4.4% is incredibly low in a 2 station markets.
The Sunshine Coast stations are obviously out rating it.
So much for being a “local” station.

Speaking of the Sunshine Coast, they also had their radio ratings out today: http://www.radioalive.com.au/RA/media/General/Documents/Surveys%20for%20Regional/SUNSHINE-COAST-XTRA-INSIGHTS-PUBLIC-SURVEY-RESULT.pdf?ext=.pdf
Mix FM maintains its #1 position with 18.4%, up 0.9% from 2017, whilst JJJ takes the #2 position with 13.5%, thanks to a 2.4% increase. Hot 91 takes the #2 commercial position from Sea FM with 11.6%, thanks to a 1.7% increase, leaving the latter at 10%, down 3.1%. ABC Sunshine Coast scored a 7.6% share, with ABC Brisbane scoring a 5% share.
In the demographics, Hot 91 is #1 in the 10-17s, whilst JJJ wins the 18-39s, Mix wins the 40-64s & ABC Sunshine Coast wins in the 65+.
The “Other Stations” scored a 28.7% share, most of which would be towards Zinc, Community & Brisbane commercial stations. Unlike in previous surveys, the Brisbane commercial stations are not listed in this survey.
HUGE share for the Js.
God that’s a horrendous result for 4GY.
As Cranky said 4GY once had a huge profile even north in Maryborough.
Cairns has their ratings out today: http://www.radioalive.com.au/RA/media/General/Documents/Surveys%20for%20Major%20Regional/CAIRNS-XTRA-INSIGHTS-PUBLIC-SURVEY-RESULT.pdf?ext=.pdf
Star 102.7 takes the #1 spot off Hit 103.5, thanks to a 2.7% increase to 22.4%, whilst the latter fell 2.1% to 20.7%. Triple M had a slight fall, down 0.6% to 15.2%, followed by JJJ with 12.1% (-0.2) & ABC Far North with 11.2% (-1.3). 4CA remained steady at 7.2%.
In the demos, Hit still wins in the under-40s, whilst Star takes the top spot in the 40-54s from Triple M, and ABC Far North rules in the 55+.
Ronnie is clearly back in the big chair in Maroochydore, clocking up the FF points to get these stations up where they should be.
Again, these flimsy recall phone straw polls underestimate AM stations, 4CA’s morning program is what 4BC should be doing, John and his producer are a potent duo.
Today, it’s Mackay’s turn: http://www.radioalive.com.au/RA/media/General/Audio/Brand%20Campaign%20Audio/MACKAY-XTRA-INSIGHTS-PUBLIC-SURVEY-RESULT.pdf?ext=.pdf
The local Star station couldn’t replicate the success they had in Cairns, as Hit 100.3 maintains its #1 position with 23.1% (up 0.3), followed by Triple M with 17.5%, who fell 4.6% from last year. That being said though, Star had a 3.9% increase to 16.5%, putting themselves only 1% behind Triple M. ABC Tropical North had a 14.3% share (down 0.5), followed by 4MK with 9.1% (down 0.2) & JJJ with 8.2% (up 0.4).
In the demos, Hit is #1 in the under-40s, with Star outrating Triple M in the 10-17s & 25-39s. Triple M tops the 40-54s, whilst ABC Tropical North wins in the 55+.
I would love to see Star take the number one spot one day. The music on Star doesn’t seem to be as repetitive as Hit and Triple M.
That repetitive “Music That Makes You Feels Like Crap” music format isn’t doing any favours for Triple M in regional QLD is it.
It’s part of the reason why Star is doing well in Cairns & Mackay. Townsville is yet to be surveyed for this year, but last year, Star was only 4.4% behind Hit, whereas the year before, the gap was 9.3%.
Hot 91 on the Sunshine Coast, who carries the same log as Star & Hitz Bundaberg, is also doing quite well too, taking out #2 commercial ahead of EON-owned Sea FM.
It’s amazing to think that some of Grant-owned FM stations, particularly in QLD & Hobart, can compete quite effectively with the SCA stations, but when it comes to Wave FM in Wollongong, it gets smashed big time by WIN-owned i98FM. Then again, having a very similar music format to a much higher-rating competitor doesn’t help them.
Congrats to Grant Broadcasters and the Star Teams in Queensland…Number one next survey
The sad thing with Triple M is they have listen to their music consultant and they scared away most of their male listeners.
Star 96.5 for Wollongong maybe?
If you are a gold fish
They would have to change their positioning statement to “Today’s Best Music” to make it happen (which is not far off from Wave’s current positioner of “The Illawarra’s Best Music”). If that were to happen, i98FM would become seen as more of a ‘wide variety’ station.
It wouldn’t be the first time that a Grant station in NSW is associated with its QLD stations, when you consider that 2ST, 2EC & 2NM now carries the same music log as that of its QLD “Classic Hits” stations (Zinc 96, 4BU, 4CC, 4MK, 4CA).
Zinc 96.5 with the Classic Hit format that Zinc has.
Love the Zinc idea. It’d go well being by the beaches and be different to the rest of the offerings.
Another more realistic hypothetical scenario is for Wave FM to model itself more on River 94.9, which plays a wide variety of music that is older demographic friendly & provides a more clear point of difference to i98FM & the fortuitous signal of sister station Power FM from Nowra.
In last year’s Wollongong ratings, the only demographics where Wave FM outrate i98FM is in the 55-64s & 65+, so surely, it should make sense for them to go more older than they currently do, whether they model it more towards Zinc or River.
I always associated Zinc as a better fit for mining areas, but I can see the beach connection.
That’s correct however, I’m sure they’re keen on chasing a younger audience for clients.
There’s no point being #1 if you can’t sell at the best rate. 2GB, #1 by a long shot but Kiis & Smooth selling their air time at a much higher rate.
It’s probably why my idea of Nine acquiring MRN & SCA wouldn’t see them hold onto AW, convert to 105.1 and put 3MMM on digital only because MMM on a bad year may have a higher client value than AW (or close enough).
Today, we go over to WA, where the ratings have been released for Bunbury, its first since 2016:
http://www.radioalive.com.au/RA/media/General/Audio/Brand%20Campaign%20Audio/BUNBURY-XTRA-INSIGHTS-PUBLIC-SURVEY-RESULT.pdf?ext=.pdf
Hit (formerly Hot FM) maintains its #1 position, despite falling 3.6% to 27.2%, followed by JJJ with 18.3% (+4.3) & ABC South West at 16.3% (-1.2). AM station Triple M (formerly Radiowest) scored a 12.1% share (-1.3). Interestingly, Spirit Radio is not listed in this survey, even though its a local commercial station!
In the demos, Hit is #1 in the under-55s, whilst ABC South West is #1 in the 55+.
The “Other Stations” account for 21% (up 0.7% from 2016) of listeners surveyed, which would include the Community stations such as Bunbury Community Radio 103.7 & Collie Community Radio 101.3, as well as Spirit Radio 621, and the Mandurah stations The Wave & Coast FM.
Oh my. Spirit must have had an awful book - if they had a 6% share in 2016, but the Other Stations only rose 0.7% with its inclusion
