that was in November. After the end of the survey.

No it wasn’t … some areas didn’t get SBS until 1996 or even later.

Edit: Lismore Dec 1993 TV Guide example …no SBS programs listed.

I lived in Lismore until 1995 AND we most certainly did have SBS.

Also my parents had a holiday house near Tamworth AND the house also received SBS - I actually watched Say Aah in December 1992 at 7pm after Dateline ended for the year.

Sorry to prove you wrong

This TV guide shows Sale Of The Century. Someone claimed Sale Of The Century was on at 11:30am in Northern NSW when I queried the Central Coast TV Guide saying it screened at 11:30 weekdays

that may not be entirely correct. According to SBS’ annual report for 1992-93, the only TV transmitters in NSW were:

And 1993-94:

I posted a Newcastle TV Guide last month that listed Sale Of The Century at 11.30 in February 1993.

NBN moved ‘Sale’ to the 5.30pm timeslot in September.

(Early Sept ‘93 on left, late ‘Sept 93 on the right - from the ‘Sydney Morning Herald’).

I think the claim about Prime either

1 - Excluded NBN OR

2 - Referred to the North West region only (excluding all other areas but failing to disclose) OR

3 - Referred to a selected timeslots in those timeframes (eg at that stage 5pm to 6pm Prime may have been winning)

SBS certainly wasn’t available inland in 1993 - we didn’t get it in Tamworth until after 1998 (it started on Mt Dowe during 97/98, we couldn’t get it where we were)

At least 1998 would have been a good time to get it, providing it was on by mid-year, as SBS showed the France 98 world cup from memory. What was done with those types of big ticket events in areas that didn’t have SBS? Did they just miss out?

Shepperton was the last regional area to receive SBS in November 2001.

We missed out

I have vague recollections it wasn’t live for France 98 (I watched the final while I was in Dubbo for something else)

I do recall Prime airing SBS’s coverage World Cup 94.

SBS should’ve been rolled out during aggregation. But that’s for another thread.

Yes, that was a common misconception among regional viewers that aggregation meant the inclusion of SBS. I do recall reading a couple of newspaper articles to that effect.

Did the SBS roll-out in regional areas have any rhyme or reason to it? Did they target larger markets or areas with larger migrant populations first?

I’m guessing not the latter if Shep was the last to get it, a fruit growing area that has been home to great numbers of newer arrivals in Australia looking for work for many decades.

A lot of the early ones were done as self-help transmitters - so I guess they were locations where there was interest (and maybe some funding)

True. If you wanted to receive SBS there beforehand you needed a 2nd UHF antenna to receive SBS-29 from Mount Alexander. My parents did that, so did quite a few others in the town and region. Thank Paul Keating for that!

Yes, this ‘Manning River Times’ article from November 1991 shows one option that the Taree-Port Macquarie residents were looking at to bring SBS to the area..

I’m not sure how such a ‘subscription’ model would work.. would they have needed to encrypt the signal to prevent non paying residents from watching?

I think most councils generally funded an SBS self help service otherwise.

My parents thought I was a bit weird for liking quiz shows when I was in primary school, so I feel a bit better after reading this article! (from SMH, Feb 18 1982).

(nb. exactly what this has to do with political parties, I’m not sure!)

Reminds me of the hilarious situation in Swan Hill circa 1988. Local council installed a self-help SBS transmitter in town on the local water tower.

ABT weren’t impressed and quickly shut it down. After some negotiation it was restarted and for several years was allowed to operate before and after aggregation. That meant a separate antennas for SBS and the high-powered Goschen broadcasts for ABC, SCN, Prime and Vic TV.

SBS-44 from Goschen commenced in the late-1990s iirc.
