in Toowoomba out of the 33.8%. The rest would be the community station and a small % of Brisbane station fringe reception.

Absolute train wreck results for the local AM’s. Of course we shouldn’t be surprised by the BOG poor showing, but 4GR is the biggest tragedy. 4GR is probably the best example of the absolutely ridiculous decision to rebrand heritage AM stations to Triple M. What a complete joke. 4GR was iconic in Toowoomba and with the superior sound of River 94.9 on FM the heritage brand and local identity was the ONLY chance they had to retain decent ratings. SCA should hang their heads. I reckon at least 1% of their measly 5.4% is probably Triple M Brisbane as well!

Its just weird hearing Triple M on a AM station.

I don’t whether I have got used to listening to FM, but I find it hard listening to a music station on AM.

Depends. I’m 99% on DAB these days but I do listen to 4KQ and 4BH on my AM Sony Walkman and they don’t sound too bad actually. Depends on the radio I guess.

But Triple M on AM is just wrong.

Agreed. Clearly the decision to brand regional AM stations as Triple M was made by people who’ve got absolutely no idea how MMM was one of the pioneering brands for FM commercial radio in Australia.

Triple AM. Lol

I reckon community 4DB-FM (102.7) would get a fair chunk of the other, a bit also for the Light 92.9 Christian station, Brisbane AMs and FMs would get 1-2% each. 4BH not so much being too close to 864.

Not sure about River getting 20% though, sounds a bit high for an out of market station to effectively be the 2nd highest overall.

River is very popular in Toowoomba and would easily be 2nd or 3rd in the ratings if it was included.

Yeah and I have a girlfriend she just goes to another school so you won’t be able to meet her

Maybe she knows where all the Triple M listeners went then…

River’s signal in Toowoomba is like a local station. You’d be hard pressed to tell it apart from Hit in terms of strength.

I doubt the Brisbane AM’s would even get 1% or 2%, their signals don’t really get up the range Perhaps 612 ABC but they’re not really listenable up there. The FM’s a bit better for sure.

Down in the Apple Isle’s 2nd largest city for today’s ratings results: http://www.radioalive.com.au/RA/media/General/Documents/Surveys%20for%20Regional/LAUNCESTON-XTRA-INSIGHTS-PUBLIC-SURVEY-RESULT_1.pdf?ext=.pdf

In the demos, Chilli wins the under-55s, with ABC Northern Tasmania #1 in the 55+.

How long has LA FM bfast team been in place?

Bad result.

The high share of JJJ in Lonnie shows that the Cameron’s one log fits all music schedule is not working.

Local MD, local music research is needed.

Big drop in LA FM mornings.

The personal lead provided by Brian Carlton (Spoonman) has vanished.

The length of time to appoint a replacement and turnover of subsequent hosts is likely a factor. Losing Spoony by far the biggest influence.

Since the beginning of 2020.

It doesn’t help that Chilli & LAFM are both very musically similar to one another, similar arrangement to that of Bay & K-Rock in Geelong, 3BA & Power FM in Ballarat, and Hot 100 & Mix 104.9 in Darwin.
