Though for an announcer to read that properly on air without speaking too quickly would probably take 30 seconds to 1 min.
Currently 2SM & SEN both have the same sports show on. In my view on AM radio 2SM sounds much better. More of a deeper sound.
Irish broadcaster RTE will cease transmission of its radio services on DAB on March 31.
Give it 5-10 years and it wouldnât overly surprise me if weâre seeing articles like that one from the ABC and other major Australian broadcasters.
I hope not.
The ABC/SBS absolutely should push back against unfunded expansion of their Digital Radio broadcasts.
Most would vastly prefer the cash be spent on improving the amount of local/state programming on ABC Local Radio than to expand niche digital services.
Ideally money wouldnât be a problem and they could use both - and use DAB services as a training ground for new announcers in an era where thereâs far too few opportunities with the amount of regional radio consolidation - but with tight money, itâs hard to justify the broadcast cost, especially of an expanded footprint.
My favourite use to be KROQ.
â106.7 KROQ FM Pasadena Los Angeles, LA and the OCâs only new rock. The world famous KROQ â
Loved listening to it in transit at LAX on my Walkman in the early 00âs. Mind you didnât seem to have the best signal with building interference.
Unfortunately being part of Entercom (former CBS radio) they havenât streamed either for a number of years outside US.
I think there will be some consolidation of digital stations by commercial broadcasters in the five biggest cities, however there is still scope to expand into Canberra, Darwin, Hobart as well as rural and regional areas.
With the Entercom news and talk stations you can get around the stream block by playing with the rewind/ fast forward controls that come up when you click Listen (I generally just click the âback 15 secondsâ button and press play) - unfortunately doesnât work with the music stations.
I was doing some reading of the License Area Plan - Sydney Radio (2017) and I noticed that there are two frequencies listed that are not currently allocated:
| Community | 783 kHz | Sydney |
And
| Open Narrowcasting | 1386 kHz | Penrith |
The 1386 is what I assume was the reallocated license for Cool Country 2KA, But who owns it now? and 783 in Sydney? from memory nothing was allocated to that frequency, Is it an available Community radio spot?
783 was the old 2KA Katoomba Frequency that to my memory has not been used since 1990 when the station converted to FM as 2ONE (Now The Edge 96.1)
And 1386 was originally 2EA - the âvoice of Ethnic Australiaâ - original SBS radio.
It was actually October 1992 when the AM-FM conversion of 2KA to One FM occurred.
2EA was on 801 in the early 80s as well, itâs been shuffled all over the dial since 9khz spacing was introduced.
800 (later 801) was the original frequency for 2EA when it first went to air in 1975. It moved to 1386 in 1980, and then to 1107 in January 1995.
was there something problematic about 1386, because in Adelaide 5AA made the move from 1386 to 1395. What was wrong with 1386? Some sort of no-go zone now?
I wonder what has been going on with 2LT / Move fm at Wentworth Falls. They have been off air for quite some time this evening (transmitter down) The Edge 96.1 was not affected.
They are now back on air, there has been some storms in the area, but no near lightning strikes to the tower according to my mobile lightning tracker app.
Maybe it was scheduled maintenance as Mid West Radio donât normally fix storm outages this quickly. I just wish they would fixed the bit rates of these stations, they have sounded dreadful since they first went to air.
Apparently, 5AA had to move when 3EE Melbourne launched on 693 (because 2 x 693 = 1386) because of 2nd harmonic interference.
Doesnât make sense to me, but that was apparently why.
@RFBurns @4TAB-1008kHz and other techs may like to comment?
Were you chatting in this thread about sign on/offs?
Turn your SW receiver to SSB and tune into the BoM freqs.
They have sign on and off, mention callsigns, frequencies, including the other site in WA:
http://www.bom.gov.au/marine/radio-sat/voice-services.shtml
http://www.bom.gov.au/marine/radio-sat/broadcast-areas-map.shtml
ERP I think is a maximum of 1kW, so good luck for a clean signal, often more static than program. BoM need to invest more in better coverage.
Kordia operate for the BoM.
