Not necessarily. 7 launched The Morning Show up against Mornings with Kerri-Anne on 9 and 9am with David and Kim on 10. Would have really depended on how the ratings were going.
The Morning Show benefited from Sunrise as a lead in. If Sunrise wasn’t there as a big lead in, it might be a different story.
Probably for the worse. That means no Cheez TV which from all accounts was a massive success.
Channel 7 would had aired Pokemon, Yugioh and DBZ instead if GMA stayed on at Breakfast. Maybe Cartoon Connection or the Big Breakfast would have lasted into at least the mid 2010s.
I think part of GMA success was Kerri Annes energy. Once she left the show, it went down hill. Mike Hammond seemed too much like a cardboard cutout. If only they had someone like Jessica Rowe back then to lighten the morning mood. Anyone remember Basia? She also added good energies to the show, then Karen Moregolds “Your day by the stars” - she dived straight in “Good Morning, Aries…”
It’s a horrible thought as a huge Pokemon fan that there’s the potential universe where it’s Cartoon Network exclusive or something, I never watch the show and end up not liking the franchise as much. So I’m really glad Ten axed the breakfast GMA…
I assume the mania surrounding Pokemon means one of the networks would probably have picked it up, even if just for a Saturday morning slot, but for me none of those were appointment viewing TV, unlike the Cheez TV in the mornings before school.
That clip looks like the final show so Sandra and Ron were there at the end on 18 December 1992. We saw in the clip that Sandra and Mike Hammond had also hosted together. From the clip posted earlier, there was at least one episode where Mike was hosting on his own on 2 April 1992 with presenters James Valentine on Entertainment, Susan St. John doing weather and Tim Bailey, the roving reporter.
Piecing it all together. This is a cast photo from the first day 23 February 1981. Front row Di Morrissey (left) Sue Kellaway (right). Back row (left to right) Buzz Kennedy, Tim Webster, Gordon Elliott, Ken Brown.
A billboard featuring the cast:
Kerri-Anne Kennerley, then Kerri-Anne Wright, replaced Sue. Later cast shot. Front row (left to right) Ken Brown, Kerri-Anne, Gordon Elliott, Ron Wilson. Back row (left to right) Laurie Oakes, Di Morrissey, Buzz Kennedy, Karen Moregold.
This was a visit to Luna Park, Gordon Elliott, Kerri-Anne, Di Morrissey and Ron Wilson featured.
Does anyone know how the ratings went against The Today Show?
Some great photos from that era. I especially like the billboard.
Interesting little trivia from that era was that showbiz reporter Peter Ford was a producer for the first two years with Gordon and Kerri-Anne. One of his first jobs in the TV industry (and starting a long association with morning television, to this day).
I don’t know but i seem to recall both were getting thrashed by cartoons on Seven
Really? Seven did introduce the short lived TVAM in 1989.
May 1988. Ended in Nov 1989.
In January '89, Ten introduced Til Ten which ran until December '91.
Which was a lovely little show, with a nice slick penthouse set and Joan McInnes was a charming host. Of course, 10 went onto much success with the Bert years after Til Ten, but I do remember it fondly.
I’m referring to the earlier years of the two shows being up against each other and likely split the news audience between them. Seven had the kids/cartoon market to themselves. And GMA/Today were breaking into a new market some years after any former attempts in that space.
TVAM didn’t start until 7 years after GMA v Today started. And TVAM was only 6-7.30am. They still had cartoons etc from 7.30 and TVAM was short lived.
What was on the ABC at Breakfast time? I’m assuming pre-school programming?
Pretty much. Early/breakfast news and Open Learning on ABC didn’t start until the 90s.
8am sign on and then Sesame Street for much of the 70s to the mid 80s.
