Agree. It’s odd considering that bands like that were such a staple of commercial FM during the 90s.
Unfortunately so. Many commercial FM stations in the 90’s had too tight a playlist and didn’t play all the current chart hits.
Given my recent comment in the latest metro radio ratings thread, I thought I’d analyse a typical hour of the Perth commercial music radio stations.
All of these took place at 1-2pm AWST on Monday 7th November 2022.

6IX has the best log followed by 96fm IMO.
Triple M is not bad.
For me, I would pick the Triple M log.
Not loving that 6iX log.
Eagle Rock, Born in the USA, December 1963. Could there be any more flogged classic hits? They need to broaden and maybe soften a bit to differentiate themselves.
I can see why they don’t rate as well as 4BH or Cruise.
I like the Triple M and even the Mix log.
What’s interesting to note is that 6iX carries the same log (with maybe 1 song being substituted for another) as that of its sister station 2CA in Canberra, which also doesn’t rate highly for an AM music station where there’s only two commercial FM stations.
Let’s find out.

Another good comparison is the recent Oztober 300 countdown.
2MMM and 3MMM ran a separate countdown to the rest of the network with more rock skewing songs. Icehouse’s “Great Southern Land” was number one.
I believe the regionals and maybe 4MMM and 5MMM took the other countdown that had John Farnham’s “You’re The Voice” as number one.
In this list below I’ve omitted the songs that were common across both countdowns.

Quite amazing this song still gets a lot of airplay given 1) it is over twelve months old and 2) it didn’t even chart in the ARIA top 50 (highest peak #100). Still love it personally though!
All three Triple M logs are terrible! So mediocre. I’d rather listen to Rebel or Breeze or my iPod.
A couple of station changers but Triple M seems reasonably listenable over there. That or 96fm for me. But given the options, I can see how anyone under 30 would end up on Nova - the other stations have literally vacated the field for those who prefer music from this millennium.
Here’s a bit of a blast from the past, going back to just a little over 10 years ago.
The following playlists were done when I was over in Perth back in October 2012. In that time, 96fm was owned by Fairfax, the only metro commercial FM station owned by them, which meant that the station was almost practically an independently-owned station. It was one of the best rock stations in Australia IMHO, not far behind that of Rebel. Meanwhile, 6iX, and indeed pretty much every other “Forever Classic” stations, was a lot more adventurous than what it is now.
Anyway, here it is below.
96fm - Perth, WA
“Keep Real Music Alive”
Monday 22nd October 2012 - 11am-12pm AWST
“Blister In The Sun” Violent Femmes
“Madness” Muse
“Green Limousine” The Badloves
“Borders” Feeder
“Changes (Live)” David Bowie
“New York” Eskimo Joe
“Who Made Who” AC/DC
“Pumped Up Kicks” Foster The People
“I’ll Stand By You” The Pretenders
“Don’t You (Forget About Me)” Simple Minds
“Little Talks” Of Monsters & Men
6iX - Perth, WA
“Forever Classic”
Monday 22nd October 2012 - 11am-12pm AWST
“I Was Made For Lovin’ You” Kiss
“You Can Leave Your Hat On” Joe Cocker
“Doctor My Eyes” Jackson Browne
“Downtown” Petula Clark
“Rhiannon” Fleetwood Mac
“Spooky” Classics IV
“Lean On Me” Bill Withers
“I Love A Rainy Night” Eddie Rabbitt
“Marrakesh Express” Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
“Listen To The Music” The Doobie Brothers
“Too Late For Goodbyes” Julian Lennon
“Girls On The Avenue” Richard Clapton
“My Guy” Mary Wells
“I Hear You Knockin’” Dave Edmunds
Would 96FM’s current playlist really differ from that today?
Another NYE, and another whip around the world. Got a question from this first log from across the ditch, how many of these songs would get onto a MMM Playlist?

No fanfare to bring in the new year. HAPPY NEW YEAR NEW ZEALAND. First song of 2023 on the station was Distrubed - Down With The Sickness
Poor form. I just played the quintessential Kiwi drinking song to ring in the NZ new year: ‘Bliss’ by Th’Dudes.
Not bad, but I’d rather listen to MMM 2000s or MMM 80s.
Down to Tassie for the East Coast EDST time zone, no this isn’t sympathy for a lack of suitable footy ground…
