Random TV History

That happened A LOT on the ABC in regional eastern states whenever the Test cricket was being played in Perth back in the 1980s.

At least a few times a day, and would last for 3-5 minutes each

Anything to do Sun Outage or would that not be a factor?

I’m guessing it was the delivery method, as I don’t recall seeing the same issue on the ODIs from Perth on Nine.

By 1991 ABC would have been using Aussat. I would have thought that to be a robust connection. Maybe someone kicked a plug out

This was back in the 80s, the Test cricket moved from the ABC to the commercial networks at the end of 1991.

I was referring to the original video posted from 1991. But either way, Aussat launched in 1985, ABC should hopefully have been using that for its test cricket coverage over the following years.

Last night 7 News Adelaide Flashback did a story on national talent show Pot Luck

https://x.com/7NewsAdelaide/status/1792137972198027415

It was broadcasted from the old SAS studios (Back when it was 10), and the performers were selected at random from the audience. It also was a 5 days a week daytime show. AFAIK didn’t last for more than a year (By the end of 87 SAS10 became SAS7). Also featured Ernie Sigley hosting, as well as judges Bernard King, and Anne ‘Wilsy’ Wills (Who still holds the record for most individual logies).

The acts from Pot Luck became infamous when featured as “toilet breaks” on The Late Show in the early 1990s - although in some cases they had to rely on home VCR recordings as even Grundys no longer had master copies of some episodes.

One of The Late Show’s favourites was Piffy the bell ringer (a.k.a. Remi Broadway, whose dad was a comic performer and mum Christine was a model, actress and weather presenter in Melbourne)

I wonder if SAS had the original tapes somewhere. Apparently all of their tapes got sent to BTQ a few years ago for digitisation (Including presumably local programs that were made when it was SAS10). Wonder if that is where Seven got it’s footage from for the report.

Pre-10 TV Australia logos?

I think they are concept logos. There is a shot of someone doing a digital drawing.

there was a series of those teasers, another one had someone shuffling manila folders with words like “drama!”, “variety!”, etc, scrawled on them. Because I am sure that’s how the planning process works for making new shows, just shift a lot of empty manila folders around… looking busy.

Eventually those teasers made way for the ones featuring Channel Ten personalities gasping “Oh wow!” “oh it’s so great…” ho ho ho, blah blah blah, accompanied by images of the “X” logo being painted over and stripped off walls.

For reference these are all from 24 June 1989.

I think that one is “variety” (opened with a shot of a piano):

I also now have another version (Drama?) featuring more concept graphics and E-Street:
