Thanks, I thought it was NBN related.
The storms must have been pretty bad in the mountains.
We had heavy rain in NW Sydney but not much lightning.
I wonder how long NBN / Telstra will take to fix it?
The ADSL / NBN STL has been very problematic for them, and has been fried on a few occasions when the Wentworth Falls tower has been struck by lightning. If only they could get a microwave STL, or off air reception from 107.9, all unfortunately not possible.
ACMA has opened consultation for a change to specification of periods broadcasting instrument, in which they set out annual 5-week periods when regional commercial radio licences are exempt from local content rules.
They use an Optus 4G backup STL, not Telstra.
If thereās big issues at Lithgow related to the studios, they mightnāt be able to get the 4G backup data out of there, the 4G would look at the same network address as the NBN link Iād imagine?
Even if itās a dual redundant link out of the studio, unless itās 4G too & all the towers around Lithgow are working, it isnāt going to be much help at the TX site.
Itās also possible that the TX site is still seeing a working NBN connection, just with no data on it, so the router wonāt switchover to 4G.
2OOO FM at Artarmon had a similar issue last week, working fibre connection with no data on it, & the router wouldnāt switchover to 4G backup, because it didnāt see a problem.
Whilst listening to Gosfordās Coast FM community radio today, they introduced Whitesnakeās āHere I Go Againā as the āGiraffe songāā¦ youād rarely hear any radio station make a reference to anotherās TV ad.
Sorry to just pop up like this and start spruiking my own stuff, but I thought this might be a good conversation starter.
In the latest ep of my podcast The Aus Media Report I have a chat with Jake Challenor from Radio Today about the state of radio in 2020. He offers some thoughts on radio post-Alan Jones, the revamp of 4BC, the threat of services like Spotify on radio, and more.
Perth was meant to be the āguinea pigā for an FM restack, and thereās been no movement there yet.
But yes, Iāve never seen a discussion paper from ACMA that proposes to change the antenna height and pretty much nothing else (as far as Brisbane is concerned).
If thatās all it is, you could be forgiven for thinking that if you wanted to paint the tower a different colour, theyād release a discussion paper for that too!
The cynic in me canāt help thinking this is some kind of incentive/payoff for the operators regarding the DAB overspill issue between the Gold Coast and Brisbane. The Brisbane FMs get more coverage into the Gold Coast so they will accept a bit of DAB overspill into Brisbane.
I was really expecting something in there to improve the four commercial AM stationsā reception, which is really deteriorating with electrical interference. Perhaps the AM operators will respond to the consultation?
Also in the age of streaming are they really that obsessed with a bit of overspill? It seems they are.
I did notice last time I was on the Gold Coast in 2018, Nova and 97.3 seemed a bit stronger than MMM and B105. Which makes a mockery of those supposed antenna height figures, which had B105 as the highest.
I find that 97.3 is the strongest commercial signal out of Cane Toad City towards the south, excluding River 949. Family FM and 4AAA are also right up there. B105 is probably the hardest to receive in places like Sawtell and Woolgoolga.
Me personally I found they all drop out at the hill just before the Nerang River heading south and at the Cooroy exit heading north. I find nothing reaches further. In ordinary conditions anyway.
