Also what was the story with Channel 7’s rebranding in the late 80s for a few years as the “Australia Television Network”? Was it trying to be like an Australian version of the USA Network or something?

Ask Mr Skase, it was his idea (as far as I know).

Probably just some marketing consultant thought it was a good idea.

But i wonder if it was somehow tied up with the onset of aggregation where the network comprised of different identities. E.g. Seven, Prime, Sunshine, etc. And it would have allowed a single name for the network.

Well that’s a possibility

Then Mr Shanks tried to rebrand Ten to 10 TV Australia, supposedly with long term plan to remove the “10” component. Only that plan fell apart when another company which owned the name “TV Australia” threatened to sue, so Ten had to remove it from its branding.

A sketch from one of the D-Generation specials from 1988

And a “blooper” from Jennifer Keyte

I’ve remembered these very well even though it’s 30 years since seeing them :stuck_out_tongue:

The funniest part about this is that all these years later this is still very relevant. lol.

Yeah indeed but don’t most journos just put their mobile phones on the desk these days at media conferences?

Yes, the ATN brand was a combination of Seven and Prime as a “national” brand with aggregation.

Just a random thought, but are any of the Australian TV networks going to air any sort of tribute to Lex Marinos (aka The Wog/Bruno Bertilluci from Kingswood Country).

It would be good to see even say a 2 hour block of Kingwood Country followed by the Where Are They Now which featured the entire cast of Kingswood Country. I know it’s been about 8 years since Ted Bullpitt/Grumblebum passed, but it would be a nice tribute

mic flags still make appearances at press conferences though their number has diminished in recent years.

Aussie TV legend Reg Grundy honoured

A who’s who of local television have attended the memorial for TV great Reg Grundy

Six years after his death, Australian television great Reg Grundy has been remembered in a joint memorial for his late wife, Joy Chambers-Grundy.

It was a who’s who of Australian television that turned up to the memorial at the State Library of NSW, from presenters to actors of some of our biggest shows since television began.

The service itself was kept short, presided over by British Anglican Bishop Stephen Oliver, who flew into Sydney for the memorial. He helped the couple renew their vows five times over their 53-year marriage.

Neighbours star Stefan Dennis performed Their Way while graduates from the National Institute of Dramatic Art sang a medley of theme songs for Grundy shows, Neighbours, Sons and Daughters and Prisoner.

And actor Peter Mochrie was joined by fellow original Restless Years cast members to sing that show’s theme song.

I think the Seven Network should be renamed “Australian Television Network” because it is a name that accurately reflects their business. For example Seven has a strong commitment to Australian made programming.

You can’t just rename networks in Australia. They’ve tried a few times and it never worked.

The brands of 7,9 and 10 are strong enough to continue as they are.

And also there’s this triangular one, which was only seen in credit notices (versus the *\ one in movie intros and credits)?

The line below sounded like when Bruce Gyngll tried to do the opposite and brought channel numbers to UK…

It was also used in a 2001 ID.

Looks like they were trying to redesign the Aussie flag.
