Ratings: Sunrise edges out Today but Nine scores best Thursday result of 2016

Seven’s Sunrise won the 7am - 9am ratings battle yesterday after pulling 317,000 viewers to just beat Nine’s Today where 314,000 were watching.

It was a narrow victory but was the second in a row this week as the previously dominant breakfast show has struggled to regain the lead in the competitive timeslot.

In primetime, however, Nine recorded its best Thursday share of the year with good results from news, The AFL Foot Show and Thursday Night NRL. The network’s four channels together averaged 31.3% ahead of Seven that slipped to 25.0%, an improved Ten on 18.5% plus ABC (18.0%) and SBS (7.2%).

Nine’s night got off to a good start with Nine News (940,000 and 913,000) recording a rare win while A Current Affair averaged 650,000 in four cities. The Footy Show had 499,000 in AFL territory and the NRL drew an audience of 442,000 (plus 53,000 on 9Gem). Nine abandoned their creative coding for its afternoon game show seen yesterday and it was back to just one entry for Hot Seat with 526,000.

Seven News (852,000 and 832,000) was Seven’s best with Home and Away the night’s top entertainment title with 634,000. The Chase had 524,000 and 355,000 in the afternoon while later Great Gardens of the World had just 396,000 and the movie Bad Teacher 243,000.

Meanwhile on Ten, Bondi Rescue made the top ten with a season high 576,000, up from 458,000 the previous week. The Project was next best on 565,000 and 400,000 while Family Feud scored with 537,000 fans tuning in. Territory Cops was up 93,000 this week to 519,000 with Law and Order later on 490,000 and 421,000. Ten Eyewitness News earlier averaged 426,000.

ABC News (787,000) and 7.30 (619,000) were ABC’s best with Janet King steady on 613,000. Hatch, Match and Dispatch improved slightly to 496,000 while No Offence had 294,000 and Antiques Roadshow 270,000.

The premiere of Inside Heston’s World disappointed with 250,000 watching on SBS with Destination Flavour Scandinavia next best on 182,000.

In the battle of US reality shows Survivor had 154,000 on 9GO! and The Amazing Race 48,000 on 7Flix.

Also at breakfast ABC News Breakfast had 80,000 and 47,000. Later were The Morning Show (140,000), Today Extra (132,000) and Studio 10 (77,000).
