91.5 since it’s inception.

I can remember holidaying at Airlie Beach in August 1985 as I think 4MK 91.5 had just started on air as there was an article in the local paper about it.

Apparently some residents were either getting good MVQ-6 reception OR getting good 91.5 reception but not both. Not sure what they did to fix it since 91.5 is still there, maybe UHF TV translators in later years were part of the solution.

Probably the most remarkable thing for me was 91.5 being “true” FM stereo, as I remember hearing some Top 40 songs on it and how rare that was outside of a capital city back then.

The other interesting thing about 4MK is that “technically” they should have moved to 90.7 when they moved back to the AM band about 5 years ago. As the ACMA allocated 91.5 as the Airlie Beach repeater for 101.9 (since 4MK was on 101.9 at that time) and 90.7 as the repeater for 1026 (which was then 4AA).

But obviously the owners of 4MK and Star 101.9 elected not to switch them over. Not sure if they did, or had to, get ACMA approval to do that or not.

I recall listening to 4MK at night from Maryborough in '85 and hearing them mention the FM service on the sweepers. I thought it was out of this world that a regional station had an FM repeater at that time.

Just listening to Dr Karl on triple j and heard this caller say that he went to the Rainbow Festival and got addicted to something (I forgot what it was) and wanted to start a business where he would incubate eggs under his armpit while dancing :thinking::thinking:

I’m still trying to understand this…

Kyle Sandilands rang i98 FM in Wollongong this morning because he was explaining how they rejected him for a job there many years ago. He spoke to the receptionist who put him through to Andrew Gordon. He then left a message on his voicemail. It was very funny! :joy::joy::joy:

Today 4RO from Rockhampton, this station is also a classic hits format,They also had the “20/20 Retro Countdown from 1-3pm ,following an hour of Alan Jones from 12-1pm ,same as 4 MK. I could only listen to Alan Jones very briefly before I became annoyed, don’t understand how come he’s so popular

I did a Google search and found out both 4MK and 4RO are owned by Grant Broadcasters.Do they mainly own stations in regional markets only?

Generally yes. The company also owns River 94.9, as well as Zinc 96.1, Wave FM, 2ST, 7HO & Bay 93.9, among many others. 4CA, Power 100 & Star in NQ are also owned by them.

Drugs are bad…

No I didn’t,I was listening on 990am frequency

Actually 91.5 is the translator for 1026am not the other way around.

But 91.5 was also the translator for 4MK FM when it was on 101.9.
But now Star 101.9 is using 90.7 in Airlie Beach.

So one way or another, they aren’t lined up correctly.

For funniest radio I have heard I use to enjoy bass and pillow. Here is sample. It was a prank call.

It may have been mucked up back when 4MK was on FM. But I grew up listening to 4MK on 91.5 before any of the FM licences had been issued
