Random Radio

I was also informed of this by a passive aggressive DM from @crankymedia who decided it was better to personally harass me than contribute to the discussion. Cranky claims that 95.5 is now broadcasting from the Toowoomba studios, which would explain the poor coverage, despite still being licensed at Mt Kynoch.

I found the following post about Mount Kynoch being demolished. Maybe @gordo92 is now able to give us an update.

Looking at Nearmap, the tower at Mt Kynoch (that I presume 95.5 used to come from) disappeared sometime in 2023. The coverage outside of Toowoomba dropped off significantly prior to that time - it used to come in quite well in parts of Brisbane with RDS (when active), now it’s almost non-existent.

Would be somewhat ironic if they were TXing on 95.5 from the Toowoomba studios, given the sign out the front still seems to tell you to tune into the defunct 1359 AM frequency

No chance for me to get 95.5 as TAB Bundaberg now dominates with RDS sometimes.

Tyrepower Morningside still has their radio on 4BH,on an analogue radio too.I noticed the other day when I took my Mazda to them for a wheel alignment/balance.
I’ve taken my cars to them over the years for tyre servicing or for new tyres, they used to listen to 4KQ when they were still around.

Yep I was there in January and noticed that too. She’s lovely the lady that runs the show there. I almost suggested to her she needs to upgrade to DAB

“DAB? What’s that? My radio says 1116… I thought that meant I already had a digital radio”.

Australian music should be played when people are actually listening

The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) and the Phonographic Performance Company of Australia (PPCA) have welcomed public consultation on Commercial Radio and Audio’s (CRA) draft Code of Practice (The Code) , saying it provides opportunity to Australian radio audiences to have a chance to connect with local music.

Locally, SONFM88 seems to have moved away from the Dancewave format in the other half of their broadcast hours, instead playing an assortment of community related programming. It seems quite random from their normally religious broadcasting, though Dancewave was about as far away as one could get from that.

How can a song reach the top 10 of the ARIA chart - eg. Lorde’s new single “What Was That” - and receive hardly any radio spins (at least according to the logs I’ve looked at)?

Probably off the back of social media?

Also maybe similar to when a new Ed Sheeran album comes out, most of those songs are in the Top 20, but only two or three of those will get airplay.

Good question. Is radio slow? Or is this just a case of the fans having waited four years and rushing the streaming services as soon as the track dropped?

Or is it because it’s a hit before it hits! Or maybe the other way 'round  Whichever way, 2Day’s been playing it, and making a big thing of the fact you’ll hear it there before KIIS or Nova.

Triple J’s played it four times in the past 24 hours (Lava spin id:233843197).

Played twice tonight on ZM and five times on the Edge - needless to say she’s debuted at number 1 on the Aotearoa Tukutahi Tiketike 40 Ōkawa.

The idea that a song can chart without radio airplay sometimes happens with tracks from existing artists with sizeable fanbases. For example, it happened to Michael Jackson in 1995 with ‘You are not alone’ and Adele ‘Easy on me’ in 2021. Both not particularly ‘radio friendly’ songs (too slow), but incredibly popular with the fans - so debuted at #1 despite no airplay.

I’ve heard it on triple j a few times (as @1323ZM points out) but yeah a bit weird that the radio stations haven’t picked it up.

Surely a renowned (semi-)local performer releasing her first new music after many years would warrant at least a play or two? I know Aus radio likes to play it ultra safe on the music front, but isn’t that about as safe as it gets for new music?

Aussie commercial Radio wouldn’t know good music if they tried
Always the same songs flogged over and over again

That’s why I tend to stream More FM out of NZ a lot of the time these days

Tho I must say I did enjoy the Triple M Election Countdown, good to hear a lot more classic hits and Rock on Triple M Regionals for once

I guess you could say that radio used to ‘make the hits’ - now streaming and social media do, and radio merely reflects what is already proven and popular.

Do you think an AM pop music station would do okay nowadays? I think that the next radio station for Melbourne should be on AM due to available space on the frequency band, but it should appeal to younger demographic, as otherwise AM might only last another 2-3 decades at best.

No.

Yes.

In the same way people prefer vinyl to CD and digital recordings.

We are only talking about pop music after all, and we are only suggesting the station will do ‘okay’.

In Brisbane we’ve got Switch on 1197. Now if it flipped to K-POP tomorrow it would do okay. Lots of Korean students who would happily listen on AM while at home studying, doing housework and drinking Soju.

When it comes to pop, sound quality is not all that important.

I reckon if we were to convert 4BH to a pop station it would do okay.

Playing Brisbane’s best pop (from the 60s till now). If done well, concentrating on that intergenerational ‘pop’ that seems to go so good at weddings, parties and any sporting event these days.

AM is the home of pop. Whereas, in Australia, FM was the home of rock.
