That’s a possibility, but it’s a bit hard to say you’re 2 separate independent companies when you’re in the same studios & probably sharing infrastructure, that’s a big risk for ACMA to say you’re breaking the 2 station control per market rules.
2CH did it for a while with 2GB & 2UE, but that was a limited time thing agreed to by all parties & ACMA, while new studios were built for 2CH (SEN).
True but I just can’t see ACMA taking them on. ACMA is great at bullying small community stations and narrowcasters when they step out of line, but I doubt they’ve got the will to take on ARN/ACP’s team of lawyers. ACMA is a prime example of a regulator that has been “captured” by the industry it’s supposed to regulate. Having said that I’m not a fan of the 2 station rule anyway in the first place.
Yesterday I was working in the RSPCA laundry room and a young girl about 30 (she must be a new volunteer there as I hadn’t met her before)was there with me for a while. She had changed the station on the radio in there to NOVA👎 ,I remembered exactly why I hated listening to most commercial FM stations ,too many ads ,crappy music,as soon as she left I changed it back to 4BH .
The 2 guys who volunteer there during the week are my age or older so they always listen to them too
Yes, mains fail in the area & something else happened at the Gore Hill site (I’m not aware of), ABC TV was off for a short period & SBS TV was off for about 15 minutes, transmitters couldn’t change to Artarmon site for reasons unknown to me.
I finally got around to comparing the lag between FM (where applicable), DAB and the on line streams of various Sydney stations today.
Some interesting results…
101.7 WSFM
DAB - 12 seconds behind FM 101.7
Stream - 19 seconds behind DAB
Stream - 31 seconds behind FM
104.9 Triple M
DAB - 16 seconds behind FM 104.9
Stream - 45 seconds behind DAB
Stream - 61 seconds behind FM
95.3 Smooth FM
DAB - 18 seconds behind FM
Stream & DAB are almost in sync
Stream - 19 seconds behind FM
ABC Sydney
DAB - 2 seconds behind 92.5 (my PC causes all sorts of hash on AM, so used the 92.5 Central Coast relay which I think is pretty close to being in sync to 702 anyway)
Stream - 42 seconds behind DAB
Stream - 44 seconds behind AM/FM
2GB
Stream - about 5 seconds behind DAB
(couldn’t compare lag from 873 similar to ABC 702 issue above)
2SM
Stream - about 12 seconds behind DAB
ARN / WSFM 80s
Stream - about 54 seconds behind DAB
Steve Adler and Tim English leading RF and IT at DMG/Nova when digital radio began did a fantastic effort of reducing the lag to under two seconds of analogue broadcast.
There’s all the more reason 14 years on in 2023 to maintain and improve on their great effort.
Anything is better than what they are doing now. Would the Power 100 log be to close to 2ST?
As soon as they get Power fm off the Wave fm log will help the ratings of both Wave and Power fm. In the Illawarra region if you don’t like the music on Wave / Power fm and you want to listen to a local music station than it is I98.
Power 100 Townsville runs a pure rock or ‘active rock’ format, which focuses mainly on rock hits from the 90s onwards. I think they play a sprinkling of classic rock as well. It’s a great listen and as you say, far, far superior to the generic Hot AC format that they run now. Power 94.9 is good enough to listen to from Bungendore to Braidwood- at least from the Great Dividing Range on- and comes in OK with the Yagi down in the desert.
