While Sky NZ has yet to make an official announcement, the departure of several key Paramount-owned channels (including MTV, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network) appears imminent after 1 November 2025. This move aligns with a broader industry trend of content providers shifting focus to their own streaming platforms and Sky’s strategy of curating more localised and owned channel brands.

Even though this is hypothetical, here is a line-up of how the replacement channels (and their mock designs) look like.

Sky Music could emerge as Sky’s flagship music channel, catering for a broad contemporary audience. Its programming would likely feature:

  • Chart hits and premieres: A constant rotation of the latest music videos from international and local artists, with a strong emphasis on what’s currently trending in New Zealand.
  • Artist interviews and specials: Exclusive interviews, live performances and documentaries focusing on popular musicians.
  • Interactive content: Integration with social media to feature viewer requests and trending topics, creating a more engaging experience.
  • Genre-specific blocks: Apart from the hottest chart hits and premieres, there are slots dedicated to hip hop, RnB, rock, heavy metal and dance/EDM.

Sky Retro would tap into the powerful force of nostalgia, offering a curated journey through the music of past decades.

  • Decade-specific slots: Dedicated slots for the 80s, 90s and 2000s, featuring iconic music videos and artist retrospectives.
  • Themed countdowns: “Top 100 Hits of the 90s” or “Best of 80s Rock” style countdowns, providing a structured and engaging viewing experience.

Recognising the need for dedicated children’s programming, Sky would likely split its offering by age group.

Sky Kids would cater for the preschool demographic with a focus on educational and entertaining content.

  • Safe and educational content: A line-up of shows designed to aid in early childhood development, focusing on numbers, letters and social skills.
  • Local productions: An opportunity to showcase and develop New Zealand-made content for preschoolers, featuring local stories and characters.
  • Ad-free environment: To appeal to parents, this channel is fully presented with no commercial advertising.

Sky Quest would be aimed at the 6-12 year old demographic, offering a mix of adventure, animation and educational content.

  • Animated series: A blend of popular international animated shows and locally produced content.
  • Live-action adventures: Programmes that encourage curiosity and exploration, potentially including science, nature and history-focused shows.
  • After-school blocks: Structured afternoon schedules to capture the after-school audience with a mix of comedy, action and educational content.

Sky Laughs would aim to be the new home of comedy, moving beyond the repetitive sitcoms of the past.

  • Stand-up comedy specials: Featuring international and a strong contingent of New Zealand comedians.
  • Local comedy productions: A platform for new and existing New Zealand comedy series and panel shows.
  • Curated comedy films: A selection of classic and contemporary comedy movies.

Sky True would tap into the ever-popular reality television genre, with a potential focus on compelling, real-life stories.

  • Documentary series: In-depth documentary series exploring a range of topics, from true crime to human interest stories.
  • Reality programming: A mix of observational documentaries and popular reality formats, with a potential for locally produced versions of successful international franchises.
  • Factual entertainment: Shows that blend entertainment with factual content, such as popular science and history programmes.

This hypothetical channel overhaul would represent a strategic shift for Sky NZ, moving from a reliance on international ‘pass-through’ channels to a more curated and owned-brand approach. This would not only allow for more control over content and scheduling but also open up new opportunities for local productions and a stronger connection with New Zealand audiences.

While the final line-up remains to be seen, the departure of the Paramount channels undoubtedly paves the way for a new era in New Zealand’s pay-television landscape.

What do you think of that?

How do you do those Sky logo mocks? Do you have the actual corporate logotype?

He probably used whatthefont.com to find the closest font. It looks good!

@greenpea @sj2450 Actually, I used Whisk - an experimental AI-powered image generator from Google Labs which allows users like me to create images (including logo mocks) by making use of visual prompts rather than text.

Users can upload images for the subject, scene and style to blend them into a new image which is designed for rapid visual exploration and brainstorming. By making use of Whisk, below is an example of the mock Sky News logo if Sky NZ were to launch a 24-hour news and information channel (no connection to its British and Australian counterparts).

The tool uses Google’s Gemini and Imagen 3 models to interpret the image and generate a new visual based on their essence.

This could be reality soon, with Seven acquiring SCA.

I agree it’s a brilliant mock, but I’m not so sure given Hit and Triple M are already strong brands. Which one would you rebrand as “Seven Radio” and what would the other one be called?

I’d pick Hit to become 7 Radio, and Triple M remains.

How about 7LiSTNR? Just saying.

nah let’s just keep Hit

while Hit isn’t the best brand name, I just don’t think 7 Radio/7 LiSTNR is the best replacement.

Agreed. If anything, 7 Radio should be the legal name like Nine did.

Each state has a subheading, but is also repeated after every town/city name again?

Had a go at making the Fox Cricket stuff closer to their AFL layout

I didn’t go grab the right fonts so forgive just stretching some vaguely close stuff.

If it helps, Fox Footy uses Joyride Ext (written in lowercase) for team names and Maison Neue Ext for the rest.

Nothing to see here

Does it really matter? I did what I could to assemble this one quite well.

Surprised to see that this mock I made 3 weeks ago depicting a 7SCA ad break (an embedded IA upload) has blown up to nearly 600 views.[1]

Looks like 7SCA really is gaining traction after all.

  1. Also I uploaded this as a test item, so it’ll disappear soon. It’s still on Odysee after that. ↩︎
