I think Nine could be tempted to revert back to the 1 hour NBN format for regional news if they buy WIN. It would then give them consistency across their 4 O&O regional licence areas.
I agree. The regional stations would become Nine, I think.
WIN also owns 50% of 105.3 FM Kix Country Wollongong, so that interest would probably be sold to co-owner Grant Broadcasters I’m guessing, who may also be interested in C91.3.
I’m guessing that Nine may try to sell the joint venture television stations.
That’s a masterstroke if he can pull it off. WIN’s current business model is unsustainable for the future media landscape and if he can get away with what he’s proposing it’s an excellent way out
You’d hope if they lower the price enough that SCA would take back NRN (would have to be a substantial discount) but who knows they probably wouldn’t go for that
It’s not like there’s any other obvious buyers. The only alternative would be a buyer not already involved in TV
SCA would have little to gain from buying it unless they got a very good price.
Now that seems even more unlikely. Owning a single regional TV license is economically unviable these days (even moreso for a Ten affiliate).
Would Seven be interested in acquiring one of the northern NSW licences in order to extend their reach across north eastern Australia? They already have the presence in regional Queensland and neighbouring Northern NSW is a heavily a populated area the regional broadcasters make a good deal of their revenue from.
Given seven’s current financial position I’m unsure if they’d be interested in a single regional TV licence either (there’s a stronger case to be made for a Prime merger which would include a NNSW licence).
If seven bought NRN they’d theoretically have to broadcast Ten programming in the area until their agreement with Prime expired.
Alternatively maybe channel Ten themselves could take over NRN
Would anyone be able to paste the text? I’m hitting a paywall.
We’re not permitted to reproduce paywalled articles on this site. Give it a couple of hours and TV Tonight, Daily Mail or TV Blackbox could have a report with essentially the same information.
I wonder if Nine would force WIN to bring back the nine dots to the logo.
No dramas, thanks for the heads up.
As for the news itself…I’ve been a long-term doubter that there would be an affiliation switch at all, but this has officially piqued my interest. What’s going to happen if Nine & Bruce can’t get the permissions to get the sale through? Or it takes longer than July to get the sale to happen?
It’s going to be a very interesting few months.
A monthly rolling contract can come into effect (WIN with 10 and 9 with SCA). That or a ‘back-up’ deal (i.e. a normal affiliation deal that becomes obsolete if the sale goes through).
I can’t see Nine and WIN Doing an affiliate deal.
I can see WIN selling the entire business out to Nine.
But does Nine want to buy? That is the question.
I can see them being interested
If it makes sense to their future model - not sure
Stan will be worth more than Nine In 5 years. Not sure if owning more TV licenses fits into their digital growth and content first strategy
Does it allow them to save money in the long term by buying now? Or make money?
TV stations are declining in value fast. Every year they are worth less and less
It wouldn’t think it would fit into the digital growth strategy. However it will give the company full national exposure that no other has.
As long as they maintain their existing local news coverage I don’t see anything bad about this.
