Random Radio

You won’t ever hear Stairway on my show. ‘Free Bird’ on the other hand may get a run; although it’s thrashed just as much as Stairway in the US, I never hear it here.

This might be too random for radio- but that’s the context it came up in with the 2CH thread…

Do non-premium short SMS lines exist in Australia? There’s references I can find to a trial of allowing texts to 13/1300 numbers, but those were in 2007 and I’ve never seen one since. Instead all radio stations with text numbers need to call out a standard 04xx number - with most of them not being particularly memorable.

Would have seemed useful if they could have just been saying ‘call or text 13 1170’ on air, rather than reading off a mobile number.

The lack of use suggests to me that there isn’t any.

It may also be too confusing to the public, who probably think every mobile number HAS to start with 04 (though 05 mobile numbers are starting to be issued now too).

Commercial Radio Australia is aiming to transform the way audio advertising is bought and sold with the roll out the briefings module of RadioMATRIX in two weeks time.

RadioMATRIX allows media buyers to connect with every commercial station on one powerful platform.

Really? For all carriers?

I don’t know of any mobile number that doesn’t start with 04 ianywhere n Australia.

05 numbers were initially assigned for dual mobile/landline services. IIRC it was a number that roamed between a mobile device, if it was within coverage, and a landline. The take up of the service was very minimal and I don’t even think it was continued.

With the 04 numbers filling up I wouldn’t be surprised if 05 was now being reserved for future mobile use.

That’s what I thought the plan is/was.

I’m in a bad mood today. Help me cheer me up with this band.

Do you know this band?

It’s Aneiki! How is it forgotten?

With the 2002 hit “Pleased To Meet You”?

Probably forgotten because I think that was their only hit.

Good song though.

It actually came out in 2001. It peaked at #26 on the ARIA charts.

Yep - though I assume when people start getting 05 numbers it’ll break a bunch of services that assume the only valid mobile number to enter starts with 04.

Might make sense to start allocating them to data sims before having widespread use of them for standard phones. As that’s mainly where I think you will see major number growth from now.

I wonder if we will see the ‘gold rush’ kind of thing for 05 numbers before they go to general carrier applications - as an opportunity for companies - like radio stations, to try and drag this on topic a bit - to get the phone names. Like an ‘0505 SEN SEN’ text number, vs their current complex 0433 98 1116.

Indeed. A lot of PABXs etc will be programmed to allow 04 numbers but restrict 05. They’ll need to be reprogrammed to allow 05.

Back in the late 90s, only a couple of blocks of 1300 numbers were released and were already well utilised, when Telstra advertised that they were about to release the 1300 13x xxx block of numbers, on behalf of my then employer I was able to pounce on a couple of good ‘double’ combos. Our account rep at Telstra said at the time that our application might be rejected as they may prefer to reserve ‘premium’ number combos for higher value ($$$) clients. But they ended up approving it. Possibly because I just happened to get in early.

Getting back to Aneiki, their only other very minor hit was ‘Superhero’. ‘Pleased To Meet You’ was thrashed for a very short time in about September 2001, then promptly discarded. It’s one of the better songs from that era, from which there are few highlights.

I watched the ohnoitsnathan Top 50 2001 compilation from Rage tonight and boy there was some garbage. Amazingly I just caught KIIS 106.5 playing Westlife’s version of ‘Uptown Girl’ which is a prime example of said garbage. Perhaps they knew I was checking the tropo at that moment.

You’re right. That is ACMA’s plan.

When the numbering plan was issued, they predicted we would have needed them by now.

WIN only owns two radio stations, i98 & C91.3, but they have a big regional TV network that is affiliated with 10, with some Seven & Nine affiliate stations in Griffith & SA.

That being said, according to a Radioinfo article from last year, its radio stations make more money than its TV stations. Not sure if that’s still the case now since COVID, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it is, if not even more so. Of course, the fact that i98 continues to dominate the Wollongong radio market in the ratings helps, even though its parent company WIN is now generally 3rd in the local TV ratings.

With the Northconnex tunnel opening up on Saturday 31st October. I assume all the major Sydney Commercial Fm / AM, ABC, and SBS stations, and some, or possibly all of the Sydney wide community fm stations will be piped through the tunnel.

I wonder if there will be anything out of the ordinary like Dab+ repeaters or Central Coast commercials fm stations to cater for the Central Coast commuters. The Lane Cove tunnel rebroadcasts 2NSB 99.3 which is a bit unusual considering it is a small sub suburban community station, but in the licence area of the Lane Cove Tunnel.

I imagine it will be just the major FMs

Given the debacle about the mine repeater in Queensland, I can’t see any out-of-area retransmissions being licenced for the time being.
