The only stinker they’ve played is the Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band. I turned off around when Cheech and Chong came on- not my cup of tea, and a lot of live stuff seemingly after that.

All in all though, a great day of listening and it’s not likely to be repeated ever.

A shame most people only know this band for “Sweet Home Alabama.” They have a really excellent discography.

Besides, that is an excellent playlist. If only the ABC had a place to put a bit more lesser known classic rock out there permanently instead of that irrelevant to most audiences Classic FM.

Not to mention that today would have been a perfect opportunity to convert regional Classic FM services to Double J.

It’s a pity the ABC chose classical music for its first FM network in 1975 instead of rock, could you just imagine Double J in FM stereo in all capital cities back then! I think the reason was that to protect the existing commercial AM stations’ ratings.

Probably more that the ABC charter has been to provide a point of difference to commercial broadcasters, not so much to protect them.

Gee I wish ABC could run a permanent stream of the early years of Double J online and/or DAB.

Time to break out the Go West.

Wishful thinking aside, it would be interesting to know how much material is down in the dusty dungeons of the ABC archives. How much of it is being digitised before it’s lost for good?

Good log!

So many candidates for the Environmental songs too, if you were prepared to bend it a little.

Yes indeed. I didn’t want to play the obvious one- ‘Big Yellow Taxi’- as The Conga Line eschews cliche.

One of my favourite WSFM Gold 101.7 FM tracks!!

Mine too, though they never played that very often, only occasionally.

I stand corrected wsfm didn’t play it once in the month of Jan. Forever Classic GNFM played it 10 times. 2EC played it twice in Jan.

This is according to Lava. Nothing on Triple M Sydney either, 2UE none either so far. So Sydney commercial stations have not played it. Edit or smooth either

So it isn’t a WSFM classic its a Forever Classic Classic, I take back my first post

#2 on Hauraki’s Countdown.

Dave Dobbyn’s piss-take at Australia’s drinking culture. Probably more at home on Jan 26 than Waitangi Day.

Indeed. Mentions the Coogee Bay Hotel (he sings Cooh-gee not Could-gee) and also Kings Cross. But it is the definition of a Kiwi classic.

Was reading up about Dave Dobbyns career. No hits with Th’Dudes or DD Smash in Australia; only ‘Slice Of Heaven’ brought major success and that was due to Footrot Flats. He had a couple of other very minor hits following Slice Of Heaven but that was it in the West Island.

I thought ‘Whaling’ and ‘Magic (What She Do)’ were minor hits over here, I remember hearing/reading about them at the time.

You’re right- yes for ‘Whaling’ but apparently not for ‘Magic’, at least if this is correct:

Though Magic may have got some airplay- I’ve played it before and it also airs on Paul’s Powerzone.

As for Th’Dudes, they basically got tired of the hard graft required to make it in Australia; it didn’t help that they were up against the likes of AC/DC, The Angels, Australian Crawl et. al for pub rock supremacy.
