The unreliable methodology of these phone recall straw polls results in wild swings. Power lost > 73% in the evening slot. Notoriously unreliable as we’ve seen with no data published in small markets.
Perhaps @HUFF has historical data on how long it’s been since Pricey wasn’t #1?
Pricey has been undermined the same way Sarah King & Paddy Gerrard were: by a wholly unsuitable music format. The Triple M franchise formerly known and loved as 4TO is not being programmed in the manner that ensured it remained at #1 when DMG was in the market as 4TO owner and Andy was based there.
Despite Andy Sichter being employed again for a role SCA foolishly made him redundant from, there’s no specific Townsville log that is based on any research investment for that market.
Here’s the Townsville (as well as Cairns, Mackay & Albury) radio ratings results from 2003, with results from the 2000 survey shown under the Last column:
As you can see, back when it was owned by DMG, 4TO used to dominate the Townsville market by a long way. In fact, Sea FM (later Zinc, now Power 100) was 2nd ahead of Hot FM in the 2003 survey.
The local ABC station was also rating much better than it does now.
EDIT: Just looking at the previous Townsville ratings over the last few years, in the 2016 survey, Pricey was beaten by Hot FM’s Cliffo & Loggy, in which they scored 22% to Pricey’s 21.1%. Despite that, 4TO (as it was still known at the time) still held the top spot in the overall ratings with 21.7%, with Hot FM not far behind at 21.1%.
A vintage Crankymedia survey response! Methodology is flawed when anything goes wrong non-SCA. And he goes missing when SCA does well overall! This guy.
Townsville has been surveyed 10 times going back to 1998, and not only is this the first time 102.3 has not been #1, it’s the first time it’s finished below a 20 share.
Mix FM remains at #1 with 17% (-1.4 from 2019), whilst Hot 91 took out the #2 spot with 13.5% (+1.9), followed closely by Sea FM with 13.2% (+3.2) & then JJJ with 11% (-2.5). ABC Sunshine Coast scored 6.8% (-0.8), whilst ABC Brisbane scored 4.4% (-0.6).
In the demos, Sea is #1 in the under-40s, with Mix dominating in the 40-64s. In the 65+, ABC Brisbane took out the top spot, outrating ABC Sunshine Coast.
In breakfast, Mix’s Mark & Caroline took out the top spot with 17.4%, followed by Sea’s BarRat & Heidi with 14.3% and Hot 91’s Sam & Ash with 12.9%. In drive, Mix’s Todd & Sami took out the top spot with 17.6%, followed by Hot 91’s Nugget & Al with 15.8%, and Sea’s Elly & Becks with 13.7%.
The “Other Stations” scored 28.5%, slightly down from 28.6% in 2019. Zinc 96 & the Brisbane stations are not listed, so would contribute towards the Other figure.
So we have a broadcast medium that doesn’t use near contemporaneous automated audience measurement and in smaller regional markets such as this, flaky, wildly fluctuating telephone recall surveys that now lack further transparency by removing Brisbane stations.
Radio is looking the dinosaur medium all the more by the day.
That’s bad enough. Analogue signals from Brisbane are well received within the licence area.
Brisbane signals serve the overlap (former Caboolture Shire portion of the Moreton Bay Regional Council) both in and out of home, whilst further north, in car reception is great in most areas of what’s now known as the Sunshine Coast Council. Noosa Shire less so, however many buildings have a band two antenna facing Brisbane. Digital via an external antenna also works.
Close to 34% of the population is licensed for both Brisbane RA1 and Sunshine Coast (Nambour RA1), yet their listening choices aren’t disclosed.
