Regional Radio Ratings

Must be doing a fair amount of calls around Pakenham you’d have to guess

ABC Melbourne is included so the other surrounding stations should have been included. They shouldn’t, and CRA shouldn’t allow them to, just cherry pick surrounding stations to suit their own purposes.

And the Warragul regionals are some of the worst.

They’re not in the survey as those paying for the survey call the tune. Simple. Another distorted survey.

It’s CRA that allow this, due to their members’ requests.

They create Boomtown to try to sell (rort) to agencies who woke up to this rubbish long ago yet wonder why they don’t get much success from that campaign.

Regionals need to stop operating surveys to attempt to fool inexperienced local businesses, the direct clients they’ve been milking for decades.

Today, it’s Geelong’s turn, its first since 2016: http://www.radioalive.com.au/RA/media/General/Documents/Surveys%20for%20Regional/GEELONG-XTRA-INSIGHTS-PUBLIC-SURVEY-RESULT.pdf?ext=.pdf

K Rock is the #1 station with 11.5% (+2.6 from 2016), followed by Bay 93.9 with 10.1% (+0.5) & ABC Radio Melbourne with 8% (-2.3). In the demos, K Rock is #1 in the under 55s, whilst ABC Radio Melbourne tops the 55+.

Unlike with Wollongong & Mandurah with its nearby metro stations, the Melbourne commercial stations are not listed in this survey. The “Other Stations” account for 62.2% of listeners surveyed, down from 63.4% in 2016.

Which suggests to me that some Melbourne commercial stations might be rating around 5-6%.

3AW must do well.

The other issue with this survey is that approximately 0 listeners in Werribee are going to chose the Geelong stations over Melbourne, so that would inflate the Melbourne stations somewhat (just as in the Warragul book)

From my observations, these numbers seem about right (after accounting for Werribee listeners who wont be listening to Geelong stations). A lot do listen to 3AW and Melbourne FM stations, we have Gold on at work. Also it doesnt look like K-Rock footy coverage rates that well, not much of a increase on weekends compared to weekdays.

Again, he who pays the piper…

It’s likely the calls are confined to Geelong and surrounds. They’ve long given up on Werribee.

Yet they claim it does and book a lot of clients in there. Again, selling on emotion to direct clients who don’t realise the mirage vs reality.

Their news on air and online often mentions Werribee but they don’t get any advertisers from there which shows that no one is listening there

With the results from the latest Warragul and Geelong regional radio audience measurement surveys (RRAMS) released last week, Xtra Insights has celebrated the 100th RRAMS to be released since the methodology was launched in 2014.

I’m not inclined to agree with that last comment - K-Rock Footy is one of the last bastions of value this station has. They always broadcast the Cats games each round, and given this book is from September it’s likely their listenership may be down as all the Melbourne football stations would be calling the same games due to it being finals. I’d suggest that they’d get quite a good audience during the season on weekends, particularly if they’re calling a Geelong game that 3AW/Triple M are not.

The rest of the survey indicates what I and other Geelong people have been saying for years, that Geelong people regard the Melbourne stations as their own and listen to them as such. They’ve been doing this since back in the AM days when 3XY was way cooler than the daggy 3GL, and nothing has changed. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the Melbourne stations was the highest rating of the lot, but we will never know

You can probably see the Melbourne CBD- certainly Mount Dandenong- from the hill that 3CAT is on (Murridoc Hill?) You can see the skyline from Portarlington on a clear day, as well as the Dandenongs in the distant east. So from the point of view of radio waves, which in no way respect geopolitical and geographical boundaries, Geelong and Melbourne are simply two focal points within the sizeable western lobe.

The Cats are, however, a Geelong entity through and through (and are often booed when they play at the ‘G, like Sydney). What is 3CAT without the cats?

I’ll answer my own rhetorical question: Wave FM.

Yes, great to see DAB measured against FM… much more meaningful than seeing DAB only results.

They should be doing the same with the metro surveys using the diary method.

First time they’ve topped the market since the March 2001 survey.

Townsville is next: http://www.radioalive.com.au/RA/media/General/Images/TOWNSVILLE-XTRA-INSIGHTS-PUBLIC-SURVEY-RESULT.pdf?ext=.pdf

In the demos, Hit is #1 in the under-40s, with Star at #2 (although JJJ is #2 in the 25-39s). In the 40-64s, Triple M is #1, with Power 100 at #2. In the 65+, ABC North Queensland is #1.

In breakfast, Pricey at Triple M is still #1 with 22.1%, but Hit’s Cliffo & Gabi closes in at 20%.

The “Other Stations” is at 12.9%, down 1.8% from last year.

Townsville is a very strange place. Probably the Hit network’s shining light at the moment.
